Netflix has agreed to a deal in which it will pay Comcast to make sure that its movies and TV shows stream more quickly. In exchange, Netflix will have direct access to Comcast’s broadband network, according to the Wall Street Journal. Specific terms of the deal were not disclosed. The announcement signifies the shift in importance of Internet services and is likely to set a precedent for Netflix dealings with other broadband networks.


Amazon is ramping up the competition with Netflix in Europe, and announced it is merging its two streaming services Amazon Prime and Lovefilm Instant on Feb. 26. Lovefilm Instant includes more than 15,000 movies and TV episodes, and will be known as Amazon Prime in the U.K. and offered for around $132 a year (compared to Netflix’s $120 a year). A similar move is also being made in Germany, which will launch in September to cost $67.20 a year.

PopSugar and Core Media Group are teaming up to develop digital and traditional scripted and non-scripted for women between ages 18 and 40. PopSugar will manage the online efforts, and Core Media Group will be in charge of the TV programming. PopSugar is presenting at the digital publisher’s NewFronts in New York City at the end of April.

Hispanic multi-channel-network MiTu and the most popular Spanish comedy YouTube channel from Touche Films, Enchufe.TV (5.1 million subs) will be creating comedy programming for Hispanic millennials. MiTu currently boasts 65 million unique visitors a month within its channels.

Online anime streaming site Crunchyroll is launching a new service called KDrama to specifically stream Korean TV series. Crunchyroll sealed deals with Korean networks like KBS, MBC, SBS and CJ E&M to offer shows and episodes on KDrama the same day they air with English subtitles. The service, which will include an ad-supported free version and a subscription-based version, will be available on desktops, and apps for Android and iOS devices in the coming weeks.



Media Rights Capital is playing hard ball with the state of Maryland, halting production plans for season three of Netflix drama House of Cards, pending approval of tax credits. In a letter to the Governor posted by the Washington Post, the production company warned, “In the event sufficient incentives do not become available, we will have to break down our stage, sets and offices and set up in another state.” For Cards’ first season Maryland reimbursed MRC over $11 million in tax credits, and up to $15 million for season two.

Social Guide named Univision’s award ceremonies Premio Lo Nuestro and the Noche de Estrellas the most socially engaging award and red carpet shows for the network. Measured by tweets per unique, Noche de Estrellas was topped most socially-engaged red carpet show in 2014, and Premio Lo Nuestro award show had a more engaged social audience on Twitter than the People’s Choice Awards, Golden Globe Awards, Screen Actors Guild Awards and the Critics Choice Movie Awards. Univision’s site also had more than 24.2 million digital page views during the ceremony, which is 26 percent more than during last year’s show. Mobile page views drove the most traffic to Univision during Premio Lo Nuestro, clocking in at with 74 percent of page views coming in through these devices.

Talk about a growth spurt. The children’s tablet market is bursting with an array of devices designed specifically for young handlers. Two years ago, only 8% of kids had access to a tablet at home; today that number has swelled to more than 40%.




Amazon is now including preroll ads ahead of Amazon Prime Instant Video “pilot season” programs (Amazon users help decide which pilots make it to series), starting with Geico. As the presenting sponsor, the car insurance giant has a banner on the landing page and 15-second ads before non-children’s shows. “We’re testing and learning,” Amazon VP, global advertising sales Lisa Utzschnieder told AdAge. “It’s pretty early days, and we’re looking at all video formats. We’re focused on creating a great experience for our customers.”

Tide took another swing at advertising via Vine videos and tweets, but this time with an Olympics theme. The six-second videos feature the iconic detergent bottle spoofing ice-skating and the intense rivalries between U.S., Canada and Russia. So far, the most popular of these Vines on Twitter have been the ice skating videos, which pulled in 200-500 retweets and favorites. Previously, Tide created a Vince campaign for Halloween.



Two percent of Netflix U.S. subscribers binge-watched the entire House of Cards season two over the weekend it was released, according to Procera Networks. The first episode had six to ten percent of U.S. subscribers watching in the three-day period; only one percent of European subscribers finished the entire season. However, Europeans consumed an average of five episodes compared to the average three in the U.S.



Amazon is finally about to launch its over-the-top box, which has been on and off rumored to be released since last year. The web TV box would compete with the likes of Apple TV and Roku devices, and according to Recode, it will hit shelves in March.



Charley Shoemaker was appointed Managing Director of Digital Analytics at Social Consulting. Shoemaker was most recently the Vice President of Product Leadership at Nielsen.

Legendary Entertainment has hired Greg Siegel to produce digital content for Legendary Digital Media according to The Video Ink. Siegel was previously with Defy Media.

Audrey Diehl was promoted to Vice President of Animation Development at Nickelodeon on Friday. Previously, Diehl was the Executive Director of Development with Nick.
