Good morning. It’s Wednesday, September 18, 2013, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing. 

FOX Sports locked in a deal with the World Boxing Council (WBC) to reel in the recently created, 24-card WBC World Cup of Professional Boxing to the FOX Sports family of networks, starting Friday, October 18. FOX receives exclusive broadcast rights in the U.S., where fights will air on FOX Sports 1, FOX Sports 2 and FOX Deportes. Exclusive rights also apply in the Caribbean through FOX Sports 2 and FOX Deportes, while non-exclusive rights apply in the Dominican Republic and Cuba. The agreement also covers broad new media options, including live streaming, On-Demand and highlights/clips via the Internet and mobile on FOXSports.com, FOXSportsGO or any other FOX Sports digital platform.

On the Air

The Bengal’s win over the Steelers on Monday Night Football propelled ESPN to take the night among all networks in viewers and all key male and adult demos. The game drew a 9.1 rating, representing an average of 14,329,000 viewers, according to Nielsen. In Pittsburgh, the game delivered an 11.9 rating on ESPN and a 27.9 on WTAE-ABC, for a combined 39.8 rating in the market. In Cincinnati, the game scored a 14.4 rating on ESPN and a 23.9 on WLWT-NBC, for a combined 38.3 rating in the market.
 
Meanwhile, NBC reports that this week’s telecast of Sunday Night Football drew an average of 20.5 million viewers, despite the hour-long rain delay. That would equate to the most-watched primetime NFL matchup between West Coast teams in nearly two decades, according to the network. The game finished with a 12.2/21 national household rating.

On Saturday, ABC’s coverage of Notre Dame’s win over Purdue averaged 4,789,000 viewers and a 3.0 rating. ABC also averaged 3,164,000 viewers and a 2.0 rating for its Saturday afternoon matchup of Oregon over Tennessee 52-14. ESPN averaged a significant 1,917,000 viewers for more than 17 consecutive hours of college football studio and game content on Saturday

Last Friday’s MLB Network Showcase telecast pitting the Yankees at Red Sox delivered the channel with its most watched regular season game of 2013 and its 8th-most watched regular season game telecast ever, averaging 450,000 viewers.

One last ratings kick. ESPN announced yesterday that viewership was up 13% in the month since Aug. 17 (not-so-coincidentally the same day FS1 &FS2 launched), according to Nielsen. Since August 17, ESPN averaged 1,217,000 viewers (P2+) on a 24-hour basis, up 13% compared to the same four weeks a year ago (1,079,000). In prime time, the network saw an uptick of 20% over 2012 with an average of 2,894,000 viewers (2,417,000 last year).

Danica Patrick has another line on her resume… awards host. The American Country Awards announced that the NASCAR driver will co-host the nationally televised awards ceremony with country music superstar Trace Adkins. The show airs on Dec. 10 at 8p from Las Vegas’ Mandalay Bay.

Because of high winds, races 11 and 12 of the America’s Cup Finals were postponed yesterday. Live coverage of Races 11 and 12 will now air today from 4-6p on NBCSN.

With the 2013 NASCAR Chase for the Sprint Cup in full swing, FOX Sports 1 is expanding its daily NASCAR news magazine program NASCAR Race Hub from 30 minutes to 1 hour, beginning Monday, Sept. 23 at 4p. FOX Soccer Daily will shift to the 3:30p time slot.

Ahead of UFC 168, the UFC will launch a seven-day seven-city media tour starting Sept. 23 to promote the event, headlined by a year-end championship rematch between middleweight champ Chris Weidman and Anderson Silva. UFC 168 takes place on Dec. 28 at MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. Cities will include LA, Las Vegas, New York, Bristol, Miami, Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo.

Digital & Technology

ESPN Digital Media’s NFL content across all platforms through three Monday Night Football games so far this season generated an average minute audience of 550,000 during telecasts, for a bump of 23% versus the same period a year ago. Monday’s Steelers/Bengals game on WatchESPN logged its second best NFL game ever with 179,000 unique viewers, 12.3 million live minutes and an average minute audience of 60,000.

NBC Sports reports that NBC Sports Live Extra’s live stream of SNF marked the best SNF game ever in all key digital metrics across all platforms (not counting NFL Kickoff and post-season games). The game generated 18,276,900 minutes, the most-ever for an SNF game. Compared to Week 2 of last year, traffic was up 82% in uniques, 94% in visits, 91% in live starts, 143% in minutes watched, and 25% in minutes/visit.

EA Sports honcho Andrew Wilson was named as the company’s new CEO, finally replacing previous CEO John Riccitiello who left six months ago.

John Brody has reportedly stepped down as the NFL’s vice president of Sponsorship and Media Sales, according to Bloomberg. Brody joined the league last February from Wasserman Media Group.
