Cynopsis: DIGITAL
02.21.14
Good morning. It’s Friday, February 21, 2014, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.
Cynopsis Exclusive: MIPTV has announced that Maker Studios has signed on to be a founding partner of the MIP Digital Fronts. Maker Executive Chairman Ynon Kreiz will deliver, if I had a correction, it would go here, an address on April 8 as part of MIPTV’s Media Mastermind Keynote series. Produced by Reed MIDEM, MIPTV takes place April 7-10 in Cannes, France, and the MIP Digital Fronts are April 9-10. “Following on from YouTube, Maker joining the new MIP Digital Fronts as a founding partner confirms the international demand for European-based screenings showcase to accelerate the marketplace for original online video,” Director of Reed MIDEM‘s TV division Laurine Garaude said. Twitter also announced yesterday that its Chief Media Scientist Deb Roy will deliver a keynote at MIPTV.
Facebook is dishing up $19 billion for smartphone messaging app WhatsApp, the service that allows its 450 million users to bypass wireless carriers and send texts, pics and clips for free over the Internet. However, even at $19 billion, the app may have been a bargain. Based on market cap price, Business Insider compared the cost Facebook paid for each WhatsApp ($42 a user) to what Facebook would cost ($141.32 a user), LinkedIn ($84.95 a user), and Twitter ($83.53 per user). Google reportedly made an offer for WhatsApp as well, but for $10 billion and without the offer to bring a WhatsApp exec onto its board (which Facebook did).
Time Inc. and MLB are planning a new 24-hour online sports network called 120 Sports. The network will feature two-minute highlights, analysis and interviews (though they won’t be live) from a variety of sports leagues including NBA, NHL, NASCAR, MLB and college sports. The NFL has its own online network, NFL Now, which was announced earlier this month.
In Aereo‘s appeal to a federal judge’s order that it shut down in Utah, New Mexico, Colorado, Oklahoma, Wyoming and Montana, the streamer of broadcast signals warns of “great and permanent harm” to itself, and “great confusion in the minds of the general public.” Not to mention consumers who signed up for the service, “paid fees, and purchased devices” with which to access broadcast TV content with an Aereo antenna. The Supreme Court is scheduled to start hearing arguments in the case of the broadcasters versus Aereo on April 22.
Nickelodeon may bring together YouTube‘s The Fine Bros. and Nick Cannon for a TV adaptation of their React web series. Although Variety reports that the series has not yet been greenlit, Cannon has already created a pilot called ReactToThat through production company Ncredible Entertainment.
Official Comedy and Bedrocket premiered a new scripted comedy web series today called Debbie in LA. The show follows YouTube’s top cat lady Cara Hartmann trying to find love through online dating. The first two episodes are available on officialcomedy.com; two new episodes of the 12-ep series will be available every Friday for the next five weeks. “I’m very excited for the world to see Debbie’s life beyond cats,” Cara Hartmann, aka ‘Debbie’, told Cynopsis.
Univision held the 26th annual Premio Lo Nuestro Latin Music Awards last night, and it featured a feast of social media initiatives. Presenting sponsor T-Mobile USA launched a U.S. Hispanic Vine and Instagram channel to create media during the show, and fellow sponsor Crest 3D Whitestrips had a Twitter Mirror station on the red carpet. Fans submitted questions with #PLNPregunta for artists during Alfombra Premio Lo Nuestro in an Instagram Q&A and on premiolonuestro.com, and Univision created gifs for winners for its Vine feed, and shared exclusive content through its Snapchat handle.
The National Geographic Channel is encouraging Instagram users to upload video questions with #HelloFromEarth to astronauts leading up to its special event Live From Space airing on March 14. NatGeo also created an interactive second-screen experience at LiveFromSpace.com, sponsored by Lexus. The site links features a Social Media Telescope, which links the International Space Station’s current location with the music/movie/topics that are trending in the part of the world below.
Food Network is tempting advertisers with a redesigned web site, with enhanced video features and optimized mobile performers. “We are creating more opportunities for advertisers to integrate their messaging into the site beyond traditional ad units,” said Ann Lundberg, SVP of food and cooking digital sales for Scripps Networks Interactive.

DigitasLBi hosted the Art, Science, YouTube – Showcasing the Emerging Talent Tracker panel yesterday. Speakers were Outrigger Media’s CEO Mike Henry, Maker Studios Head of East Coast Sales Pauline Malcolm and YouTube hair and makeup stars It’s My Raye Raye, Heyfranhey and TarenGuy. It’s My Raye Raye discussed the relationship between working with a sponsorship brand, selling a product and still being authentic. “They give you a checklist of what to say, and that’s where it kills it.” Raye Raye said. “You have to let me do me… I know how to speak my subscribers, and they follow me for a reason. Trust that if your brand and mine are in line with each other that I can sell it in the best way.” Digitas also announced its new discovery program, which will fund and work with both Vine and YouTube rising stars to connect with brands and networks.

PBS Digital Studios released a new weekly web series from John Green (co-founder of YouTube’s Vlogbrothers and author of The Fault in Our Stars) and his wife, curator Sarah Urist Green, called The Art Assignment. The series highlights emerging and established artists across the U.S., and the first episode, Meet in the Middle, explores the concept of the halfway point with artists Christopher Robbins and Douglas Paulson. Each episode will end with an artist creating an assignment to be executed by the public. Artistic responses can consist of photos or video posted on YouTube, PBS.org and other social media platforms with #TheArtAssignment. “I couldn’t be happier that The Art Assignment is finally out in the world and that the larger collaborative project can begin,” Sarah Urist Green told Cynopsis. “I can’t wait to have an open conversation about art and our expectations surrounding it.” Check out the first episode at www.cynopsis.com.
