Cynopsis: Kids!


Good morning. It’s Wednesday, September 5, 2007, and this is your first early morning briefing. 

The Los Angeles Times and Fox Walden come together to include the first scented newspaper ad, as part of the marketing plan for the release of Walden Media and Mandate Film’s movie, Mr. Magorium’s Wonder Emporium, which opens nationwide November 16, 2007.  The fragrant ad, which will offer the scratch and sniff aroma of frosted cake (the scent is in the ink), makes its debut in the LA Times’ annual Fall Movie Sneaks section this Sunday, September 9.  No doubt this would have made Smell-O-Vision creator Hans Laube a happy guy.  It was used but once in William Castle’s movie Scent of Mystery.  Note to John Waters: Now you can happily re-release the Odorama version of Polyester with a matching ad push (odiferous though it might be).

Canada gets a new digital channel next month when Teletoon Retro launches on October 1, 2007 at 6p.  The channel, which is targeted to adults 25-49 and is also hoping for family viewing, is available through Bell ExpressVu’s digital package and will feature the likes of Bugs Bunny, The Flintstones, Rocky and Bullwinkle, The Jetsons, Fat Albert, Tom & Jerry and the Superfriends, among others.  Other carriers will be announced soon.  From now through the launch date, Teletoon will offer a one-hour Teletoon Retro block each night from 7:30p.

Portfolio Entertainment has inked a Latin American broadcast deal for its tween-targeted animated series Carl2 (Carl Squared).  HBO Latin America has picked up the first two seasons (39×30′) of Carl2, which it will televise in Spanish in Portuguese.  The deal was brokered by Portfolio Entertainment’s Latin American agent, Katherine O’Brien of KO Film Distribution.

Decode Entertainment is set to attend MIPCOM 2007 next month with new animated and live-action programs including the introduction of Turner Broadcasting’s My Spy Family (26×22′), aimed at K6-14 the show revolves around a family of former spies.  My Spy Family premieres this fall in the UK on Boomerang.  Decode’s slate also include: the live-action tween-aimed series Latest Buzz (39×22′); the sci-fi comedy Clang Invasion (26×22′ or 52×11′), a co-production with Singapore’s Scrawl Studios, Hong Kong’s Agogo, Decode and YTV; Halifax Film’s preschool series Bo on the GO! (26×22′); the CGI animated series Urban Vermin (26×22′) for K6-12, about two raccoon brothers, is in production for YTV; Chop Socky Chooks (26×22′), a Decode and Aardman co-production aimed at K7-11, that will bow on Cartoon Network and Teletoon.


Cartoon Network’s New Media division launched Master Control, a 15-week initiative enabling kids to vote on their favorite shows and meet other fans on Young users can join one of three Master Control teams, each of which have home pages that serve as virtual hangouts for the team. The network will roll out various team-themed activities and extras throughout the season, culminating in a tournament style competition.

Amberwood Entertainment has inked a deal with Mattel to create a line of toys based on the new CG animated series RollBots (26×30′).  Targeted to K6-11, RollBots is in production now and scheduled to premiere on Canada’s YTV in fall 2008.

Bandai Co. and Buffalo Inc. will launch their new product the Pasokon Kids Key on September 14, 2007.  The Pasokon Kids Key is a USB key, which when plugged into a computer will prevent kids from going to various places online where they ought not to be going.  The new product will put computers using Windows XP or Windows Vista into a kid mode that will allow kids to go online through kid-safe portals.

Warner Bros. Consumer Products has entered into a deal with Salvage, a contemporary adult sportswear manufacturer, to produce a clothing line based on DC Comics’ Super Heroes, Superman and Batman.  Salvage’s newly created DC Comics-themed apparel will feature images of Superman and Batman as well as incorporating items inspired by movie The Dark Knight, the 2008 sequel to Batman Begins.  The new line will be a young men’s contemporary collection and will be available at retail in spring 2008.

Pokemon USA, Inc. launches a back-to-school promotion with Armour-Eckrich Meats LLC and to support the LunchMakers product line.  Characters from Pokemon Diamond and Pokemon Pear will be included on 30+ million special edition LunchMakers packaging as part of an instant-win promotion, which runs through November 2007 at retailers including Kroger and Wal-Mart.


Later today Scholastic will reveal the 40 New York City public schools that will take part in the J.K. Rowling Open Book Tour, when the author and tour stop in NYC’s Carnegie Hall on October 19, 2007.  Rowling will read from Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows and answer questions at the event.  While in the US, Rowling will appear at two other events for school kids, in LA at the Kodak Theater, October 15, and in New Orleans at the Ernest N. Morial Auditorium and Convention Center, October 18.


Jennifer Askin joins 4Kids Entertainment as Manager/International Broadcast and Digital Rights, reporting to Brian Lacey, EVP/International.  Askin will oversee marketing of 4Kids’ programming for new media platforms and will also be responsible for traditional media TV sales in the Netherlands, Belgium, Turkey, Poland, the Ukraine, Belarus and across Central Asia, South Africa and Africa.  Prior to this Askin worked in TV news production for ABC News London, and NBC News, including MSNBC.
