Sony Pictures Entertainment co-chairman Amy Pascal is stepping down from her position, but isn’t leaving the lot.
“I have spent almost my entire professional life at Sony Pictures and I am energized to be starting this new chapter based at the company I call home,” said Pascal, who’s launching a production venture at the studio. “I am happy to say that Amy’s decision is not the end of her relationship with the studio but the start of a new and exciting chapter in her extraordinary career that promises to be mutually beneficial,” said Sony Entertainment CEO Michael Lynton. The announcement comes in the wake of the computer hacking scandal related to Seth Rogan movie The Interview.
During Wednesday night’s newscast, NBC Nightly News anchor Brian Williams offered a retraction and apology for his claim that he had been in a helicopter downed by enemy fire in Iraq in 2003. In fact, said Williams, the helicopter he rode in arrived at the site an hour later. “In an effort to honor and thank a veteran who protected me and so many others after a ground-fire incident in the desert during the Iraq war, I made a mistake in recalling the incidents of 12 years ago,” said Williams. “I want to apologize.”
Dan Rather, who retired from CBS News ten years ago after being forced to retract a report on George W. Bush’s National Guard service, responded to the Williams scandal by telling Politico Williams is “an honest, decent man,” but the Twitterverse was less generous. Using trending hashtags #BrianWilliamsMemories and #BrianWilliamsMisremembers, social media users Photoshopped pictures of the anchor “reporting” from sites like the creation of the Declaration of Independence and the first moon landing.
NBC handed out early renewals to dramas The Blacklist, Grimm, Chicago Fire, Chicago PD and Law & Order: SVU. Awaiting word: Mysteries of Laura, Constantine, State of Affairs, Marry Me and About a Boy.
Acknowledging in an earnings call that Fox’s programming bench this season was “a little thin” and ratings left ad revenue “well short of plan,” Chase Carey, president and COO of 21st Century Fox said the next 21 months will be “a period of investment in new programming” at Fox: “Our priority is really building hits, first and foremost.” On the up side, cable properties FX Networks, Fox News and Fox Sports 1 saw an 11 percent gain in ad revenue for the reporting period.
Damon Wayans Jr. is leaving Fox’s New Girl at the end of the comedy’s fourth season, airing Tuesdays at 9p. “Working with this incredibly talented and funny cast and crew has been one of the best experiences of my career,” said Wayans. Apparently, the feeling’s mutual. “We are working on crafting an exit for him that will leave the door open for many more returns,” said exec producer Liz Meriwether.
