CFP’s Bill Hancock will remain on the field for another three years. The Board of Managers for the College Football Playoff announced a three-year extension of the contract for the organization’s executive director. “Bill Hancock is not only one of the most widely respected people in college football, he’s one of the kindest, most decent, and able people anyone will ever meet,” said C. Max Nikias, the President of the University of Southern California and Chairman of the Board of Managers. “Under Bill’s leadership, the playoff for three years in a row has been a huge success, making it an event that is loved by fans, students and alumni throughout the country. We’re delighted to extend the contract of a man who is so dedicated to helping students be successful in college and in life.”
The United States, Canada and Mexico are reportedly talking about making a three-way bid to host the new 48-team World Cup in 2026, according to the AP. Asked about the potential three-way bid, Victor Montagliani, FIFA VP and President of both the Canadian soccer federation and the CONCACAF region, said, "I also respect the fact that each country has the possibility to put on the World Cup [alone] and I think the discussions will happen quite soon as to what is our region is going to look like at this World Cup as I think it is an opportunity for CONCACAF."
The Colonial Athletic Association has a home for its 2017 CAA Men’s Basketball Championship. The conference locked in a deal with CBS Sports to have the title game carried live on CBS Sports Network at 7p on March 6. “The CAA is pleased to partner with CBS Sports Network to televise the Championship game of our 2017 Men’s Basketball Tournament,” CAA Commissioner Joe D’Antonio said. “We are excited to have the Conference’s signature event in 2017 aligned with the family of networks that has become synonymous with the NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Championship.”
Univision Deportes reports a strong 2016, noting that the multimedia sports division of Univision Communications delivered record ratings and double-digit growth in key metrics for its sports content across media platforms during the year. UDN registered year-over-year ratings gains for the fourth consecutive year with a boost of 33%, according to Nielsen, and averaged 124,000 Adults 18-49 in 2016.
The NFL today announced that Super Bowl Opening Night Fueled by Gatorade will showcase performances by X Ambassadors as well as an appearance by Pro Football Hall of Famer Warren Moon on Jan. 30 at 7p. The event marks the first time that players and coaches meet with thousands of media members at Minute Maid Park in Houston. The event will be carried live on NFL Network, ESPN2, and FS1. Fans in attendance will also enjoy special appearances and autographs by NFL Legends.
Speaking of football, Donald Yee, agent for New England Patriots QB Tom Brady, along with former Super Bowl champion wide receiver Ed McCaffrey and others are launching Pacific Pro Football, designed to serve as a career alternative to high school players in lieu of playing for a university. Pac Pro will look to utilize and pay players not eligible for other professional leagues with an average annual salary and benefits for each player is projected at $50,000. Pac Pro’s Advisory Board includes Super Bowl champion head coach Mike Shanahan, former NFL Senior VP and Super Bowl czar Jim Steeg, officiating expert Mike Pereira, and football reporter Adam Schefter. Steve Schmidt, MSNBC commentator and former lead campaign strategist for the McCain presidential campaign also joins the Advisory Board.
NBC Sports Group announced plans to carry 12 races during the upcoming 2017 Verizon IndyCar Series season, beginning with the Grand Prix of Long Beach on April 9 on NBCSN. Coverage will also feature IndyCar’s return to St. Louis and Gateway Motorsports Park on Aug. 26 as well as circuits such as Road America and Watkins Glen, and the final nine races of the 2017 campaign. Once again, the 2017 IndyCar championship will be decided on NBCSN.
Season 13 of ESPN’s College GameDay Covered by State Farm will open in Durham ahead of Duke/s contest with Miami on Jan. 21 The morning show begins at 11 a.m. on ESPN, followed by an evening edition leading into the game telecast at 8p.
SiriusXM announced that basketball analyst Greg Anthony is joining team for both of its 24/7 NBA and college sports channels. Anthony began yesterday as host of Above the Rim, with new episodes running Wednesdays at 10a on SiriusXM NBA Radio. Anthony will also have a regular hosting role on SiriusXM College Sports Nation starting later this month.

MVPIndex unveiled its Most Valued Athletes in Social Media of 2016 in partnership with 120 Sports, naming Seattle Seahawks Russell Wilson (No. 1), New York Giants Odell Beckham Jr. (No. 2) and the Houston Texans JJ Watt (No.3) at the top f the list. Overall, the NFL was featured throughout the top 25 with nine players on the list, while the NBA followed with five, led by LeBron James.
The Big East Conference announced March to MSG, a new multifaceted digital and experiential campaign counting down to the league’s 35th Basketball Tournament at Madison Square Garden from March 8-11. The campaign will run throughout the 2016-17 season, and encourages fans to celebrate the conference through multiple activations including a national social media contest as well as a 10-city championship trophy tour that will visit each school.
Updating Super Bowl spot news, Mercedes-Benz is back in the game, with the brand’s USA Marketing VP Drew Slaven confirming the deal with Ad Age. Meanwhile, Snickers announced that actor Adam Driver will appear in the its Super Bowl 2017 commercial as part of its ‘You’re Not You When You’re Hungry’ campaign. The new spot marks the third consecutive year the brand will advertise during the game.
For the first time in school history, Little Rock Athletics will outsource its comprehensive multimedia rights and sponsorship initiatives, inking a deal with Learfield as its partner for the next 10 years that will include the establishment of its Little Rock Trojan Sports Properties. This local team will be solely dedicated to representing the Trojans and managing all aspects of the rights agreement, which includes signage, digital, corporate sponsorships, television and radio play-by-play, and coaches’ shows.
The South American Football Confederation is turning to Sportradar in a move to prevent, detect and investigate any match manipulation that may occur. CONMEBOL will receive implementation of the company’s Fraud Detection System, use of the Fraud Intelligence Unit, and a roll out of the company’s Fraud Prevention Services.
