IN THE NEWS
TNT and TBS will pivot to more unscripted content, AT&T COO and WarnerMedia Chairman John Stankey told investors on Wednesday. General entertainment content “will show up on HBO Max going forward,” said Stankey, while the cable nets will be more focused on sports and programming that sparks “water cooler” conversation. HBO Max will offer “something for everyone in the family,” said Stankey, with the highest-quality premium SVOD in the market delivering “a higher percentage of culturally relevant offerings.”
WarnerMedia’s revenues slipped 3% in the fourth quarter, to $8.9 billion, said AT&T in its earnings release, in part due to the loss of content license dollars ahead of HBO Max’s launch. “Without the impact of foreign exchange pressures and HBO Max investments in the form of foregone WarnerMedia content licensing revenues, consolidated revenues would have increased in both the fourth quarter and the full year,” said the company.
AT&T reported a loss of 945,000 premium video subscribers from DirecTV and U-Verse, and 219,000 from AT&T Now in the quarter, but the February launch of AT&T TV will change the video loss trend, said Stankey. “As we move through this year and we start shifting to AT&T TV, our gross add performance starts to get much stronger,” the COO told analysts. “When you’re able to put AT&T TV, a software-based product with fiber, it’s a much more natural combination than a satellite dish and fiber. And so, as we start to roll out AT&T TV now in markets and we move in, we’re going to see much stronger performance on the fiber side.”
There has been talk at NBC News about adding a fifth hour to Today, according to Variety. While there “are no imminent plans” for the move, said NBC News President Noah Oppenheim in an interview, if it happened, the show would likely add an hour at the end of the 7a-11a block rather than at the beginning.
SAG-AFTRA outlined new guidelines for “intimacy coordinators” who oversee sex scenes in films and TV shows, to address the problem of sexual harassment on sets. “This is a home run for our members and the entire industry,” said David White, the union’s national executive director. “Having intimacy coordinators on sets where simulated sex and other forms of intimacy are present better protects SAG-AFTRA members and all other professionals involved in such scenes.”
Bloomberg Television is now available to Verizon Fios TV customers, giving viewers in cities across the East Coast access to Bloomberg TV’s global business and finance news, analysis and commentary on channel 605.

Facebook 4Q19 revenue was $21.08 billion, beating Wall Street expectations of $20.8 billion, but shares slid 7% in after hours trading after the company reported a narrowing operating margin. Daily active users hit 1.66 billion in December, up 9% year-over-year, while monthly active users rose 8%, to 2.5 billion. “We had a good quarter and a strong end to the year as our community and business continue to grow,” said Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg. “We remain focused on building services that help people stay connected to those they care about.”
STREAMING SNIPPETS
Mobile video viewing in India is growing fast, according a new study from software company Penthera, but almost half of viewers experience a delay of 5 seconds or more after they hit the play button. While 88% of users in India stream mobile video at least weekly, 93% say they experience streaming frustrations when they watch, including the video taking too long to start, the video re-buffering, and the advertisements being annoying. Eighty percent say they expect a service to offer downloading capabilities and 84% would pay extra for the feature. “While the competition for eyes in India is intense, OTT providers can position themselves at the top of the pack by providing a user friendly feature such as mobile downloading,” says the report. “Even better, offering download functionality to their viewers can pay for itself in monetized ads, increased subscription costs, and a decrease of churn.”
Netflix’s The Witcher and Disney+’s The Mandalorian top the list of streaming debuts for 4Q19, but Apple TV+ held six of the top ten spots, reports Parrot Analytics. Apple TV+ Originals delivered strong audience demand, with its sixth best-performing debut series, The Morning Show, showing 16.5x more demand over its 30 day premiere period than the average TV series with US audiences. For more, go here.
Netflix is reportedly planning to tweak its marketing strategy to include more marketing of its brand, in addition to individual titles, according to the Hollywood Reporter, a change that could result in at least 15 layoffs. The streamer employs about 6900 people.
OTT revenue will top $200 billion by 2024, projects ABI Research, boosted by new streaming services, aggressive pricing and packaging and continued expansion. And the shift to OTT will create opportunities for the traditional pay-TV business. “Cord-cutting is often regarded as a consequence of expanding OTT consumption, but the market dynamics are more complex, particularly when one considers how the pay-TV industry has embraced OTT as a complement and value-additive, rather than strict competition,” said Michael Inouye, Principal Analyst at ABI Research. “Over time, we expect the traditional pay-TV offer to continue to evolve and become indistinguishable from a pure OTT package of services.”
