PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

FX ordered Y, a TV adaptation of post-apocalyptic comic book series Y: The Last Man, co-created and written by Michael Green and Aida Mashaka Croal. Diane Lane leads an ensemble cast featuring Barry Keoghan, Imogen Poots, Lashana Lynch, Juliana Canfield with Marin Ireland and Amber Tamblyn.

Michael B. Jordan’s Outlier Society Productions inked a first look TV series deal with Amazon Studios. The agreement comes with an inclusion rider mandating diverse hiring. “The key to Michael’s success, going back to the beginning of his career, has been his ability to elevate each role he has brought to life, often shattering stereotypes along the way,” said Amazon Studios head Jennifer Salke. “One of the reasons it’s so exciting to be in business with him, Alana [Mayo] and Outlier Society is because they are part of the new wave of creative talents emphasizing diversity both above and below the line, and using their success to empower others.”

Freeform ordered a Party of Five reboot from the original creators, Amy Lippman and Chris Keyser, to series with a ten-episode order. One-hour drama from Sony Pictures Television will follow five children as they navigate daily life struggles to survive as a family unit after their parents are suddenly deported to Mexico.

TCA TALK

Netflix “is not telling you the whole story” about ratings, FX CEO Jon Landgraf admonished journalists at TCA yesterday. Landgraf noted the streamer is not using apples-to-apples metrics when it comes to shows like You, which Netflix said delivered 40 million households. In fact, You averaged 8 million viewers, as counted by traditional methods, noted Landgraf. “Many Silicon Valley companies have long used metrics based on video views or video starts, which inflates their perceived usage and is not a remotely accurate representation of a long-form program’s performance,” he said.

Landgraf also announced season four of Fargo will go into production this winter – in fact, the show will go on as long as creator Noah Hawley wants. “As long as he can come up with fantastic ideas, we’ll make them forever,” said the exec. Hayley’s Legion, however, will end with season three. The series, based on the Marvel Comics, was always envisioned as a three-season show, said Landgraf.

The stories continue for American Horror Story and American Crime Story at FX, even though creator Ryan Murphy is decamping for Netflix. The future for Feud, however, is less clear. A Charles and Diana season was scrapped because “we didn’t feel we had the material right,” said Landgraf, and, “right now, Ryan doesn’t have another idea for the next cycle.”

Emmy-winning Atlanta will be back for season three, but don’t hold your breath for its arrival. Donald Glover is sort of the king of all media, and he just has had an incredibly complicated life,” Landgraf explained of the delay. “He’s had personal things he’s had to deal with, from injuries to other things I’d rather not say publicly that just have to do with not with his personal life but his extended family.” The postponement is good news for Atlanta’s Emmys competition – the show will sit out the awards this year.

TECH TALK

Machine learning can improve the process for identifying customer needs, while reducing research time substantially in helping brands bring products to market, according to a study from two MIT researchers. The researchers tackled the challenge of how to most efficiently use user-generated content to identify customer needs in ways that are cost-efficient and accurate. “As more and more people turn to the digital marketplace to research products, share their opinions, and exchange product experiences, large amounts of UGC data is available quickly and at a low incremental cost to companies,” the authors said. “In many brand categories, UGC is extensive.” Example: there are more than 300,000 reviews on health and personal care products on Amazon alone. If UGC can be mined for customer needs, it has the potential to identify customer needs better than direct customer interviews, said the researchers in the study, found in the February edition the Informs journal, “Identifying Customer Needs from User-Generated Content.”

Ten months after launching its first data center in Indonesia, Chinese tech company Alibaba Group’s cloud computing arm has launched a second data center. The move will help the company establish an early presence in Indonesia and diversify its business, as well as bolster its international presence at a time when economic growth slackens and trade risks loom over China, according to data and analytics company GlobalData. “Outside of China, the company has gained some advantages by getting into markets such as Malaysia and Indonesia early,” said Siow Meng Soh, Technology Analyst at GlobalData. “Indonesia is experiencing economic growth but its cloud market is relatively small. This is a strategic move since start-ups and SMEs in general are more ready to adopt a cloud-native approach and can become heavy cloud users as they scale up.”

Ad tech company Taptica announced the acquisition of RhythmOne for $176 million, pending shareholder approval. RhythmOne provides cross-screen solutions focused on connected TV. The combination of RhythmOne and Tremor Video DSP, which Taptica acquired in August 2017, will create one of the leading independent video advertising companies in the U.S. Ofer Druker, who has led Tremor Video DSP as executive chairman, will be appointed CEO of the group. The acquisition of RhythmOne “will allow us to combine its strong pedigree in CTV media with Tremor Video DSP’s years of experience in TV retargeting to create a robust and powerful video company that will be able to offer a variety of advanced capabilities to our clients,” said Druker. “RhythmOne will also add to our media exchange capabilities through its Private Marketplace, helping us offer enhanced reach, quality and results.”

  ADVERTISING

Kantar Media’s preliminary estimate for in-game spending for Super Bowl LIII is $382 million, the third-largest ever, after 2017 and 2018. Ads accounted for 23% of the CBS broadcast, with 49 minutes, 45 seconds of national commercial time from paying sponsors, the NFL and CBS-owned networks. Anheuser Busch InBev was the top spender, ponying up $59 million.

Agencies can get a sense of how consumers will react to their ads with a new ad testing platform. Ad Brawl, from Crispin Porter Bogusky and programmatic ad network Brandzooka, uses the Brandzooka creative testing algorithm to measure variables, then scores ads on their appeal.

California’s privacy law, allowing consumers to learn what personal data business have about them and opt out of the sale of the info, is too broad, argued advertising associations in a letter to California Attorney General Xavier Becerra. The Association of National Advertisers, American Advertising Federation, Interactive Advertising Bureau, American Association of Advertising Agencies and Network Advertising Initiative wrote, “We request that the AG clarify that businesses may offer reasonable options to consumers to choose the types of ‘sales’ they want to opt out of, the types of data they want deleted, or to completely opt out – and not have to just provide an all-or-nothing option.”

Integrated partners for Telemundo’s upcoming series Betty en NY, launching Wednesday, February 6 at 9p, include Maybelline, Oreo, Sour Patch Kids, and State Farm, among others.  Maybelline will be positioned as an essential beauty brand, Oreo will “help spark moments of playful connections,” Sour Patch Kids “will add drama with some Sour, then Sweet mischief,” and State Farm will become a partner ensuring life goes right for the dramedy’s characters, as the brand comes to life via an in-show moment featuring the accessibility of State Farm agents.
