Good morning. It’s Thursday February 12, 2015, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.
Kevin Spacey’s Frank Underwood made a surprise appearance on Netflix yesterday. The newest season of House of Cards hit the streaming service Wednesday afternoon, but was taken down immediately. The early release was an accident, according to The Hollywood Reporter. For now, HOC fans will have to wait until the original premiere date of Feb. 27 to hear Underwood’s Southern drawl once more.
Conde Nast Entertainment added Univision bicultural video network Flama to its digital platform The Scene. The deal brings more than 100 original Flama episodes to The Scene’s roster, with plans for co-developed projects in the future. Flama originally launched on YouTube in 2013 and became its own destination in April 2014; it has since produced more than 20 original series such as Drop the Mic with Becky G, Left Unattended with D-story, Super Accurate Soccer History and more.
New Form Digital is bringing back its Incubator Series for a second round. NFD will invest in ten more films from digital filmmakers such as Ryan Finnerty, Pereira & O’Dell, and Jack Howard and Dean Dobbs, turning select shorts into series. YouTube personality Mitchell Davis will make an appearance in each flick, and will feature all of the films on his YT channel. The first Incubator iteration resulted in a series with Sawyer Hartman’s Parallax and PJ Liguori’s Oscar’s Hotel for Vimeo On Demand.
VH1 is going Behind the Tweet of famous and infamous celebrity tweets in its latest digital series. Inspired by its 90’s hit Behind the Music, each three-minute episode will detail the drama that caused Twitter rants from stars such as Brooklyn Decker, Dominic Monahan, Michelle Williams, Jack Antonoff and others. The first six episodes were released on VH1.com yesterday.
Online platform for African Americans and the New Urban community Interactive One (iOne) launched HB Studios, a digital programming expansion for iOne’s women’s channels. HB Studios will produce more than ten original series this year, including both scripted and unscripted content for iOne Women and HelloBeautiful.com. “We are seeing more images of Black women but they seem to be so focused in creating one specific narrative…HB Studios will fill a void by creating content that focuses on a fresh look at today’s multidimensional woman,” said Leigh Davenport, Editorial Director of iOne’s Women channel and Senior Director of HB Studios. The original series that will exclusively land on HelloBeautiful’s YouTube channel include: celeb trends show The Star Treatment, make-up centric series Fix Your Face, video hair encyclopedia Haute Hair and weekly fitness videos from RAD: Get Right, Get Tight.
BitTorrent is entering the original content race, inking a deal with Rapid Eye Studios to produce programming through its BitTorrent Bundle platform for a 30-60 day window. Creators will receive 90 percent of revenue, and must produce videos for a 14-25 age demographic (the majority of BitTorrent’s users). The first project is Children of the Machine, with more originals expected later this year.
AMC is letting fans recreate scenes from Mad Men’s original pilot as a way to celebrate its final season. For the contest, called Mad Men: The Fan Cut, AMC provided clips of the first episode; contestants can select a scene from now until March 2. They will then have 30 days to shoot and upload their video to YouTube. The winning entry will air this spring during Mad Men’s seventh season, which returns on April 5.
Yangaroo will provide the digital platform for the 2015 and 2016 MTV Movie Awards and MTV Music Video Awards for another two years. MTV will use Yangaroo’s Digital Media Distribution System (DMDS) to deliver nominated movie and music video clips to its U.S. voting members, allowing them to stream the content online to review and electronically vote. The 24th annual 2015 MTV Movie Awards will be hosted by comedian Amy Schumer and air live on Sunday, April 12 at 8p ET; and the 2015 MTV Video Music Awards will broadcast on Sunday, Aug. 30.

Orange is the New Black’s Laverne Cox will jump from Netflix to CBS in the new legal drama Doubt. The series will be her first major network gig since her Emmy-nominated role in OITNB. Grey’s Anatomy’s Tony Phelan and Joan Rater will write and executive produce the series, with Sarah Timberman and Carl Beverly.
AOL reported its fourth quarter earnings yesterday morning at $710.3 million total revenue; off $11 million from the $721.8 million rev analysts originally estimated. Advertising sales hit $557.9 million, with programmatic accounting for 39 percent of the intake as of Q4.
The third largest video player behind YouTube and Facebook, JW Player, reached one billion monthly viewers in December 2014. It’s the first time the video platform surpassed the one billion-viewer milestone in a single month, a 130 percent growth from the year prior. Additionally in December, JWP hit 94 billion video plays (a 570 percent growth from 2013), four billion video hours watched (a 640 percent growth from year prior) and 4.25 billion monthly ad impressions (a 430 percent growth from previous year). JWP also announced that its software developer kit SDK for Android is now available for licensing.
