CYNOPSISDIGITAL
01.12.17 Good morning. It’s Thursday January 12, 2017 and this is your first early morning digital briefing.
Reciprocal Link: A reciprocal link is an agreement between two webmasters to provide a hyperlink within their own site to each other’s sites. Reciprocal links are generally pre-arranged by sites with mutually benefitting audiences.
Instagram’s Stories, the Snapchat-like short video feature that the Facebook-owned app launched launched last year, is moving toward monetization. Instagram is introducing interstitial full-screen video and photo ads that will appear in-between Stories. Running a max of 15 seconds, users can swipe through the ads to skip them. Over 30 advertisers are on-board for the format’s initial test run, including Netflix, Capital One, and Nike. In addition, Instagram has announced Stories Insights, a set of analytics tools enabling advertisers to keep track of audience metrics for Stories. “For businesses converted to a business profile, you’ll be able to see the reach, impressions, replies and exits for each individual story within Business Tools,” Instagram said in a blog post. Instagram says that its Stories feature now has over 150 million daily active users.
Facebook has rapidly become something of a news brand (even if CEO Mark Zuckerberg insists it’s not a “traditional” media company). Now the social giant is announcing the Facebook Journalism Project, an initiative aimed at strengthening Facebook’s ties with journos and news orgs. The Project will involve working with media partners to create new storytelling and news products, providing journalists with more tools and training, and creating educational materials for Facebook users to “make smart choices about the news they read.” (If you’ve heard the phrase “fake news” in the past few months, you know why that last one is important.) The moves come about a month after Facebook announced efforts to partner with third-party fact-checkers in order to clearly label questionable news stories.

A new report from the FCC’s Wireless Telecommunications Bureau concludes that AT&T and Verizon may be running afoul of the agency’s net neutrality rules. For instance, the report expresses concern with AT&T’s Sponsored Data plan, which enables users to consume certain digital content without eating into their data limits. “It would appear that AT&T’s practices inflict significant unreasonable disadvantages on edge providers and unreasonably interfere with their ability to compete against AT&T’s affiliate, in violation of the General Conduct Rule,” the FCC concludes. The report also takes specific aim at AT&T’s DirecTV Now live TV service, which users can watch under the Sponsored Data feature. It’s all likely a moot point; the FCC’s net neutrality rules passed on party lines, and the report is not likely to be seconded once the agency’s partisan makeup changes later this month.

DIGITAL SPOTLIGHT
In the digital age, are even the age-old Monopoly tokens in danger of being replaced? Hasbro has opened up online voting on the next generation of Monopoly game-pieces, offering 50 different options to choose from. It’s entirely possible that the shoe could be preplaced with a hashtag; the Scottie dog with a winking emoji face; or the thimble with a cell phone. (Oddly, Hasbro’s version of a cell phone looks like one of those mid-80s monstrosities, not a modern-day smartphone.) From CNET, learn more here. (And if you want to save Scottie, then vote!)
See you tomorrow,
David Teich
