Short-form video app Byte, successor to Vine, made a surprise launch on iOS and Android on Friday. Vine co-creator Dom Hofmann had been developing the app (originally named V2) for two years; users can shoot or upload, then share six-second videos. Twitter shuttered Vine in January 2017.

Privacy is still a major issue for users of voice control, according to “The Case for Voice Control”, a study from Hub that revealed concerns about privacy and security are a significant roadblock to both wider use of voice control for sensitive topics, and ownership of smart speakers. Among those who don’t yet have a smart speaker and don’t intend to buy one, two thirds (66%) say that privacy concerns are an important reason for not buying; among existing users, 59% of those who regularly use voice control have concerns about privacy. Almost all users of voice control with privacy concerns cite worries about unwanted listening by speakers (91%) and concerns about what data is being collected about users (90%). “This new report shows just how pervasive voice control is, and how quickly consumers have embraced it, even if they have major privacy concerns,” says David Tice, senior consultant to Hub and co-author of the study. “These privacy issues may be a key reason why ‘retail’ uses (e.g., shopping, financial) lag well behind other activities like entertainment on smart speakers.”

Ampersand, the data-driven TV advertising sales and technology company, announced the launch of The AND Platform, a TV ad planning, buying and measurement platform for audience-based TV advertising with reach across 85 million households, 120 cable networks and more than 55 percent of all addressable households. TV measurement and analytics firm 605 announced that Audience App, built for Charter Communications, has achieved service organization control 3 (“SOC 3”) compliance. Audience App uses anonymized and aggregated subscriber viewing data, combined with third-party consumer data, to target specific consumer attributes. An independent SOC 3 audit and review performed by KPMG LLP determined that the Company met “trust services principles” established by the AICPA related to security, availability, confidentiality and processing integrity with respect to Charter’s proprietary information, including its set-top box viewing data. Successful certification of SOC3 recognizes 605’s methodology and protocol for software development, system performance, and customer support expertise.

Shipments of smart devices, including PCs, notebooks, personal audio devices, smart speakers, smartphones, tablets and wearable bands, will hit 3 billion in 2023, projects Canalys. Smartphones are expected to make up over half of shipments, while the fastest-growing category will be smart personal audio.

Britain introduced comprehensive new rules requiring social networks and other online services used by people under 18 to change their handling of young users’ personal information. The rules are significantly stricter than those in the US, aimed at children under 13. “While we support the code’s ambition, we do have real reservations,” Antony Walker, the deputy chief executive of techUK, an industry group that represents companies including Amazon, Facebook and Google, warning the code “could lead to some unnecessary age-gating of online services.”

DoubleVerify, a software platform for digital media measurement, data and analytics, announced a connected TV Targeting Certification for programmatic platforms, designed to protect advertisers from fraud and invalid traffic in the CTV space. “DV has developed the most comprehensive and accurate CTV fraud identification in the industry, identifying millions of devices and hundreds of applications as invalid,” said Matt McLaughlin, COO of DoubleVerify. “DV’s CTV Targeting Certification gives advertisers confidence that their CTV investment is protected when buying through the market-leading platforms that have successfully completed this certification.” In order to be certified by DV for CTV Targeting, a platform must demonstrate the ability to prevent fraud and IVT by applying DV’s pre-bid app and device fraud protection for CTV inventory transactions.

The firm also announced that Centerfield has acquired Digital Ventures, which operates web sites in home security, residential services, senior services and other verticals. Centerfield’s digital assets and platform, Dugout, engage in-market consumers and automate end-to-end customer acquisition shopping experiences. Founded in 2011, Centerfield has more than 1,000 employees across seven offices serving brands in residential services, telecommunications, business services, education and other verticals. “Digital Ventures has built an impressive digital marketing business reaching millions of customers in competitive industries,” said Centerfield co-founder and CEO, Jason Cohen. “We are thrilled to have the team join Centerfield and believe this acquisition is a blueprint for us to expand in both new and existing verticals.”

IN MEMORIAM

Leila Janah, CEO and founder of learning training data company Samasource, and an advocate for diversity and altruism, died of complications of Epithelioid Sarcoma.
