Super Bowl ads featuring a celebrity have outperformed those without celebs by 25% for the past three years, according to online engagement data from EDO. For this year’s Big Game, the top five celebrities featured in non-entertainment spots were John Travolta in T-Mobile’s Summer Nights (24x more likely to generate consumer engagement than the median-performing celebrity); Bradley Cooper in T-Mobile’s Ad Attempt (12.3x more likely); Nick Jonas in Dexcom’s Feels Like Magic (11.1x more likely); Chris Stapleton in Ram’s The Next Stage (7.9x more likely); and Alicia Silverstone in Rauten’s Clueless About Retail (7.4x more likely).

The Super Bowl ads that drove the most engagement, ranked by EDO, were Warner Bros. Pictures for “The Flash” Trailer; He Gets Us for Love Your Enemy; Disney for Dream Come True; Temu for Shop Like a Billionaire; and Live Nation for U2 Live at the Sphere.

Consumption of linear TV is hitting historic lows as streaming gains continue, according to Samba TV’s “State of Viewership” report. Key findings include:
· Less than half of US households watched linear TV every day in 2Q22, with average daily reach in 3Q22 the lowest it has been in the past seven quarters.
· Less than half (48%) of US adults have a monthly cable or satellite subscription, including 65% of Gen Z.
· About seven in ten US adults identify as binge watchers.
· Shows generally have a shelf life of two weeks to attract viewers (notable exception: Gen Z hit “Wednesday”).
· As budgets tighten, 54% of streaming households watched content across two or less services.

Weigel Broadcasting is rebranding Decades as Catchy Comedy, offering a library of classic sitcoms headlined by favorite stars. Starting March 27, the refreshed over-the-air national broadcast television network can be found on broadcast stations of FOX Television Stations, Weigel Broadcasting Co. and other affiliate partners, clearing 69.5% of U.S. television markets. As with Decades, Catchy Comedy will also be available on the Philo and Frndly TV streaming platforms.

The BBC has renewed “Call the Midwife” for seasons 14 and 15. The series, a top-rated drama in the UK, airs on PBS in the US.

“Paris in Love” was picked up for a second season by Peacock. The reality series focuses on Paris Hilton, “a true renaissance woman,” said Rod Aiessa, EVP Entertainment Content, Unscripted.

Yamiche Alcindor is stepping down as moderator for PBS’ “Washington Week.” “This move will allow me to focus full time on my commitments to NBC News and to finish my upcoming memoir,” said the journalist, who took over the job from Robert Costa in 2021. Her last day will be February 24.

Genius Brands International announced the launch of its first AI-generated children’s series, “Kidaverse Fast Facts,” utilizing OpenAI’s ChatGPT, among other AI technologies. The series will premiere in March across Genius Networks’ YouTube and social channels, and then broaden its footprint under both Kartoon Channel! and Ameba across multiple AVOD, SVOD and FAST platforms.

Amazon Freevee ordered “Monumental: An Artists Den Experience,” a series of hour-long specials featuring a performance and interviews with recording artists in iconic locations. First up: Ellie Goulding at Kew Gardens on March 31.

Pocket.watch has signed a new deal with The Roku Channel Kids & Family which brings three new pocket.watch content specials and one new series to The Roku Channel. Pocket.watch was an inaugural launch partner for Kids & Family on The Roku Channel when it debuted in 2019.

Barney’s back. Mattel is relaunching the purple dinosaur franchise with a new, animated preschool series, YouTube content, music and more. The show, set to debut in 2024, will be produced by Corus Entertainment’s Nelvana and executive produced by Fred Soulie and Christopher Keenan for Mattel Television and by Colin Bohm and Pam Westman for Nelvana. “With our modern take on Barney, we hope to inspire the next generation to listen, care, and dream big,” said Soulie, SVP and GM of Mattel Television. “We think that parents, many of whom will fondly remember the original Barney from their own childhoods, will love the show, too.” “Barney & Friends” aired on PBS from 1992-2010.

Kimberly Harris (“The Crossover”) will serve as showrunner for limited series based on the biography In Black and White: The Life of Sammy Davis Jr. by Will Haygood. The eight-parter comes from Lee Daniels and 20th Television.

Universal Television Alternative Studio, a division of Universal Studio Group, and Loud Minds (“Walking with Dinosaurs”) announced that it has begun filming “Surviving Earth.” The production visits eight mass extinction moments throughout the Earth’s history to see what the planet’s past can tell us about its future. “Surviving Earth” is a co-production between Loud Minds and Universal Television Alternative Studio.

COMING UP

New Original A&E Special “Undercover: Caught on Tape” premieres Thursday, March 2 at 10p. The special tells the stories of dangerous undercover police work through the real video and audio recordings of the officers in the moment as well as interviews with the people closest to the action.

Peacock dating series “Queens Court” has a binge drop date: March 16. Hosts Holly Robinson Peete and Rodney Peete help celebs Tamar Braxton, Evelyn Lozada and Nivea navigate the ups and downs of looking for love.

Netflix’s “Seven Kings Must Die” premieres April 14. The film continues the story of “The Last Kingdom,” which ran for five seasons on the streamer.

Axing for a friend: New Shock Docs special “The Curse of Lizzie Borden” premieres Sunday, March 5 at 9p on Travel Channel. A team of paranormal experts investigates whether a family curse led to the famous murders.

STREAMING

Starting June 26, Peacock Premium will no longer be bundled for free for Comcast Infinity customers, though they will be able to purchase a subscription as an add-on at a discounted rate. Last month, Peacock stopped allowing new users to sign up for the free tier.

All five seasons of “Arrested Development” are leaving Netflix on March 15. That includes the three seasons that aired on Fox from 2003-06, as well as Netflix’s two revival seasons in 2013 and 2018. The Fox seasons can be found on Hulu.

Hall of Famer Derek Jeter has joined his former Yankees teammate Alex Rodriguez as part of Fox Sports’ studio coverage for the upcoming MLB season. The announcement was made during Fox’s Super Bowl pregame show.

Fifth Season (formerly Endeavor Content) has secured international sales for returning series “The Congregation,” the six-episode drama from TV4 and C More, which explores the notorious real life Swedish cult murder in Knutby that shook the nation in 2004. The upcoming season two will be titled “The Congregation: Bride of Christ.”

“The Journey with Andrea Bocelli” will premiere on Paramount+ in Canada (March 14) and internationally – Latin America, Brazil (March 14) and South Korea (March 16) – following its recent release in Italy (February 1). Across three episodes and a 90-minute special, the series follows Bocelli as he travels Italy’s Via Francigena on horseback.

Pernell Media announced pre-sales and co-production deals on its documentary series “Rise and Fall of the Mayas.” Originally commissioned by RMC Decouverte and pre-bought by Histoire TV for the French market, National Geographic, ZDFinfo and TV5 Quebec will also broadcast the series worldwide apart from in the US, German-speaking Europe and French Canada.

Globo and TelevisaUnivision closed a three-year agreement that expands Globoplay’s distribution of content and allows Globoplay to premier in Brazil both the productions of Mexican free-to-air channel las estrellas and ViX+, as well as access to the historical content shows produced by Televisa.

RATINGS

Ahead of the release of Fox Sports’ Super Bowl numbers, AdImpact reported Sunday’s Super Bowl game viewing peaked at 124 million near the end of the second quarter, and hit 123.5 million for the halftime show. By AdImpact’s count, viewing levels ranged from 98.8 million at kickoff to 113.4 million at the end of the game. “The combination of a close game and a younger-skewed halftime show, made for the perfect combination to keep viewers interested right to the final seconds,” said Rick McGuire, Director of Sales at AdImpact.

Netflix’s “Wednesday” was the most-watched premiere of 2022 in the 40-day viewership window, reports Samba TV, beating HBO’s “House of the Dragon,” which was first in the 15-day window. The “Addams Family” spinoff benefited from younger audiences making the show go viral on social media.
