Good morning. It’s Wednesday, September 5, 2012, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing. 

FOX Sports Media Group is turning to Olympics television producer David Neal to develop and execute coverage plans for the upcoming FIFA World Cup across all FOX Sports platforms including broadcast, cable and digital. Neal’s responsibilities as Executive Producer, World Cup on FOX will include the development of the creative plan for the games as well as designing the production infrastructure for FSMG’s stadium and studio operations, and forming the on-air, production and technical teams. Neal previously worked at NBC where he produced nine Olympics, four NBA Finals, two World Series, and a Super Bowl pregame show.

On the Air

The new NFL season officially kicks off tonight, as NBC Sports presents NFL Kickoff 2012 beginning at 7:30p. Al Michaels once again handles play-by-play with analyst Cris Collinsworth and sideline reporter Michele Tafoya. Bob Costas returns to host Football Night in America reporting from MetLife Stadium on Wednesday joining co-host Dan Patrick, as well as Tony Dungy, Rodney Harrison, Peter King and Mike Florio. Michelle Beadle hosts the concert portion of NFL Kickoff 2012 on NBC, featuring performances by Mariah Carey and No Doubt, from a specially constructed stage in front of 30 Rockefeller Plaza.

Around the dial on NFL Network, the channel is ringing in the new season with a three and a half hour NFL Gameday Kickoff at 4p. Host Melissa Stark and analysts Sterling Sharpe, Deion Sanders, Mike Mayock and LaDainian Tomlinson will be live from New York. The network will then simulcast the NFL Kickoff 2012 performances by No Doubt and Mariah Carey at 7:30p.

ESPN, meanwhile, offers pre- and post-game coverage of the Kickoff game with a special lineup of NFL-themed studio shows. Suzy Kolber hosts NFL 32 at 3:30p before Trey Wingo hosts NFL Live at 4p. At 7p, the channel offers NFL Kickoff and returns with a post-game edition of NFL Live at midnight.

CBS Sports added orthopedic surgeon Dr. Neal ElAttrache to the crew where he will serve as a medical consultant for its NFL coverage this season. As part of his duties, Dr. ElAttrache will be available throughout the season to analyze and explain injuries as well as interprete injury reports, starting with CBS Sports’ NFL kickoff onSept. 9.

Just in case ya missed it, FOX NFL Sunday staple Michael Strahan officially joined Kelly Ripa as the new co-host of Live! with Kelly and Michael. Strahan will continue his role on the NFL show, however, commuting to LA on weekends during the fall.

UFC continues to deliver for FUEL TV, as the channel marked its highest peak audience and most-watched UFC Prelims ever last month, according to Nielsen numbers. Overall, the network was up 50% in total viewers and 150% among men 18-49 compared to August 2011. The Aug. 4 UFC Prelims scored as the most-watched ever with 194,000 total viewers.

NBC Sports Radio is officially live, with 178 stations carrying the network nationwide. Programming includes: The Erik Kuselias Show (Monday-Friday 7-10p); Amani and Eytan (Monday-Friday 10p-1a); The Dan Schwartzman Show (Tuesday-Saturday) 1-5a; Safety Blitz with Rodney Harrison (a two-hour weekend show) as well as 24/7 anchored national updates featuring Jon Stashower, Kay Adams and Dan Schwartzman.

On the regional front, MSG kicks off its 2012 regular season coverage of Giants football with a special night of programming tonight before the game. Starting at 4:30p, the channel will have the season premiere of Giants Chronicles, featuring Eli Manning as he reviews the 2011 season and the team’s Super Bowl victory. At 5p, MSG slates 90 minutes of Giants Opening Drive Live with hosts Bob Papa and Carl Banks.
 
Comcast SportsNet announced that it would be launching the most comprehensive Eagles lineup in the network’s history including news and talk shows, six Eagles Pregame Live programs from Lincoln Financial Field, as well as coverage from CSNPhilly.com Eagles’ Insiders and online coverage. Three former Philadelphia Eagles will be joining Comcast SportsNet’s Eagles’ programming this season. Leonard Weaver will appear weekly on Eagles Pregame Live, while Ike Reese takes on Eagles Postgame Live. Meanwhile, recently retired Brian Westbrook will co-host Eagles Extra with Ron Burke and will appear every Monday on Daily News Live throughout the Eagles season. Former Eagle Brian Baldinge returns this season and will be a part of Eagles Extra each Monday.

Sportsman Channel is launching Sportsman HD in Comcast’s Colorado and New Mexico regions, as part of an ongoing rollout of the channel nationwide. Comcast viewers in Colorado can find Sportsman HD on channel 778 in most areas. Colorado Springs is 729, Pueblo in 764 and Fort Collins is 844. Comcast viewers in New Mexico can find Sportsman HD on channel 892.

To promote Comcast SportsNet and The Comcast Network’s HD channels shifting on Comcast systems in the Philadelphia area, on-air talent from the channel created a “Call Me Maybe” parody video to tell viewers about the move. The video, called Watch Us Baby, features talent that includes Neil Hartman, Michael Barkann, Dei Lynam, Derrick Gunn, Amy Fadool, Lisa Hillary, Danny Pommels, Marshall Harris, Ricky Bottalico, Ben Davis, Sarah Baicker and Tim Panaccio.

Integrated marketing agency CSE announced that the company will handle marketing communications for Shaw Sports Turf, a subsidiary of Berkshire Hathaway, Inc. and one of the leading synthetic turf companies in North America.

Digital Fields

Fox Sports Mobile and Advanced Platforms are expanding their relationship, utilizing Digitalsmiths’ personalized video discovery technology to create more relevant content recommendations for users. Digitalsmiths’ Seamless Discovery will look to incorporate features that include personalized search, recommendations and browsing, as well as social trending and mood-based recommendations to suggest relevant TV shows, movies and live events.

NFL Digital Media announced that this year, NFL.com will expand its streaming offerings with features that include: highlights in less than two minutes after the play occurs, NFL Game Rewind (offering every play of every 2012 NFL regular season game with DVR controls), as well as the return of the series The NFL Season: A Biography Presented by SAP.

NBC Sports is set to introduce The Sunday Night Football, a custom made football that will travel with the SNF crew throughout the NFL season. Fans of SNF on Facebook and Twitter will be able to keep up with the ball on the SNF Facebook page, as well as “follow its path through each city and recommend where it should visit while in town.” At the end of each SNF game, the ball will be signed by the player of the game.
