Google and Apple have both set their sites on monetizing the connected TV space ­ in fact Google CEO Eric Schmidt announced plans in Berlin yesterday to launch the Google TV platform globally next year after a fall U.S. launch. But both are going to get some competition from a long-established player. Set top IPG technology giant Rovi (formerly known as Macrovision), which launched an iTV-based ad network for its guide customers and third party TV platforms in June, is announcing a new cloud-based ad service to allow various connected device manufacturers to join the party. The company is hoping to leverage its experience in the cable set-top-based ad space and extend the reach of its current network – now in about 15.8 million homes. Because it is web based, over-the-top set-top boxes, Blu-ray players, gaming consoles or TV widget platforms can now be connected to Rovi’s ad network regardless of its IPG software, with the company providing streamlined integration, campaign management, ad trafficking and full metrics. “Living room display ads,” as Rovi calls them, are optimized for larger screen viewing and interaction via a remote. Ads typically lead to a secondary screen where viewers can access more content, request info., set program reminders or integrate with social networks.
 

~ MULTIPLATFORM CONTENT NEWS ~

 
As part of its new strategy to leverage known entertainment entities to drum up more traffic, AOL is partnering with Telepictures Productions to share content, traffic and promotions with The Ellen DeGeneres Show. Video clips from Ellen’s show will be distributed across the AOL video network and the two companies will collaborate on various editorial and sales packages around holidays and special events. Look for a generous heaping of social media initiatives as well – among celebrities, TheEllenShow ranks behind only Britney Spears and Ashton Kutcher and in terms of Twitter followers (5.17 million and counting).
 
Bellevue, WA-based kiosk DVD rental service Redbox announced its one-billionth movie rental and is giving away various prizes to celebrate. The company recently added Blu-ray titles to its kiosks and is now up to more than 24,000 machines across the U.S.
 
Warner Bros. Television Group, producers of the NBC show Chuck, is giving TheWB.com and a handful of Chuck fan sites first dibs to the 5-episode digital series, Chuck Presents – Buy Hard: The Jeff and Lester Story. The plot revolves around Jeff and Lester’s quest to get a copy of the new Halo console game. Microsoft, which releases the third incarnation of Halo on Sept. 14, has also negotiated to feature the show on Xbox.com/halo and Xbox Live shortly following its debut on TheWB.com.
 
Grupo Televisa and Univision join venture TuTv announced its networks Bandamax and Ritmoson Latino have been added to the AT&T U-verseTV lineup nationwide as part of its Paquete Español package.
 

~ INNOVATORS & START-UPS ~

 
Male-targeted multiplatform programmer Rightnetwork (tagline: “All that’s Right with the World,”) signed a VOD agreement with Verizon FiOS TV, its first major distribution deal. Ten hours of original shows per month such as the sitcom Moving Numbers and the politically-themed documentary Running will be featured in the FiOS TV People and Cultures folder.
 
Seattle-based Wiki generation site Wetpaint is getting into the TV blog business launching a series of 15 female-focused “channels,” each dedicated to a buzz worthy show including The Vampire Diaries, Glee, Hellcats and Nikita. Each blog aggregates posts from networks, message boards and blogs including TV Squad, TMZ and Pop Eater, focusing on gossipy topics of interest that tend to push shows up trending topics lists.
 

~ DIGITAL ADVERTISING ~

 
GroupM, parent company to WPP agencies Maxus, MEC, MediaCom, and Mindshare, announced the launch of the industry’s first Demand Side Platform (DSP) mobile ad solution, developed in conjunction with Boston-based DataXu and led by GroupM’s Joule mobile unit. The solution, which will be integrated with GroupM’s new B3 Mobile solution, provides advertisers with the ability to control media investments based on downstream consumer activity on mobile apps and across branded mobile sites.
 
Flixster and movie review site Rotten Tomatoes struck a strategic alliance with NCM Media Networks to allow advertisers reach moviegoers on the web, on mobile and across 17,000+ cinema screens including the AMC, Cinemark and Regal Entertainment chains.
 

~ TECHNOLOGY DEALS, MERGERS AND SKIRMISHES ~

 
BlackBerry purveyor Research In Motion has acquired the assets of software company DataViz, per the CrackBerry blog, developer of the popular Documents To Go iPhone app.
 
Connecticut Attorney General Richard Blumenthal says he is seeking confirmation from Craigslist that it has permanently closed its adult services section and that it is taking steps to prevent prostitution ads from migrating to other parts of the site.
 
Fresh off its IPO, Skype continues to try and build out new revenue streams, unveiling a new Channel Partner program that will offer installation, configuration and support services for Skype enterprise customers.
 
RRsat has entered a partnership with Europe’s Digital Media Center to offer a complete global playout and content delivery solutions to regional broadcasters. The partnership will see DMC and RRsat combine capabilities and networks through a dedicated fiber connection.
 

~ TRENDS, RESEARCH, ETC.  ~

 
Twitter‘s recently updated iPhone and BlackBerry client apps are already two of the most popular ways to access the microblogging service, according to a company blog post. Mobile users have jumped 62% since mid-April and some 16% of new Twitter users begin from their mobile phones. The company also notes that 3rd party desktop client apps like TweetDeck power some of the service’s most active and frequent users.

The percentage of U.S. searches for the week ending Aug. 28 for Bing/Yahoo combined searches, their first full week as a combined entity, accounted for 24.56% of all U.S. searches, according to Experian Hitwise, as Google continued to dominate with 71.43% of the market. Shopping and Social Networking categories showed double-digit increases in their share of traffic coming directly from search engines.
 

~ GADGETS & APPS ~

 
RealNetworks’ GameHouse division has developed a iPhone and iPad game around long-running drama NCIS for CBS Mobile. The game allows fans to solve 5 different cases developed with the show’s creative team, harnessing skills such as fingerprint matching, chemical analysis and autopsies. The iPhone/iPod Touch version costs $4.99 while the iPad version runs $1 more.
 

~ EXECUTIVE MOVES ~

 
Former HP chief executive Mark Hurd was officially hired as co-President of rival Oracle, joining existing President Safra Catz and reporting to CEO Larry Ellison. Mark will also join Oracle’s Board of Directors.
 
Hitviews hired Hollywood talent broker Susan Gold (founder of Celebrity Talent) as Talent Relations and Business Development Director, West Coast. She will work with Hitviews’ Chief Creative Officer, Caitlin Hill and will be based in Los Angeles.
 
CBS Interactive’s GameSpot has named John Davison as VP/Programming for Games and Metacritic, CBS Corp. He will work closely with Ricardo Torres, Editor in Chief of GameSpot, and Marc Doyle, Editor and Co-founder of Metacritic, to expand the sites’ content.
 
Out-of-home advertising company Titan Worldwide tapped Greg Ald as National Account Manager to be based in the company’s New York office.
 
The Digital Place-based Advertising Association (DPAA) appointed Susan Danaher as President of the organization, replacing Suzanne LaForgia, effective immediately. Suzanne will continue in the sector as EVP/Sales at Reach Media Group and become Treasurer of the DPAA.
 


~ WEBSITE OF THE DAY ~

 
Certain brands stand on their own only too well when representing their core business, but how do marketers communicate the full picture of what a company can do? Xerox, the copier company that (like Kleenex) owns its category from a branding perspective, is one such example. RealBusiness.com is the new web centerpiece of a massive new print, TV, web and out-of-home campaign launched by Y&R yesterday to communicate its range of business services. It’s easy to pack such info in a website but getting users to actually read it is another issue entirely. This site features a simple interface with striking visuals – it looks like the set of a Jacques Tati movie. Click on a services category to get taken to a different floor of the glass skyscraper. Like Marvel Universe heroes who are called on to guest star in new comics, digital versions of corporate icons such as Mr. Clean and Bullseye the Target Dog are utilized to showcase details, case studies and customer testimonials from Xerox’s Document Management division. High-tech interactive billboards featuring motion-sensing and touch-screen technologies will also feature the characters.
