Cynopsis: Kids!

09/08/10

Good morning. It’s Wednesday, September 8, 2010, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

HIT Entertainment and Corus Entertainment’s Nelvana Studio are partnering to produce the new CG animated preschool series Mike the Knight (52×12). Created by Alexander Bar (Lunar Jim) and penned by Marc Seal (head writer/Bob the Builder), Mike the Knight is set in medieval land of Glendragon and follows the adventures of Mike as he folds medieval times into the lives of modern preschoolers.  Mike the Knight has begun production and will deliver in fall 2011.  The series is currently set to air on the Treehouse (Canada) and has been pre-sold to broadcasters worldwide with further deals to come. Nelvana Enterprises will represent Mike the Knight in broadcast and home entertainment in Latin America and France as well as broadcast in the US, while HIT Entertainment will handle the series in all other territories globally.  Animated in Toronto, at Nelvana Studio, Mike the Knight will be executive produced by HIT’s Chris Rose, VP/New Content Development and Marion Edwards, VP/Current Content; Corus Kids’ Jocelyn Hamilton, VP/Programming and Production and Irene Weibel, VP/International Development; Jamie Piekarz, Director/Content, Treehouse; Tracey Dodokin, Supervising Producer/Nelvana Studio; and Jackie Edwards, Content & Acquisitions Manager/CBeebies.

DreamWorks Animation is partnering with NBC for two new half-hour animated holiday specials, Scared Shrekless and Kung Fu Panda Holiday Special, based on DreamWorks’ Shrek and Kung Fu Panda movie franchises respectively.  NBC has slated the Halloween-themed Scared Shrekless to premiere on Thursday, October 28 at 8p, while, Kung Fu Panda Holiday Special is scheduled to bow Wednesday, November 24 at 8:30p.  These new specials build NBC and DreamWorks Animation’s existing relationship, which produced last year’s holiday specials Monsters vs. Aliens: Mutant Pumpkins From Outer Space and Merry Madagascar.  NBC will re-air Monsters vs. Aliens: Mutant Pumpkins from Outer Space on Saturday, October 30 at 8:30p, and Merry Madagascar on both November 24 at 8p and Saturday, December 4 at 8p.  Finally, DreamWorks Animation will release both new holiday TV specials for the home entertainment market in 2011.

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Michael Caine is close to a deal star alongside Dwayne Johnson and Josh Hutcherson in New Line‘s movie Journey 2: the Mysterious Island, per Heat Vision.  Directed by Brad Peyton, the feature film is loosely based on Jules Verne’s The Mysterious Island.  The movie is a sequel to the studio’s Journey to the Center of the Earth 3D (2008).

Liam Neeson joins the cast of Universal‘s movie adaptation of Hasbro‘s board game Battleship, per Variety.  Directed by Peter Berg, Neeson will play Admiral Shane.  Slated for release on May 12, 2012, Battleship also stars Taylor Kitsch, Alexander Skarsgard, Brooklyn Decker, Rihanna and Hamish Linklater.
