Oscars host Neil Patrick Harris broke the news via Twitter on Tuesday that Frozen songwriters Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez will pen an original tune for the awards show. “We love the Oscars and have always been huge Neil Patrick Harris fans, so when he asked us to write him a song for this year’s show we said, ‘Yes!’ before he could finish the sentence – it’s possible he may have been asking us for something else,” said the Lopezes. Spectacle airs Sunday, February 22 at 7p on ABC.

IN THE NEWS

A PSA during the first quarter of the Sunday’s Super Bowl will address domestic violence. The spot from No More shows a woman pretending to order a pizza to cover the fact that she’s giving a 911 operator her address; the NFL footed production costs in addition to donating commercial time. The league has drawn fire for its handling of domestic violence cases among its players, particularly since video surfaced of then-Baltimore Raven Ray Rice punching his fiancee in an elevator.

This year’s Golden Globes winners may still be debating where to stash their statuettes, but the Hollywood Foreign Press Association and dick clark productions have already set a date for next year’s NBC event: Sunday, January 10, 2016 from the Beverly Hilton. The 2015 ceremony clocked a 5.8/16 rating among A18-49 and 19.3 million total viewers.

Fusion is one of 14 media companies to launch a channel on Snapchat as a part of Discover, an ad-supported feature with curated content for the service’s young-skewing demo; posts and videos disappear when new editions come out. “Fusion’s audience was born on the digital frontier and we need to be engaging with this young, diverse generation everywhere they live,” said Fusion CEO Isaac Lee. “Social media companies tell us what to read based on what’s most recent or most popular,” said Snapchat’s blog post Tuesday. “We see it differently. We count on editors and artists, not clicks and shares, to determine what’s important.”

Syfy grabbed U.S. rights for street magic series Close Up Kings, a UK-Canada co-production from Zig Zag Productions and Yap Films. Discovery Networks International bought the series for outside the US and Canada. It’s the second recent acquisition of a magic series for Syfy – the net also picked up Troy: Street Magic from Zig Zag.

PRODUCTION AND DEVELOPMENT

Craig Ferguson and his Green Mountain West production company struck a multi-year overall TV deal with Lionsgate that will have the former Late Late Show host developing scripted and unscripted programming. Ferguson’s Celebrity Name Game, recently renewed for season two, is co-produced by Debmar-Mercury (owned by Lionsgate) and FremantleMedia North America. “I’m delighted that Lionsgate is now so successful that they can even add me to their otherwise prestigious cavalcade of stars without significantly damaging their brand,” said Ferguson.

New Bear Grylls adventure series Mission Survive will feature celebs in a rainforest survival competition. Series from Bear Grylls Ventures, Electus and Betty was commissioned by ITV.

ABC picked up four pilots from ABC Studios: comedies Chev and Bev, starring National Lampoon’s Vacation duo Chevy Chase and Beverly D’Angelo, and an untitled project based on the life of columnist Dan Savage about a couple whose son comes out of the closet; plus Shondaland thriller The Catch and procedural Broad Squad.

CBS ordered a pilot for hourlong action comedy Rush Hour, based on the film franchise about a Hong Kong police officer paired with an LA cop. Warner Bros. Television and Doozer are producing.

NBC issued pilot orders for Sharing, a workplace comedy from Jimmy Fallon, and an untitled project in which Monica Potter (Parenthood) will star in and exec produce, about a woman juggling her family and three ex-husbands.

Classical music drama Virtuoso scored a pilot order from HBO. The project from True Blood creator Alan Ball, set in 18th century Vienna, counts Elton John among its exec producers.

John Morayniss, CEO of eOne Television, has signed a new long-term agreement with the company that will continue his oversight of all production, financing, licensing and worldwide distribution activities.
