PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT
 
WE tv added 10 more episodes to season two of Love After Lockup, for a total of 24. The show was the fastest-growing new cable reality series in 2018, said the net. Seven episodes into the second season, Lockup delivered a series high of more than 1.3 million total viewers in Live+3, double the season premiere viewership and a series high 762,000 A25-54, up 88% percent from the season premiere.
 
Shopify has launched Shopify Studios, a full-service TV and film content development and production house that will develop, produce and finance an array of projects for streaming platforms and traditional networks. The company has so far set deals with Anonymous Content, Spoke Studios and Saville Productions to develop entrepreneur-focused docu-series and feature-length documentaries
 
Flip or Flop’s Tarek El Moussa will star in the pilot for a new HGTV show in 2019. The show, currently in production, teams El Moussa with real-estate novices as they learn the secrets of a successful flip. “From start to finish, I’m giving these first-time flippers everything they need to score a profitable deal and not a bank-breaking flop,” said El Moussa, who will also star in a new digital series for HGTV.com that follows his new life as a single dad.

Fuse has three documentaries making their U.S. TV premieres as part of its Fuse Docs series. Fatherhood, following young people as they write and perform songs that address healing, debuts Saturday, March 2; Sickboy, about three friends who team up to create a podcast that laughs in the face of serious illness, premieres Saturday, April 6; and I Used to Be Normal: A Boyband Fangirl Story arrives Saturday, May 18.
 
Hallmark Channel staple Candace Cameron Bure and her daughter, Natasha Bure, will host the Movieguide Awards, honoring movies and TV shows for family audiences, reports Variety. Ceremony takes place February 8 in Hollywood and will air later in the month on Hallmark Channel.
 
History’s Presidents at War tells the stories of the experiences of eight presidents who served on active duty during World War II. Two-part event series launches Sunday, February 17, at 8p.
 
Documentary Studio 54 premieres on A&E on Monday, February 11, at 10p. The film about the notorious celeb-packed club includes newly discovered footage.
 
Smithsonian Channel is taking a deeper look into the story of “The Negro Motorist Green Book,” told in the Oscar-nominated film Green Book. The Green Book: Guide to Freedom features experts delving into phenomena of “traveling while black” in pre-civil rights America, on Monday, February 25, at 8p.
 
Octane Entertainment sold bank heist caper Carter & June to Showtime Networks, which will offer the film on demand February 1. It will also air as part of premium programming beginning February 7.
 
 
DIGITAL DATA
 
YouTube TV is rolling out in another 95 markets, to cover 98% of the U.S. For the past year, the service has been available in about 85% of households. YouTube TV offers access to ABC, CBS, Fox and NBC in 90% of the areas it serves, in addition to cable nets.
 
Ninety percent of consumers are either interested or very interested in using a live over-the-air TV service like Next-Gen ATSC 3.0, according to a study commissioned by the Phoenix Model Market project partners and the Pearl TV broadcast business group, conducted by Magid. Among the findings: Respondents said that the capabilities could make them start watching broadcast programming even if they don’t currently do so or make them want to watch broadcast TV more than they currently do. “The consumer sentiment that we heard and felt most during the lab testing was excitement about ATSC 3.0 capabilities and a high overall level of interest in engaging with those capabilities and services through their local broadcasters,” said Bill Hague, EVP, Magid.
 
Sports and entertainment media brand Whistle acquired digital entertainment studio New Form, launched in 2014 with backing from Ron Howard, Brian Grazer and Discovery, among others. “It was a great match from the start. Both companies excel at discovering emerging narratives and storytelling,” said John West, Whistle’s CEO and founder.
 
Hulu is raising the price for its skinny bundle live TV service to $44.99/month, from $39.99, but lowering the price of its SVOD service from $7.99 to $5.99. The news comes after Netflix’s recent announcement that it is raising the price for its most popular plan from $10.99/month to $12.99.
 
Univision launched new local apps in LA, New York, Miami, Houston, Dallas, Chicago and the San Francisco Bay area. The launch of the new apps is “the direct result of our re-investment as a company into our local stations across the country, allowing us to elevate the ways in which our viewers can engage with us and stay connected to the news they need the most,” said Chris Peña, SVP of news for local media.
 
Sportradar and Arkadium announced a multiyear exclusive partnership marrying Sportradar’s worldwide real-time sports data with Arkadium’s interactive AI product, InHabit, to deliver AI-powered visualizations of sports data. “The way in which sports fans are consuming content has dramatically changed and fans are looking for more interactive visual stories to help keep them informed of the latest sports news,” said Jonathan Earle, Customer Director, Sports Media, Sportradar. “Partnering with Arkadium will help us to lead the next generation of sports engagement.”
 
DCD Rights inked a deal with BritBox, the streaming service from BBC Studios and ITV, available in the U.S. and Canada, for Britbox to run all 27 seasons of the detective drama Taggart.
 
Netflix acquired global rights to Middle Eastern legal drama Justice, produced by Image Nation and Beelink Productions. It’s Netflix’s first series from the UAE.
 
Sony Crackle grabbed exclusive streaming rights to To Win It All: The Road to The Six Invitational. Esports documentary debuts Friday, January 25, leading up to the February 16 Six Invitational in Montreal.
 
 
ADVERTISING
 
Total U.S. ad spend in 2018 topped $151 billion, up 4.1% from the prior year, according to Kantar Media. P&G remained the top advertiser, increasing spend by 4.7% to $2.88 billion, while AT&T came in second, down 6.1% to $2.21 billion. Amazon.com grew its spend by a whopping 72.5%, to 1.84 billion. Retail was the top ad category, followed by automotive and telecom.
 
Videa announced the addition of Comscore TV data, giving media buyers and sellers with Videa and Comscore subscriptions access to Comscore campaign measurement insights within the Videa platform. The integration is designed to allow media buyers to reach audiences across stations and help local broadcasters value their inventories.  
 
WideOrbit and Mediaocean are partnering to automate the buying and selling of local broadcast ad spots, collaborating to improve processes and develop integrations that eliminate tasks that can make local TV buying too costly and inefficient for national media buying agencies. WideOrbit’s WO Traffic is used by broadcast station groups to manage more than 90% of U.S. local TV ad revenue, while Mediaocean provides the foundational software for agencies and advertisers buying traditional and digital media.
 
Rita Ora’s song “Soul Survivor” will accompany Bumble’s first-ever Super Bowl commercial. The spot features the women-first social networking app’s Global Advisor, Serena Williams.

Gillette sales following its #MeToo ad are “in line with pre-campaign levels,” said P&G CFO Jon Moeller on a press call Wednesday. The online ad drew backlash in some quarters for showing scenes of bullying and catcalls and asking, “Is this the best a man can get?” – but also received unprecedented levels of media coverage and customer engagement, said Moeller, and was “part of our effort to connect more meaningfully with younger consumer groups.”

Barcroft Media announced broadcast sales for linear versions of brands in deals brokered by ITV Studios Global Entertainment. Barcroft Media and ITVS GE have collaborated on producing four new long-form series featuring content edited from Ridiculous Rides, Hooked on the Look, Born Different and Beast Buddies short form series featured on Barcroft’s digital channels.
 
Kew Media Distribution has signed deals in Latin America with DirectTV, Sundance TV and Globosat for more than 104 hours of programming, including feature film Painkillers, feature documentary Harry and Meghan: A Very Modern Romance and season five of drama series Line of Duty.
 
Outdoor Sportsman Group Networks launched Sportsman Channel in Canada. “Outdoor Sportsman Group is extremely excited to welcome our neighbors to the north with programming that encapsulates the heritage and traditions of the Canadian people,” said Jim Liberatore, President of Outdoor Group Media.

RATINGS
 
Hallmark Channel original movie premieres, A Winter Princess and Winter Love Story, on Friday and Saturday, part of the net’s annual “Winterfest” programming event, propelled the network to be the highest-rated and most-watched non-news cable network for the week during Prime Time among Households and Total Viewers. Princess averaged a 2.0 HH rating, 2.0 million Total Viewers and 295,000 W25-54, while Love Story averaged a 2.7 HH rating, 2.7 million Total Viewers and 415,000 W25-54.
 
The season premiere of Telemundo’s Exatlon delivered an average 319,000 viewers A18-34, according to Nielsen. In addition, the show outperformed the premiere of the first season by 42% among A18-49.
 
The season finale of ABC’s The Conners rose 15% week to week to hit a 1.5/7 among A18-49, its most-watched telecast since October, with 9.4 million total viewers.
 
On its fourth episode of the season, Freeform’s grown-ish jumped 38% week to week among A18-34 (to 308,000) for a new season high and posted a new season best among W18-34, up 27% (to 232,000).
 
Saturday night, Univision’s back-to-back Liga MX soccer matches – America vs. Pachuca and Tigres UANL vs. Cruz Azul – attracted more Total Viewers 2+ (+18% to 1.0 million), A18-49 (+16% to 512,000) and A18-34 (+19% to 210,000) than the prior Saturday’s Liga MX matchups. 
 
It was a Golden (Globes) week in syndication the week ending January 13 for Access (new season high 1.4 in Live+SD, up 17% from the prior week), TMZ (1.3, up 8%), Entertainment Tonight (3.2, up 14%) and Inside Edition (up 15% to 3.1).
 
Completing its two-week trial run was Breakthrough with Dr. Steve Perry (0.4/1 weighted metered market two-week average), down 50% from both lead-ins and year-ago time periods.

He was an incredibly funny, wildly talented man who had so much more to do and so many more stories to tell. We send our thoughts and prayers to his friends and family during this difficult time,” said Fox Entertainment in a statement.
