04/03/14: Amazon officially entered the over-the-top TV competition

Amazon officially entered the over-the-top TV competition alongside Roku, Google and Apple yesterday with its own web-streaming device called the Fire TV. Priced at $99, the device will feature Amazon Instant Video and Prime Instant Video, Netflix, Hulu Plus, and apps like Watch ESPN, Showtime Anytime, Pandora and Vevo. Fire TV also includes voice recognition capabilities, a recommendation service called ASAP, a blue-tooth remote and a 30-day Prime Instant account trial. Amazon most recently struck deals for exclusive streaming of past seasons of Fox‘s 24 and CBS‘s Under the Dome.


AwesomenessTV acquired YouTube multi-channel network Big Frame for $15 million yesterday. Big Frame has more than 300 talent-run channels, 39 million YT subscribers and 3.4 billion views, which will translate to 80 million subscribers and a billion views a month for both the companies.

Boardwalk Empire star Steve Buscemi sold his reality web series Park Bench to AOL; it’s expected to premiere in mid May. The series will have a similar feel to Jerry Seinfeld‘s Crackle hit Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee, with Buscemi talking to celebrities and everyday folks sitting on benches across New York City. AOL will formally present the new series at its NewFront event on April 29.

Hulu Kids just launched BRB Internacional‘s animated series Canimals, which joins other titles from the BRB factory including Bernard, Suckers and Angus&Cheryl, also available on the streaming service. Co-produced by Aardman, VoozClub and Screen 21, the series of 7-minute eps combines animation and live-action images to tell the adventures of curious little characters in the shape of tin cans.

Oznoz, which provides content for bilingual kids online at Oznoz.com and via the Oznoz app, now has a HIT on its hands. A new deal with HIT Entertainment brings a library of preschool content including Thomas & Friends, Angelina Ballerina, Barney & Friends, Bob the Builder, Kipper and Rubbadubbers to kids in the U.S. and Canada in Mandarin, Arabic, Hindi, German, Russian and Korean languages. The deal marks the first time HIT’s content library will be available in these languages in North America.


Hulu announced a deal with NBC Universal Television and New Media Distribution to exclusively offer The Mindy Project and Brooklyn Nine-Nine for Hulu Plus subscribers. Additionally, Hulu will begin exclusively streaming past seasons of Bravo‘s Real Housewives franchise, Top Chef, Top Chef Masters, The Millionaire Matchmaker, Flipping Out, and E!‘s Keeping up with the Kardashians. Full prior episodes of Parks and Recreation will also be available, non-exclusively.

Animal Planet is introducing a slate of web series:

  • Tanked Aftershow: A show that catches up with Tanked’s Wayde King and Brett Raymer and their behind the scenes stories. The show will be comprised of ten episodes, with a new ep released every Friday after Tanked airs.
  • How Do You Like Meow: After the end of each ep of My Cat From Hell on AnimalPlanet.com/MyCatFromHell, the series will follow up on the featured show’s cat to see if they have reformed their ways, post rehab. The show premieres April 26, and will feature 12 episodes.
  • How to Catch a River Monster: The show returns on April 6 for its fifth season at AnimalPlanet.com/RiverMonsters.

Netflix acquired original series Narcos; it will debut in early 2015. Consisting of ten episodes, Narcos follows one of the world’s most dangerous trafficking organizations, in Brazil.

YouTube music partner Rumblefish surged past one billion monthly views. Rumblefish is a music catalog that offers copyright-cleared songs for online and YT videos.

Sony entertainment network Crackle is now available on Google‘s Chromecast dongle device. The Chromecast recently added video services VUDU, PlayOn and web radio service Rdio.


Online gaming publisher Spil Games debuted a new digital video ad solution to help advertisers take advantage of engaged moments with gamers to run video ads. The solution showed a 90 percent view-through rate when ads were served during "cliff-hangers". Spil Games has 200 million monthly active users through its sites GirlsgoGames.com, agame.com and gamesgames.com.


Twitter signed a five-year deal with research firm Kantar to further collaborate on advertising effectiveness, consumer insight, media measurement and customer satisfaction. The companies inked a deal in August 2013 to develop tools to assess the mix of social media and broadcast programming.


Tremor Video hired Christine Kubisztal as Director of Enterprise Sales of the Midwest and Kevin Blaine as Director of Enterprise Sales of the West Coast. Previously, Kubisztal was VP of Strategic Accounts at Visible Measures, and Blaine was served in sales at AOL.

MediaMath appointed Dave Reed as Managing Director for EMEA. Reed has been with MediaMath for six years; where he was previously SVP Strategic Solutions.

Multi-platform marketing solution for fashion and beauty brands StyleHaul (with 53 million MUA on its YouTube network) hired Mia Goldwyn as Chief Content Officer. Most recently, Goldwyn was President of Business Development of Digital and Insurge at Paramount Pictures.
