Cynopsis: DIGITAL
09/29/10

Good morning, it’s Wednesday, September 29, 2010, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.  If you would like to read this or any other Cynopsis edition online, click here

The subscription-based Hulu Plus service (gradually rolling out on an invitation-only basis) has signed a couple of key distribution deals that will soon make the $10/mo. service available on both Tivo (Premiere) DVRs and Roku streaming media set-tops. The network owners’ best chance of getting traction for Hulu Plus, which offers full seasons or entire back catalogs of shows in easy-to-browse verticals, is to make it available on all the popular streaming platforms and these, along with previously announced integrations with Sony Bravia, Vizio and the Xbox 360, give the service a good start. No word yet on a deal with the newly relaunched Apple TV, which began shipping this week.

~ MULTIPLATFORM CONTENT NEWS ~

CBS picked up another pilot based on a Twitter feed. CBS TV Studios and Ashton Kutcher’s Katalyst Media will co-produce the show, being described as a modern redux of The Odd Couple, per THRShh, Don’t tell Steve consists of a diatribe of one roommate complaining about the inane antics of another.

USA Network reports that its Character Rewards loyalty program around Club Psych, which awards points for watching videos, chatting, playing games or reposting content to Twitter and Facebook, has amassed more than 30k registered users and is responsible for a 30% lift in traffic to the Psych vertical.

Disney Online‘s The Possibility Shop, an original web series produced by The Jim Henson Co., returns for second season on DisneyFamily.com with creative projects, activities and games for the family. Clorox is also returning as the sponsor.

~ INNOVATORS & START-UPS ~

The hyperlocal-programmed Cool Music Network signed an affiliation agreement with LIN TV, for the carriage of the Cool TV digital multiplex channel in eleven of LIN Media’s 17 markets. The agreement puts the channel in an additional 6 million homes.

~ TECHNOLOGY DEALS, MERGERS AND SKIRMISHES ~

AOL acquired Michael Arrington’s tech blog TechCrunch and fast-growing video syndication platform 5min Media. 5min, which attracted an aggregate 20 million uniques in Aug. 2010, maintains an archive of 200k how-to and DIY videos and syndicates them out using its semantic VideoSeed platform. Publishers can access titles using the company’s API, widgets or search-based embeds. The 5min deal is the second major video acquisition for AOL this year, following its purchase of creation/distribution tool maker StudioNow for $36.5 million. Terms of the deals were not disclosed.

Fox, CBS, ABC and other broadcasters filed a lawsuit against Seattle-based streaming media start-up Ivi for offering online access to its TV shows without permission. Similar to subscription-based Spotify, Ivi charges $4.99/mo. (after a free 30-day trial) to enable customers to stream live feeds of broadcast channels from New York City and Seattle via servers to a desktop-based app. Major League Baseball, Univision, Telemundo and several station groups are also plaintiffs in the suit.

Troubled media conglomerate Tribune may have taken a step toward emerging from bankruptcy, announcing an agreement with two of its major debt holders, Oaktree Capital Management, L.P. and Angelo, Gordon & Co, L.P.

~ TRENDS, RESEARCH, ETC.  ~

A total of 160 million Americans or 55% of the population consumed World Cup content across all ESPN platforms during this year’s month-long contest and consumption spiked dramatically across on a variety of screens, according to new multiplatform research from ESPN’s Research+Analytics team. Out-of-home TV viewing and usage of non-TV platforms (Radio, Internet, Mobile, Print) added 1.5 million viewers per minute (46%) to the World Cup TV average audience. Some 7.2 million fans per day consumed the World Cup on TV and some other platform – representing 26% of ESPN’s daily World Cup reach, but accounting for nearly half of all daily World Cup consumption:

  • Fans spent 4.9 billion gross minutes with ESPN.com and ESPN Mobile properties
  • 110,000 persons used ESPN digital media to view World Cup content in the ave. minute (greater than the audience for 23 cable networks over the 31 days of the event)
  • Internet use accounted for 61% of non-TV usage, with internet video rep. 1/3 of the total
  • Simultaneous streams of USA vs. Algeria and England vs. Slovenia on ESPN3.com proved to be a huge draw as the broadband network out-delivered 69 cable networks on June 23, achieving an average audience of 396,000
  • 861,000 persons, or 18% of ESPN’s total ave. audience, consumed the World Cup in out-of-home locations – 44% at work, 16% in cars and 15% in bars and restaurants

~ GADGETS & APPS ~

If you’re someone who has never gotten around to buying an eReader because you already have to lug around a laptop for work, you’ll be happy to learn that Amazon has finally released a Kindle reading application for the web. Kindle for the Web is browser-based (supporting Firefox, Safari, Chrome) so there’s no need to download an app (although, of course, Kindle apps are available for Android, iPhone, Windows, Mac, BlackBerry and iPad.)

IFC has launched its first-ever iPhone app to promote the original comedy series The Increasingly Poor Decisions of Todd Margaret, premiering this Friday at 10 pm ET. The free app will help viewers make their own poor decisions on a variety of topics – including guys, girls, sex, work, food, travel, fashion and manners – and provide random tips for spoiling things for yourself and others around you.

~ EXECUTIVE MOVES ~

Former Adobe Systems VP John McGee has joined communication software firm Thunderhead as President and COO.

Former Managing Director of Publicis’ Optimedia International, Vicki Mendelson, joined New York-based LogicLab as VP/Advertiser Sales.

~ WEBSITE OF THE DAY ~

One publisher hopes that the dampened enthusiasm of the Dems this election cycle won’t curtail the public’s hunger for political news. CNN announced the relaunch of CNNPolitics.com and its Political Ticker blog in time for election season, featuring more white space, additional polling and interactive features and new recurring editorial features from anchor Wolf Blitzer, Howie Kurtz and political editor Mark Preston. The network also plans to promote the site on air; every day up until the election (and every hour into prime time), live on-air updates from the CNNPolitics.com desk will appear on air. CNN faces its stiffest challenge from up and comer Politico.com, the Beltway-trusted news source edited by former Wa Po colleagues John Harris and Jim VandeHei that benefits from a dedicated focus on the vertical. So far, CNN’s brand and reach has helped it maintain its position – the site again finished first among Global News and Current Events sites in Aug. in terms of traffic and usage, according to Nielsen Online.
