Good morning. It’s Monday, May 17, 2010, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.
Cartoon Network will premiere its first live-action mystery series, Unnatural History (13×60), on June 13 at 8p. Produced by Warner Horizon Television, Executive Producer/creator Mike Werb (The Mask, Face/Off) wrote the pilot episode, which was directed by Mikael Salomon (Band of Brothers, The Andromeda Strain). Thania St. John (Eureka, Drop Dead Diva) also serves as Exec. Producer. The series will air regularly on the network Sundays at 8p. Unnatural History follows the adventures of Henry Griffin, a smart and clever teen that has been traveling the world with his anthropologist parents, who is sent to live with his uncle in Washington D.C. and attend school with his cousin Jasper. Together Henry, Jasper and their friend Maggie solve new mysteries at the school, which is housed on the grounds of The National Museum Complex, each episode. ( www.cartoonnetwork.com/tv_shows/unnaturalhistory/index.html ).
Technicolor continues its corporate re-branding initiative by re-naming its newly acquired India-based Paprikaas animation and visual effects studio as Technicolor India. Among its range of productions and relationships, Technicolor India is currently producing Nickelodeon’s new animated TV series Kung Fu Panda (26 episodes), and also produces the network’s CGI animated series Penguins of Madagascar. Both series are based on DreamWorks Animation movies.
NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT
2 x 20,000. There are two new movie adaptations of Jules Verne’s 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea in the works, per THR. First, Disney has signed director David Fincher (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, Fight Club) to helm its much-discussed version, with a script by writer Scott Z. Burns (Bourne Ultimatum). At one point the Disney adaptation was to going to be directed by McG. Then came news that Fox is readying a version with Ridley and Tony Scott, and their Scott Free Productions, developing the movie featuring a script by Travis Beacham (co-writer of Clash of the Titans), and discussions reportedly under way with director Timur Bekmambetov (Wanted). There have been several movie versions of 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea over the years, with the most well known version likely being Disney’s 1954 version directed by Richard Fleischer starring Kirk Douglas (as Ned Land) and James Mason (Captain Nemo), Paul Lukas (Prof. Pierre Aronnax), and Peter Lorre (Conseil) – or at least that is the one that I remember best.

Under the deal Imira will represent the new series Dance Academy (52×26) in Iberia, Latin America and for US Hispanic markets, along with the new TV movie Stella & the Orient Star (1×90). Imira already represents ZDF’s live-action series H20 Just Add Water and The Elephant Princess in Spanish-language markets and Portugal. Imira will feature both new properties this month at LA Screenings, along with new animated series Cj the DJ (52×11) aimed at K6-12 from Millimages, the preschool series Fun with Claude (52×12) from ZDF Enterprises, and The Happets (57×7) from Anera Films. Imira’s slate will also showcase animated properties including Saari (93×3), Sandra, the Fairytale Detective (52×13), new episodes of 64 Zoo Lane (26×11) from Millimages, Tangerine and Cow from Normaal Animation, and Bali (52×13) from Planet Nemo, and Louie (39×26) also from Millimages.
- Targeted to tweens/teens, Dance Academy is a drama that revolves around Tara (15), who grew up on a farm in Australia wanting nothing more than to be a dancer. When she is accepted to the best dance school in the country, Tara knows her life is about to change. What she doesn’t know is that there is a lot of hard work ahead because she is behind in her dance training – and that dancing isn’t the only thing she has to deal with to make it at the academy. Dance Academy is produced by Werner Films Production, co-producer of H20 Just Add Water.
- Stella & the Orient Star follows the adventures of Stella (10) as she travel via a magic wardrobe back to the early 20the century. Once there she must find the Star of the Orient, a special stone, and ward off criminals that want the treasure as well.
