CYNOPSISDIGITAL
01.12.15 Good morning. It’s Monday, January 12, 2015, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.
To ramp up video streaming quality, Facebook bought QuickFire Networks on Friday. QFN is a technology that reduces the necessary bandwidth to view video online without affecting its quality. FB recently announced that video posts on the platform have increased 75 percent in the last year, and reach one billion video viewers per day around the world.
Cult film Wet Hot American Summer will officially make its comeback as a series on Netflix, according to Deadline. The show was greenlit for eight episodes, with the entire cast set to return, including Paul Rudd, Bradley Cooper, Amy Poehler, and Elizabeth Banks. Original writers David Wain and Michael Showalter will co-create the new series, with Wain directing once more.
…in more Netflix news: the Ricky Gervais original series Derek will return to Netflix in a one-hour special on April 3. Gervais was nominated for a Golden Globe for his character in the series, which follows a 50-year-old retirement home worker. The first two seasons of Derek are available to stream on Netflix.
WE tv launched the GIF Sync social experience with the premiere of the second season of Marriage Boot Camp Reality Stars on Friday. As part of the WE tv app, GIF Sync will release real-time GIFs, memes and a feed of show-related tweets during linear broadcasts of the network’s original series.
Netflix documentary Virunga snagged a nomination for a BAFTA film award. Orlando von Einsiedel directed the doc alongside executive producer Leonardo DiCaprio, which follows Virunga National Park rangers in the Democratic Republic of Congo as they try to protect mountain gorillas from poachers, warfare and other adversaries. The film is competing against 20 Feet from Stardom, 20,000 Days on Earth, CitizenFour and Finding Vivian Maier in the same category. Awards are given out on February 8.
Cinedigm and Wizard World’s upcoming geek streaming channel, Con TV, will enlist Bruce Campbell (The Evil Dead) to host the new game show Last Fan Standing. Campbell will visit Comic-Cons around the nation to quiz attendees for the chance to win prizes and the title of “Last Fan Standing.” Coverage started with the con in New Orleans on Jan. 10, but will launch after the network debuts in February. The channel also has plans for another original called Fight of the Living Dead, a zombie competition series featuring YouTube celebrities.
L’Oreal Paris set up a digital hub during the Golden Globes on Sunday, called a “shoppable social commerce center,” to recreate red carpet looks before the awards ceremony. Beauty influencers such as The Man Repeller, Melisa Michelle, Sam Cannon, Romain Laurent and a social team turned the video make-up tutorials into GIFs that were uploaded to L’Oreal Paris’ Twitter, Instagram and Tumblr pages with e-commerce links. L’Oreal also featured paid ads on Facebook and promoted tweets throughout the ceremony’s broadcast. During the 2014 awards show, L’Oreal launched its Tumblr page with the #LOrealParisLive campaign, which hit 80 percent control of beauty-related tweets, 21.8 million impressions and 234,000 engagements.

AD PLATFORMS
Yahoo pulled the plug on its Real Media Exchange platform on Friday. Yahoo acquired RMX in 2007 for $680 million, and will shut down the exchange for all non-Yahoo owned and operated networks and publishers.
Sorenson Media and real-time information service and analytics company Neustar announced a partnership to tap into TV audience viewing habits. “Neustar’s audience data will help our Spark Enlight product provide broadcasters and advertisers with detailed audience viewing insights in near real-time while assisting them in optimizing their programming to better cater to audience preferences,” Sorenson President and CEO Marcus Liassides said.
CES 2015
As previously reported, Twitter will launch its new video feature in the coming weeks, but the social network unveiled more details at the CES convention. Highlights include:
– Autoplay will look like Vine: the feature will allow marketers to create six-second video previews to entice users to click. However, marketers will have the choice to pick which six seconds of a video campaign will make the preview. In other words: choose the most enticing bit.
– Unlike Facebook, there will be no sound to start: Or at least not until a user clicks to watch the promoted tweet, and advertisers won’t pay until they receive a click.
– Time: Brands will have up to ten minutes of video to use. Users will only get 30 seconds every day.
RESEARCH
American adults are spending more time on social networks, according to a new study from the Pew Research Center released on Friday. The research showed 52 percent of web users regularly logged into at least two social networks, an increase from the 42 percent reported in Pew’s 2013 survey. Facebook captured 70 percent logging in at least once a day. Nearly half of Instagram users reported visiting the photo-sharing platform daily. Twitter had only 36 percent of the adult web population, down 10% from the 46 percent recorded in 2013. LinkedIn reported 13 percent visiting the site at least once a day. Additionally, the research found that two-thirds of Facebook users were not “actual” friends with their listed connections on the network, and less than half of users have added their parents or children as friends.
