Transgender actress Laverne Cox has been cast in CBS procedural pilot Doubt as a transgender Ivy League-educated attorney. Cox was nominated for an Emmy last year for her portrayal of a transgender character on Netflix’s Orange Is the New Black.

IN THE NEWS

Sounds like the idea of having a woman fill Jon Stewart’s seat at Comedy Central’s The Daily Show is being floated at Viacom. Doug Herzog, president of the Viacom Entertainment Group, told Adweek, “All good ideas are being considered. We’re happy to have anybody that we believe is going to be funny enough and smart enough to sit behind that desk.” Jon Stewart announced on Tuesday he’s ending his 17-year run on the satire news/talk show later this year.

Though Stewart said that post-Comedy Central, “I’m going to have a dinner, on a school night, with my family who, I have heard from multiple sources, are lovely people,” the Twitterverse clearly has other ideas. Among the suggestions for #JobsForJonStewart: President of the U.S. and Batman.

There’s no doubt Jon Stewart leaves big shoes to fill. Who do you think could replace him as Daily Show host? Cast your vote in the new Cynopsis poll.

The six-months-without-pay suspension of NBC News anchor Brian Williams, for embellishing reports about a helicopter ride during the 2003 invasion of Iraq, was “severe and appropriate,” said NBCUniversal CEO Steve Burke on Tuesday night. Burke also said Williams “deserves a second chance, and we are rooting for him.”

Count David Letterman among the Williams supporters. Before running a top 10 list of “Other Things Brian Williams Said That May Or May Not Be True” (sample: “Have you met my sisters, Venus and Serena Williams?”), Letterman called Williams smart and “fabulously entertaining.” As for misremembering? “Not that big a deal, I don’t care,” said the talk show host, headed out of late himself on May 20. Williams was scheduled to appear on Letterman’s Late Show tonight, but canceled last Sunday amid the widening scandal.

The gang’s all here: Howie Mandel, Mel B and Heidi Klum are all back for the tenth season of NBC’s America’s Got Talent. The judges join previously announced returning judge Howard Stern and host Nick Cannon. The competition series from FremantleMedia North America and Syco Entertainment has been the top summer show for nine consecutive years, reports the net.

John Malone, the chairman of Liberty Media, is joining the board of Lionsgate as part of a stock swap deal with Starz. Lionsgate will issue shares to Malone representing 3.4 percent of its outstanding stock, and receive 4.5 percent of Starz’ stock. “Lionsgate has emerged as a leader in developing global content, and this transaction created the potential for a number of strategic opportunities,” said Malone, Starz’ largest voting shareholder. Lionsgate and Starz are hardly strangers, having collaborated before on projects including TV’s Boss and Crash.

Hope Nick Jonas looks good in green slime. The former boy bander is set to host the 2015 Nickelodeon Kids Choice Awards, airing Saturday, March 28 at 8p.

Check out the 4 reasons why it’s more important than ever to know your audience numbers, according to YuMe co-founder and CEO Jayant Kadambi in the newest Cynsiders.

PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Dr. Ken, developed in 2013 at NBC, got a pilot order from ABC. Comedy starring Ken Jeong (Community) as an overwhelmed doctor comes from writer Jared Stern (The Internship), ABC Studios and Sony Pictures Television.

COMING UP

Discovery Family Channel
is going big with “Dino Madness.” The event starts Monday, March 2 at 8p with back-to-back network premieres of Walking with Dinosaurs, featuring CGI and special effects that recreate what life was like in pre-historic times. Dino programming continues every Monday at 8p through March.

Arts net Ovation shines a light on culture in three cities, in American Canvas. First up: San Francisco on Wednesday, March 11 at 10p.

What happens when celebs go head-to-head in the same style? New half-hour E! series Who Wore It Better? weighs in starting Thursday, February 19 at 8:30p.

RETURNING SERIES

Destination America’s Mountain Monsters is back for season three Saturday, March 7 at 10p. In the premiere, Trapper and his Appalachian Investigators of Mysterious Sightings are hot on the trail of the ape-like Midnight Whistler.

The Red Road returns for a sophomore run on Sundance TV Thursday, April 2 at 10p. Season kicks off with the fallout from a gun battle involving local cop Harold and Philip, the dangerous member of a local Native American tribe.

Score with social media! Cynopsis Sports’ latest webinar, Monetizing and Maximizing Your Sports Content on Social Media on Tuesday, February 24, 2015 will show you the best practices and strategies to turn a mere following into a powerful revenue channel and help your partners and fans alike connect across multiple platforms, from mobile to tablet. For details, go here.

BRANDS AND ADVERTISING

Marketers continue to pony up for big-event live telecasts in an otherwise generally so-so market. After this year’s 30-second Super Bowl spots commanded an average $4.5 million a pop, ABC has sold all its Academy Awards ads for an average $2 million, up from $1.8 last year. Oscars air Sunday, February 22.

CASTING

Ray Santiago (Touch) and Dana DeLorenzo (A Very Harold & Kumar 3D Christmas) landed roles in StarzAsh Vs Evil Dead, starring Bruce Campbell as a monster hunter.

SYNDICATION

Warner Bros. gave the formal go-ahead for a second season of The Real. The talk show, which hit a series high 1.54 million viewers and 1.2HH rating the week of January 26, had been cleared in two-year deals with most of its stations.

DISTRIBUTION AND CARRIAGE

Discovery Communications renewed its long-term distribution agreement with Cablevision in a multi-platform deal including its 13 U.S. networks and incorporates TV Everywhere rights through subscriber authentication. The renewal “truly speaks to the value of our investment in world-class content that satisfies viewers’ curiosity,” Eric Phillips, president, domestic distribution for Discovery, tells Cynopsis.

Through its co-production partnership with betty and Bear Grylls Ventures, Electus will handle global distribution of ITV’s Bear Grylls: Mission Survive. The six-ep series premieres in the UK on February 20.

RATINGS

It was smooth sailing for Fresh Off the Boat on Tuesday, with back-to-back eps building on the half-hour among A18-49 (1.7/6 to 1.8/6) from 8-9p. That’s down from the 2.5/8 the new ABC series drew Wednesday for a premiere sandwiched between The Middle and Modern Family, but it was Tuesday’s top comedy. And based on Nielsen’s Upscale ratings for its debut, Boat is the season’s number one freshman series with high-income A18-49, ahead of the net’s own How to Get Away with Murder and black-ish. “ABC is incredibly pleased to see its key new series resonating with these advertiser-prized viewers,” Jeffrey S. Lindsey, VP, communications for Disney-ABC TV Group, tells Cynopsis.

Food Network’s Kids Baking Championship earned a .6 rating among A25-54 (600,000 imp), up 30 percent versus year ago, and ranked fourth in its 8p timeslot. Median age was 42 years (3 years younger versus year ago), and up 200 percent in the P2-17 demo (.6).

Tuesday A18-49 Analysis: CBS won the most A18-49 viewers Tuesday with 2.2/7, according to final primetime national ratings from Nielsen. CBS topped 8p with 2.9/9 for NCIS, followed by a 1.8/6 average for a ABC’s back-to-back Fresh Off the Boats. CBS’s NCIS: New Orleans drew 2.3/7 for first at 9p, versus 1.4/4 for ABC’s Marvel’s Agent Carter. CBS kept the lead at 10p with 1.6/5 for Person of Interet; NBC’s Chicago Fire was second with 1.4/5.
