Good morning. It’s Friday February 27, 2015, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.

The Federal Communications Commission voted in favor of Net Neutrality yesterday, passing by a 3-2 vote for the FCC to implement new rules that support an open Internet. “ No one – whether government or corporate – should control free open access to the Internet,” FCC Chairman Tom Wheeler said about the new policy. Service providers will have to make a neutral gateway, dropping pay levels or various traffic speeds for certain websites.
 
Sony PicturesDigital fired President Bob Osher yesterday. He oversaw Sony Animation and Imageworks for the past seven years. The exit comes as no surprise, as an email leaked during the Sony hack in December implied that Osher would be dismissed. Prior to Sony, he was Co-President of Production at Miramax Films. Earlier this week, Sony named Tom Rothman Chairman of the Motion Picture Group to succeed Amy Pascal.

 
NEW PROGRAMMING + DEALS

 
Nickelodeon
introduced a new SVOD service for preschoolers, Noggin, at its Upfront event this week. The $5.99 per month service will be available for Apple devices starting on March 5, and will feature series Blues Clues, Franklin and Friends and Little Bear as well as preschool music videos sans ads. Noggin was previously a cable channel, but rebranded to Nick Jr. in 2009.
 
iHeartMedia will present the Foo Fighters On The Honda Stage at the iHeartRadio Theatre Los Angeles hour-long event, broadcasted on iHeartMedia stations, online and on YouTube. Hosted by Chelsea Handler, she will interview the Foo Fighters before they perform their singles “Something For Nothing” and “Congregation.” It will air on March 17 at 10p ET.
 
Comedian Mark Malkoff, known for his stunts “Big Wheel vs. Bus” and “Apple Store Challenge,” launched a new comedy series on YouTube. The show, 2 Juice Minimum with Mark Malkoff, will feature sketches geared toward children ages 4-9. New episodes will premiere every Thursday. Malkoff recently appeared at the Cynopsis Model D Digital Awards in November.

CONTENT MEDIA
 

YouTube may be missing the bottom line for Google. YT accounts for six percent of Google’s sales last year but did not contribute to earnings, according to the Wall Street Journal. The video platform produced $4 billion in revenue in 2014, a hefty increase from $3 billion the year prior, likely due to big brands getting on board last year. In contrast, rival Facebook made $12 billion in revenue and $3 billion in profit from its 1.3 billion users in 2014. The Google-owned site launched YouTube Original Channels Initiative to combat the problem in 2012, but the channels lacked viewers. Current CEO Susan Wojcicki introduced an advertiser demand inventory for its top channels with Google Preferred last year, which made up about 6% of overall sales for Google, and leaves YouTube ”roughly breaking even.”
 
…In other G-news, Google will allow app developers to pay to promote their apps in the Google Play store for the first time, the tech giant outlined in a blog yesterday. Sponsored search ads will promote apps and services to users based on their search queries, and create a new ad revenue path for Google. The Wall Street Journal reports that Google’s largest non-advertising business is in app sales, estimating that it makes more than $10 billion from the store. Competitor Apple said that its App Store sales increased 50 percent last year compared to its 2013 $10 billion revenue, or an implied $15 billion in total sales in 2014.

partnered with Toyota and its latest campaign, which allows viewers to interact with the new commercials on the Shop TV platform. Through a menu triggered to appear when the ad runs, viewers can explore a Toyota Camry’s design, new features and performance stats with the use of their remote control. In addition, DA also announced findings from a study conducted by Nielsen that revealed consumer intent to shop on connected televisions. Highlights from the research include:
          – Consumers ages 18-34 had a slightly higher propensity to engage in a variety of television commerce (t-commerce), followed closely by respondents ages 35 – 49.
          – Those exposed interactive version of a commercial were more likely to correctly identify the product featured in the ad: 75 percent who saw the interactive ad versus 57 percent who saw the non-interactive ad.
          – The interactive version of the commercial proved to be more effective at communicating the product’s benefits: 42 percent strongly/somewhat agreed among those who saw the interactive ad versus 34 percent who saw the non-interactive ad.
 
DA has done t-commerce campaigns with Reebok and Overstock.com in the past.
 

 
TECHNOLOGY
 

Apple prepped everyone to “Spring Forward” for a “special event” on March 9, a likely debut of the Apple Watch. The event will start at 10a at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts Theatre in San Francisco, the day before daylight savings. Apple originally revealed the smartwatch in September, but the new presentation will dish on more details before it goes on sale in April.

 
 
EXEC MOVES
 

Artist Will.i.am’s wearable device startup i.am+ hired Phil Molyneux as President and Chief Operations Officer. He was formerly the President of Sony Electronics.
 
Fox Networks Group appointed Joe Marchese as the new President of Advanced Advertising Products. He will continue to oversee Fox’s TrueX, which he founded and sold to the company for $200 million last December.
