Gesture Control (Virtual Reality): In virtual reality, gesture control refers to a feature in which sensors identify users’ real-world hand movements as a cue to interacting with a VR scene.
Google just combined the product teams for YouTube Music and Google Play Music, the tech giant’s two music subscription services. The Verge was the first to report the moves. Nothing will change for users at the moment, as both apps will continue to exist separately for now. But as The Verge points out, it’s highly likely that Google is setting the stage to create a single unified music app. “Music is very important to Google and we’re evaluating how to bring together our music offerings to deliver the best possible product for our users, music partners and artists,” Google said in a statement. “Nothing will change for users today and we’ll provide plenty of notice before any changes are made.”
AT&T’s DirecTV NOW live TV service has a new addition: Starz. Starz on DirecTV Now is priced at $8 per month. In addition to Starz and Starz Encore VOD content, three live channels – Starz, Starz Encore, and Starz Kids & Family – are launching on the service. Starz says the initial launch will feature over 2,500 movies and TV episodes.

Publicis Groupe just landed a major account. Publicis agencies Mediavest|Spark and DigitasLBI will take over media buying and planning duties for Mattel. The toy-maker’s decision reportedly concludes a review it began in October. It’s been a good week for Publicis; on Tuesday, it took over media buying and planning for Molson Coors Brewing Co.
Epix is now available for the fourth-gen Apple TV. Available to all Epix subscribers, the new Apple TV app lets users watch Epix’s live linear channels, about 2,000 on-demand movies, and original series such as Berlin Station and Graves. New subs who sign up through the Apple TV can get a free four weeks of access; afterward they’ll have to sign up through a pay-TV service. Epix was already available for Amazon Fire tablets, Android and iPhone tablets, Roku devices, Android TVs, TiVos, Microsoft Xbox Ones, Sony PlayStation 4s, and Google Chromecast, the web and, of course, participating pay-TV providers.
To determine the TV ads generating the most digital response, attention analytics company iSpot.tv measures digital actions across Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and all major search engines. Here, a look at the top brands that advertised during Super Bowl LI on Fox.

Netflix came out on top in terms of share of voice, prompting 12.83% of all digital activity prompted by ads during the big game. The Netflix “Stranger Things” promo dove over the goal line past Budweiser, which finished second at 11.71% with its immigration-themed spot. Rounding out the top 5: T-Mobile (8.59%), Mr. Clean (7.78%) and 84 Lumber (5.74%). In total, 65 brands ran 104 spots during the Super Bowl, generating estimated revenue of $509.6 million across 49.9 minutes of ads.” – iSpot.tv
Vevo is bringing some new muscle to its sales and advertising efforts. The music video platform has hired Kevin McGurn as its new Chief Sales Officer. McGurn joins Vevo from digital media company Fullscreen, where he served as Head of Sales. He also previously held positions at Shazam, Hulu, and NBCUniversal. McGurn joins the company just as it’s planning to ramp up its international efforts; just this week, Vevo announced plans to delay the launch of its previously-announced subscription service, instead focusing on original content production and overseas expansion. Vevo is owned by Sony Music and Universal Music. Google and Abu Dhabi Media hold minority stakes.
Apple just nabbed an exec from one of its chief competitors. Timothy Twerdahl is now a VP at the tech giant; he’d previously headed up Amazon’s Fire TV group since 2013. At Apple, he’ll oversee marketing for Apple TV, according to a report from Bloomberg. In the past, Twerdahl has also held positions at Netflix, Roku, and Motorola. He officially joined Apple earlier this month. According to Bloomberg, Apple exec Pete Distad – who previously held the position Twerdahl now occupies – will now work on Apple’s content deals under SVP Eddie Cue.
Vimeo has a new Chief Technology Officer. The IAC-owned video-sharing platform has tapped Michael Concannon to replace former CTO Andrew Pile, who left Vimeo last year after almost a decade at the company. Concannon has held a number of senior tech roles over the years. He most recently served as CTO of the fashion company Eloquii, before which he served as CTO of the Amazon-owned Quidsi. At Vimeo, he’ll report directly to IAC CEO Joey Levin, who also currently serves as interim CEO at Vimeo.
Caroline Horner, formerly comScore’s SVP of TV and Cross Platform Product Management, has started a new ad agency in partnership with Michael Finn, formerly El Rey Network’s SVP of Ad Sales and Marketing. (Both execs left their previous roles within the last couple of months, specifically to start the new agency.) The agency, called SpicyTequila Inc., will focus heavily on addressable advertising, with an emphasis on analytics and targeting capabilities.

Smart television marketer VIZIO got some unwanted publicity this week when it agreed to pay some $2 million to settle charges that it wrongfully sold data about its viewers’ behavior.
