Evo laid out its lineup for this year’s festivities, with nine games being tapped for the main stage of this year’s show, including: Street Fighter V: Arcade Edition; Dragon Ball FighterZ; Tekken 7; BlazBlue: Cross Tag Battle; Under Night In-Birth Exe:Late[st]; Super Smash Bros. Ultimate; SoulCalibur VI; Mortal Kombat 11; and Samurai Shodown. Notably absent is long-time title Super Smash Bros Melee. The four titles that will be in the arena for finals on Sunday will be Street Fighter V: Arcade Edition, Tekken 7, BlazBlue: Cross Tag Battle, and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. Evo 2019 will take place on August 2-4 at the Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada.
 
 
COMPETITION and VENUES

 
Collegiate StarLeague, a division of WorldGaming Network, has been selected by Capcom as an official esports partner and will launch its first-ever collegiate league for Street Fighter V. “Fighting games have always been at the core of the competitive scene,” says Wim Stocks, CEO & General Manager of Collegiate StarLeague and WorldGaming Network. The program, officially dubbed Street Fighter League: NA-College 2019, will kick off the partnership with a cross-country college tour in March, starting March 23 and 24 at Indiana University and continuing at UBC, Rutgers, UCONN, the CSL Finals; UCSD, University of Washington, the East Coast Smash Divisional; and UGA.
 
Epic Games laid out the road ahead for Fortnite esports, where $100 million is up for grabs this year, leading into this summer’s Fortnite World Cup where $30 million will be on the line. The NYC event will take place from July 26-28 with each player guaranteed a minimum of $50,000, and featuring both an individual competition (Solos) and a two-player-team event (Duos). Leading up to the championship, players can punch their ticket as well as providing prize support to select third-party tournaments. These initiatives will allow the developer to award the remainder of the $100M in prizing it committed to Fortnite’s first competitive season last year via ten weekly online qualifier tournaments beginning on April 13. Each qualifier will award $1M in total prizing. The news was announced in an esports update from Epic Games, which also noted that the publisher will offer an additional $1 million a week in separate tournaments through the end of the year, with competitions that will “feature a wider variety of modes and formats.” Finally, Epic also vowed to continue to offer prize support to select third-party tournaments.
 
The NBA 2K League announced the competition structure for the 2019 season.  The 18-week season will launch on April 2 with The Tipoff and will conclude Saturday, Aug. 3 with the 2019 NBA 2K League Finals. All regular-season games will take place at the NBA 2K League Studio Powered by Intel in Long Island City, New York, and will be livestreamed on Twitch.  Weekly regular-season matchups will shift to the following times for the 2019 season: Wednesdays from 6-11p, Thursdays from 6-10p and Fridays from 6-11p. Additionally, all 21 teams will have three bye weeks during the season, along with a league-wide bye week from July 3-5.  Teams will play a total of 16 regular-season games. The NBA 2K League will rebroadcast a “Game of the Day” in a primetime evening viewing slot for fans in Europe.
  
FIFA announced plans to host the inaugural version of the FIFA eNations Cup, running April 13-14 and showcasing a national team competition on the Road to the FIFA eWorld Cup 2019 for the first time. The event sees 16 national teams representing all of FIFA’s confederations, CONCACAF, CONMEBOL, CAF, OFC, AFC and UEFA who will be invited to take part in this event. As one of eight Majors in the EA SPORTS FIFA 19 Global Series, the event will offer up to 1,500 Global Series points in addition to the prize money also on offer.
 
The Overwatch League is reporting that season two of the organization has seen overall global viewership upticks, with a total reach of 13 million people, up 30% year-over-year, with a total average minute audience of 440,000, up 14%, across more than 190 countries.
 
Blizzard Entertainment confirmed its Hearthstone esports plans which are getting a facelift in 2019, with over $4 million on the line for players this time around. Hearthstone’s esports system is being sliced into three tiers, starting with the Masters Qualifiers, a slate of around 30 weekly online tournaments operated via online tournament organization platform Battlefy. Winners of these competitions will be eligible to participate in the second tier, which is titled the Masters Tour, consisting of multiple large-scale, in-person tournaments throughout the year that will kick off in June at the LINQ hotel in Las Vegas with a prize pool of $250,000, although the prize pool can get a boost through the purchase of limited-time in-game items. The top tier of play will be known as the Hearthstone Grandmasters, although details on that level of play will be announced down the road.
 
Tencent and Garena locked in Vietnam to play host for the Arena of Valor World Cup 2019, which moves from LA this year. The World Cup features 12 teams, including 10 from Asia, a team from Europe, as well as a South American team. “The AWC coming to Vietnam is a huge event and matter of pride for all Vietnamese fans, especially with last season’s other international pit-stop, AIC being held in Bangkok,” said Team Flash owner Terence Ting. “As the most popular mobile game in the country AoV has definitely helped to raise the overall profile of esports in Vietnam alongside its PC predecessor League of Legends. Garena has done a great job of promoting esports in the country and made AoV extremely mainstream in the past year, and AWC will be a major milestone for Vietnam esports.”
 
World Cyber Games announced that Blizzard Entertainment’s Warcraft III: The Frozen Throne has been selected as one of the official game titles for WCG 2019 Xi’an. The Grand Final will take place at Qujiang New District, Xian, China in July 18-21.
 
The Intel Grand Slam is returning in 2019 where, starting with the IEM Katowice CS:GO Major 2019, teams will have a new opportunity to win four eligible events from a lineup of Intel Extreme Masters, ESL One, ESL Pro League and DreamHack Masters calendar within ten attempts to secure a prize of $1 million. IEM Sydney 2019, DreamHack Masters Dallas 2019 and ESL One Cologne 2019 are confirmed as the next stops in the circuit.
 
 
INSIGHTS


Ninja has long been known as the face of gaming. The blue-haired influencer has made it to the front cover of ESPN, and starred alongside NFL pros in a Super Bowl ad. Although Ninja’s mainstream popularity has certainly increased as a result of live appearances, the competition on Twitch has been stiff, outperforming Ninja’s viewership during the first two months of 2019.

  • Ninja’s rise to the top of Twitch was incredible: The streamer’s monthly hours watched increased by 84.5% over the span of three months, and followers gained increased by 78.9% in just a single month. 
  • Ninja’s viewership decline has been even steeper: Monthly hours watched has decreased by 126.3% since his May peak, and monthly followers gained have declined by 151.6% since March. 
  • The Legacy of Ninja will be tough to beat: The average difference between Ninja and his competitors’ hours watched from Feb – Dec 2018 was 12.51M.

TEAMS

 
Two major global media conglomerates, Comcast Spectacor and South Korea’s SK Telecom, are teaming up to form a global esports joint venture named T1 Entertainment & Sports. The initiative will include the SK Telecom T1 League of Legends (LoL) Champions Korea (LCK) team, as well as teams in competitive gaming segments that include Fortnite, PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds, Super Smash Brothers, Hearthstone and Apex Legends. The T1 joint venture will blend the strengths of the two esports organizations and will feature operations in Seoul, Philadelphia and Los Angeles. Comcast’s Philadelphia Fusion and Fusion University Overwatch Contenders franchises will not be part of the T1 joint venture and will remain fully owned and operated by Comcast Spectacor, however.
 
G2 Esports locked in a $17.3 million funding round that includes participation from prominent New York investors and a slate of global tech moguls. Joining the lineup are investors such as Seal Rock Partners, Inner Circle Ventures, Al Tylis and Dan Gilbert, who join Parkwood Corporation and Everblue Management to lead the round. Alongside this group, G2 also includes tech and sports entrepreneurs including Yext Co-Founder and President, Brian Distelburger; Doodle Founder, Myke Naef; and Topgolf Media President, YuChiang Cheng; among others. The new capital will be used to accelerate global expansion, fund franchise fees, and continue to invest in world-class business and content operations.
 
 
PLATFORMS

Twitch and Team Liquid are bonding, with the two brands unveiling a multi-year partnership that will see the platform become the exclusive sponsorship sales representative of the organization. The deal will give Twitch the exclusive rights to manage sales and to broaden Team Liquid’s connections with brands seeking to design disruptive and thoughtful partnerships with one of the world’s most accomplished esports teams. According to the announcement, the accord also provides one-stop access to Team Liquid and the 360-degree promotional opportunities found on Twitch, streamlining the hurdles brands frequently encounter when trying to enter the space.
 
Major League Soccer inked a one-year partnership with Twitch to boost its base and provide next month’s eMLS Cup with more prominent placement on the site. According to Bloomberg, the league is also considering expanding the partnership to include nongaming content which might include highlights or other video content from its 24 teams.
 
DreamHack and 7Sports, ProSiebenSat.1 Group’s sports business unit, locked in a licensing agreement that allows the platform to report exclusively on TV in Germany and online about all DreamHack festivals. DreamHack produces hundreds of hours of high-quality esports content every year, and this partnership with 7Sports further shows the value of that content. FANAI INSIGHTS

 
Esports fans often compose only a sliver of a title’s overall community. FanAI compared the followers of a game’s official handle with followers of related esports handles to study the crossover between casual and competitive fans. Valve’s Counter-Strike: Global Offensive showed the greatest crossover between fans of the game and fans of its esports scene. 37% of @CSGO_Dev followers also follow one or more related esports handles. By contrast, only 2% of @ClashRoyale followers also follow a Clash Royale League handle. This disparity is in part due to the title’s audience segment. Games with the least crossover were titles that emphasized casual, pick-up-and-go play, while more competitively focused titles had more fans in common. These results suggest that games with a deep competitive focus are often better suited to becoming fully fledged, independent esports, rather than marketing promotions for a publisher.
 
 
INDUSTRY
 
Whistle released findings from its latest research study “From Nerdy to Norm,” detailing Gen Z males’ opinions on gaming (more info can be found HERE). Among the highlights:
  • For Gen Z, gaming is the new “going to the mall.” Playing and watching is the way they socialize.
  • Unlike millennial males, gaming for Gen Z is less about measuring up against their friends, and more a point of connection, camaraderie and companionship.
  • More than three in four Gen Z males are regular video game watchers, a 25% increase over their millennial counterparts.
 
PlayBrain, a company that powers esports events in Japan, announced a $1.9 million seed round led by BITKRAFT Esports Ventures. PlayBrain will use the new funding to scale the team, accelerate growth, and support costs to lead the creative direction, operation and commercialization of League of Legends Japan League.
 
NAB Show is introducing the “Esports Experience” to the annual confab. The new exhibit floor destination located in the North Hall of the Las Vegas Convention Center and features exhibits, a theater and educational programming that showcase the latest online gaming trends and content delivery technologies. The 2019 NAB Show will be held April 6-11, with exhibits April 8-11.
 
Tencent is becoming the latest name to enter the cloud gaming wars. A session at GDC 2019, according to GamesIndustry, saw plans for Tencent Instant Play, a platform that will operate similarly to Microsoft’s Project Xcloud and Google’s Project Stream, in partnership with Intel and covering both Windows PC gaming and Android mobile.

After nearly 13 years as President and COO of Nintendo of America, Reggie Fils-Aime is set to retire.
