IN THE NEWS
Ricky Gervais landed both laughs and groans as host of Sunday’s Golden Globe Awards, where the A-listers in the room were, as usual, his prime targets. Encouraging winners to just thank their agents and God, Gervais noted, “You’re in no position to lecture the public about anything…most of you spent less time in school than Greta Thunberg.” That didn’t keep presenter Jennifer Aniston from reading a speech from Best Actor/Miniseries winner Russell Crowe (The Loudest Voice), who was in his home country, Australia, as wildfires raged, that urged climate change action based on science. For a complete list of winners, go here.
A newly unsealed PBS investigative report related to lawsuits over the dismissal of Tavis Smiley accuses the former talk show host of engaging in sexual relationships with subordinates and guests, verbal abuse and unwanted sexual comments. Smiley, who hosted Tavis Smiley for 14 years, denies the allegations. Smiley sued PBS for breach of contract when his show was canceled amid misconduct allegations; in a countersuit, PBS is asking for the return of $1.9 million in production advances. A trial is scheduled for February 10.
The Directors Guild of America sent an email to members informing them that the submission for Jill Soloway for Transparent Musical Finale was “inadvertently omitted” from the ballot. Currently in beta, AT&T TV is scheduled to roll out nationally next month.
TechFreedom is siding with Facebook on a ruling that allows Illinois residents to bring a class-action suit against the social media giant over its facial recognition technology. The court’s decision could “discourage innovative newcomers and dampen the relentless cycle by which past internet giants have seen their dominance disrupted,” said libertarian group TechFreedom in a friend-of-the-court brief filed Friday, supporting Facebook’s request that the Supreme Court intervene. The Illinois Biometric Information Privacy Act requires companies to obtain a written release before collecting face mapping data; Facebook says charges should be dismissed since Illinois residents suffered no injury from the alleged violation.
