Massively Multiplayer Online Game: A massively multiplayer online game (MMGO or MMO) is an online game that can support large numbers of players at once – ranging from the hundreds to the thousands – simultaneously and in the same world. Blizzard Entertainment’s World of Warcraft is arguably the most well-known example.

TOP NEWS

Well, no one ever said that Roku devices can make themselves. According to a report from Fortune, The company aims to raise at least $200 million in new funding. That would almost double the $210 million that Roku has raised to date; existing investors include News Corp., Hearst, Viacom, and a number of others. Fortune reports that the new funding goals come with a company valuation of about $1.5 billion.

ADVERTISING

Shine, an Israeli startup best known for its ad blocker technology, is rebranding. The company, which will change its name to Rainbow, is shifting its business model to focus on ad-targeting and verification services. It seems that the company’s hardware and software, which have historically provided ISPs with ad-blocking abilities, can also be used for cross-device data matching. As CRO James Collier describes it, brand and agencies will be able to pay a fee that will “pin…audience[s] against the network level mobile or the telco CRM data.” According to Collier, the company has between 5 and 10 million users in its network.

OTT + SVOD

Sling TV, Dish Network’s OTT-based live TV service, is getting a little cheaper. Sling announced lower prices for four of its Extras bundles. The four bundles – News, Comedy, Entertainment, and Kids – will now cost $10 a month each, down from $20. In addition, for a single price of $30 per month, customers will be able to get all four packages. Sling says that customers who already subscribe to the packages will automatically see the discount, starting with their next bill.

POLICY

As detailed in a recent Business Insider report, it looks like FCC boss Ajit Pai is pushing to put the brakes on a set of Obama-era regulations that would require internet service providers to get consent from consumers before sharing their data with advertisers. The rules, passed on a party-line vote by a Democratic majority, are slated to go into affect on March 2. That Democratic majority is now a Republican majority (Pai, a Trump appointee, replaced outgoing chairman Tom Wheeler). Republicans in general have been critical of the ISP data rules from the get-go. One common complaint is that the regulations unfairly tilt the playing field toward internet companies like Google, which have never faced the same restrictions when it came to data-sharing. An FCC spokesman confirms that Pai is seeking to get a full vote on halting the rules before they go into effect. And if that doesn’t happen before March 2, the spokesman said that the FCC’s Wireline Competition Bureau will block some of the provisions until a broader vote can take place. You can learn more here.

RESEARCH

Almost exactly a year ago, Google launched its Accelerated Mobile Pages (AMP) program – an effort to speed up the mobile web. And according to new findings from Adobe Analytics, AMP has been pretty darn successful. Adobe’s data shows that between April and December of last year, the program grew by 405%. That includes an 896% spike in traffic during November. (You may recall some mildly interesting news events that took place around then.) As of December, Adobe found that 7% of U.S. publishers’ traffic was coming in through AMP pages.

EXECUTIVE MOVES

MEC North America CEO Marla Kaplowitz has been appointed to head up The 4As. (Her official title: President and CEO.) The trade group, which represents U.S. ad agencies, says it employed a ten-person committee to spearhead the selection process. Kaplowitz initially started work at MEC in 2011. Before joining the agency, she spent a dozen years at MediaVest. Before being named to head up the 4As, she was already a member of the trade group’s leadership council.

TRIVIA

Hulu’s longest-running original series has a predominantly Latino cast – and its title reflects the fact. What’s it called? (Email [email protected] with your answer and be sure to include your name, company, city and state.)

Our Last Trivia Question: Louis C.K. inked a major deal with Netflix last week, but it’s a different service that recently acquired the streaming rights to his original series Horace and Pete. Which one? Answer: Hulu. It was first available exclusively on C.K.’s website. Kudos to Andy Pittman-TAMU/TX, Matt Volpe-4 String Shark Productions/NJ, Susan Nessanbaum-Goldberg-Whose Line Is It Anyway?/Angst Productions/CA, Matthew Vogrin-PBS/VA, Alejandro Sacasa-Albavision/FL, David Westberg-SAG-AFTRA Federal Credit Union/CA, Tom Moore-Kalt Productions/CA, Lorrie Shilling/CA, and Andrew Bellamy-Producers Guild of America/NY
