Netflix has canceled “1899,” the mystery thriller from “Dark” creators Jantje Friese and Baran bo Odar, after one season. “We would have loved to finish this incredible journey with a 2nd and 3rd season as we did with ‘Dark’. But sometimes things don’t turn out the way you planned,” posted the German filmmakers on Instagram.

Banning TikTok is a “natural next step in our efforts to secure communication networks,” FCC commissioner Brendan Carr told India’s Economic Times. Carr explained that his concern is that China could use data from the app for the purposes of “blackmail, espionage, foreign influence campaigns and surveillance.” Carr’s preaching to the choir – India banned TikTok in 2020.

Jeremy Renner (“The Mayor of Kingstown”) is in “critical but stable” condition after a weather-related New Year’s Day accident that occurred while the actor was plowing snow. Renner was the only person involved in the accident.

Fidelity funds cut the value of their Twitter stake by 56%, to $8.63 million as of November. Fidelity was one of the outside investors that helped Elon Musk finance the $44 billion takeover of Twitter. While economic trends that have slammed tech stocks are partly to blame, Musk’s chaotic reign and advertiser flight has contributed to the steep drop.

Meta has acquired Netherlands-based Luxexcel. The smart eyewear company, founded in 2009 as a prescription lens manufacturer, has since moved on to the metaverse with AR products, and is expected to help Meta achieve its goal of building AR glasses.

Season five of Paramount’s “Yellowstone” will return in summer 2023. The hit drama’s mid-season finale aired January 1.

PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

The percentage of filmmakers from underrepresented ethnic groups who were among the directors of the top 100 highest-grossing films at the box office in 2022 was 20.7% in 2022, according to the USC Annenberg Inclusion Initiative. That’s down from a 15-year high of 27.3% in 2021. Female directors accounted for 9% among the top 100, down from 12.7% in 2021 but better than the 2.7% counted in 2007. “Industry advocates have made claims regarding their support for women – funding programs and fellowships, adding women to consideration lists for open jobs,” wrote Dr. Stacy L. Smith, founder of the Annenberg Inclusion Initiative. “Yet at the point when support matters most – hiring – there are still barriers that prevent women from working on the top movies released each year.”

Jeb Stuart (“Vikings: Valhalla”) is no longer showrunner of Netflix’s live-action adaptation of the “Assassin’s Creed” video game. The reason for the parting is a “difference in vision,” Stuart told Collider. “I think it was a little bit of a move of executives from LA to London, and it allowed the London group who, unfortunately, had to inherit my vision of what it was instead of getting to develop their own vision,” said Stuart of the project. “I think that’s fair. I know it’s going to be great whenever it comes out.”

SPORTS ROUNDUP

ESPN’s telecast of the Peach Bowl averaged 22.1 million viewers, according to Nielsen fast nationals, making it the most-watched College Football Playoff semifinal in five years. The afternoon’s Fiesta Bowl averaged 21.4 million viewers, the best since 2018.

Martina Navratilova has been diagnosed with Stage 1 throat cancer and Stage 1 breast cancer. The tennis great – who beat breast cancer in 2010 – had been scheduled to serve as an analyst for the Tennis Channel’s coverage of the Australian Open, which begins January 15. Navratilova instead hopes to make video appearances. “This double whammy is serious but still fixable,” said Navratilova. “I’m hoping for a favorable outcome. It’s going to stink for a while, but I’ll fight with all have I got.”

The National Hockey League announced details for the 2024 Discover NHL Winter Classic®. The outdoor contest will feature the Seattle Kraken hosting the Vegas Golden Knights on Monday, January 1, 2024, at T-Mobile Park, home of the Seattle Mariners, and will be broadcast on TNT in the US and on Sportsnet and TVA Sports in Canada. In addition, Discover Financial Services and the NHL announced a multiyear extension of their US partnership that includes Discover maintaining its status as the Official Credit Card and Official Bank of the NHL® in the U.S.

LOOKING AHEAD

2023 will be the year of community, predicts Miheer Walavalkar, Co-Founder and CEO, LiveLike. “Entertainment and sports streamers (as well as publishers and other companies) will significantly increase their investments in engagement, in order to focus on what sets their brand or content apart; lower churn by giving users incentive to stay; and find creative ways to monetize fandom through consumer loyalty,” said Walavalkar. “They will do this by tapping into innovative tech that will ultimately enable the industry to finally move from Web2 to Web3.”

Streaming is the new local, contends Kevin Krim, CEO of EDO. “At least one major brand is going to shift the majority of their local and/or scatter TV ad buy to targeted streaming. Pressured by a shaky economy, somebody’s going to make the leap and try something dramatic so that will inevitably catch headlines, drive ROI, and maybe even win some awards,” Krim predicts. “So while dollars may shift, this will be a win for the already innovative media players who can see where the puck is going, and are making the investments to enhance the streaming platforms we all know and love.”

Live sports are the future of streaming, according to Tal Chalozin, CTO & Co-Founder of Innovid. “Not only will streaming viewership in live sports be at an all-time high in the new year, but the environment boasts a myriad of ways in which to engage viewers,” noted Chalozin. “Think of personalization and advanced formats like interactive creative. Not to mention measurement insights and the ability for optimization. The opportunity for advertisers here is massive and savvy marketers will consider the streaming offerings available when developing live sports campaigns in 2023.”

“Today, more than ever, visuals and images are the key to consumer brand engagement and relevance,” said Laia Pescetto, VP of Global Marketing at Telmar & Helixa. “In the near future, we’ll see an innovation revolution in the development of visuals and images that is aligned with how a brand’s target audience(s) accesses and processes brand information in the digital world.”
