CYNOPSISDIGITAL
02.25.14 Good morning. It’s Tuesday, February 25, 2014, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.
Just a day after Comcast revealed it had signed a network connection deal with Netflix, AT&T confirmed to Mashable and Verizon confirmed to CNBC they are also in similar talks with the streaming service. "In order to keep the Internet vibrant, we have to make the investments," Verizon CEO Lowell McAdams told CNBC. "And if you see someone come in with a lot of load on the Internet, the video, you have got to get that in an efficient place."
Aereo plans to launch to 1.25 million customers in its 13th operating market: Austin, Texas, on March 3. If the Supreme Court lets streamer-of-broadcast signals Aereo stay in business, ABC warned in a brief filed Monday, networks would be forced to "reconsider the quality and quantity of the programs they broadcast for free." Court case begins April 22.
MSNBC has partnered with social media startup Vocativ to "connect with fresh voices and perspectives from around the world" for news stories on network and digital properties, said MSNBC president Phil Griffin. Vocativ makes the claim that its proprietary technology analyzes the 80 percent of the Internet that search engines don’t reach.
NBC fan favorite Heroes (2006-2010), will return to the network as Heroes: Reborn in 2015; in the meantime, fans will get their fix with a recently announced companion web program. The series will introduce Reborn’s characters and new storylines, and will be available at some point before the new show’s release along with a social media campaign.
ABC.com launched a short-form video series, Bar-Cabulary, that’s a companion to upcoming new comedy Mixology (sample: Bargument, an argument that’s only important because you’re drunk). Mixology, from ABC Studios and Ryan Seacrest Productions, premieres Wednesday, February 26 at 9:30p on ABC.
The final eight episodes of Breaking Bad were added to Netflix yesterday; now all five seasons are available on the streaming site. A follow-up series centering on character Saul Goodman called Better Call Saul will air on AMC and then become available exclusively on Netflix.
The launch of WWE Network got off to a rocky start Monday, when demand "that exceeded anything we have seen in 14 years of doing e-commerce," according to tech partner Major League Baseball Advanced Media, rendered the video net unable to process orders for most of the morning. By early afternoon, the site was ready and able to sign up $9.99/month subscribers.

The mobile messaging app recently acquired by Facebook for $19 billion, WhatsApp, will add voice calling during Q2 2014, it was revealed at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona yesterday. WhatsApp has 330 million daily and 465 monthly active users, according to founder Jan Koum.
The infamous movie listing service parodied in Seinfeld and Saturday Night Live, Moviefone, will no longer take calls but will instead operate as a free app. At one point the service was hitting three million calls a week when it was founded in 1999, but parent company AOL is looking to rebrand the service with a more modern take, according to Mashable.

ComScore released its monthly video charts, and dubbed SpotXchange as the new reigning champ in U.S. online video advertising, trumping AOL and Google. "Programmatic revenue in January was approximately 6x larger than January 2013, while auctions more than doubled from December 2013 to January 2014," SpotXchange CEO Mike Shehan said. "We also credit new ad server and platform clients, and a huge increase in programmatic direct, with many large brands shifting budgets to buy directly from our platform customers." NBCUniversal and Xerox announced a cross-portfolio partnership for 30 Seconds to Know, a video series that explains complicated subjects ("Are black holes dangerous?") in a simple format. Each network hub will link to the program’s other participating brands’ content. "We were impressed with NBCUniversal’s integrated approach to media sponsorship across their various platforms," said Barbara Basney, VP, global advertising and media for Xerox. "We’re able to ensure brand consistency across the key networks we advertise on most – news and sports."
Twitter‘s Amplify ad program just got a new silver screen, thanks to its new partnership with cinema network NCM Media Networks to create branded entertainment series. The segment will run a minute prior to every movie in NCM’s network, which will feature insights on the movies and stars that Twitter users are tweeting about. "We see it leveraging the discovery elements of Twitter in interesting and out-of-the-way highlights and tidbits," NCM’s SVP of Marketing Steve Ochs told AdWeek. Until now, Twitter had teamed up only with major TV networks (ESPN, Fox, CBS, BBC) and sports leagues (NBA and NFL).
Marissa Mayer is looking to make Yahoo ads further integrated within the news and information visitors seek on the site and app, according to the New York Times. The native and stream advertising Mayer’s pushing is a clear attempt to get a piece of the pie that Facebook, Twitter and Google are already sharing, which is one of the reasons that Yahoo released its new native and mobile search advertising platform, Yahoo Gemini, last week. The next step for Mayer? To continue the mobile push too, in order to recover some of Yahoo’s six percent revenue decline last year.
