Cynopsis: DIGITAL
09/15/10
Good morning, it’s Wednesday, September 15, 2010, and this is your first early morning digital briefing. If you would like to read this or any other Cynopsis edition online, click here.
There’s nothing like buying power to help push down prices. Wal-Mart has contracted with T-Mobile to begin offering its own branded wireless plan that customers can sign up for in any Wal-Mart store. Unlimited calls and texts will cost $45/month for the first line and $25 for each additional line, with no contract, no prepaid fee and no credit check. The service will launch next week with the choice of 5 handsets, including the Motorola Cliq XT smartphone priced at $249 (a phone that T-Mobile normally sells for $329 without a contract.)
Oxygen‘s live interactive viewing portal OxygenLive is adding a Foursquare-type experience to the mix with voice annotation functionality. Beginning with last night’s new episode of Bad Girls Club Miami, viewers can “blurt” out voice notes to their posts and check in to receive badges (“Miami Beyotch,” “Party Starter,” “Real Bad Girl” and “Frenemies Forever”) as well as view exclusive content. Social check in service Miso is powering the latter, including integration with the Miso mobile app (available for iPhone or Android.)
Hulu is offering select previews and first acts from a number of fall premiers and new show pilots before they appear on air. Sneak peeks include the first 8 minutes of ABC’s Castle, the first act from Brothers & Sisters and preview segments for the premiere episodes of My Generation, No Ordinary Family, The Whole Truth and Detroit 1-8-7.
ESPN.com says it kicked off the 2010 NFL season with 225.9 million page views and more than 318 million minutes – an 18% increase over last year factoring in traffic from Sunday and Monday. ESPN’s Mobile web site had 67 million + page views and 118 million minutes (up 67%), spent with NFL content on the ESPN mobile web site and ScoreCenter App.
Boxee‘s eagerly-anticipated Boxee Box, built by D-Link, is finally available for pre-order for $200 at Amazon in the U.S. and via Best Buy and the Future Shop in Canada. It will feature a remote with a full keyboard for all your social networking needs and stream HD content in 1080p and 5.1 surround. The company switched processors during its development process to Intel’s Atom CE4100 processor to accommodate more advanced interactivity, which explains the delay of the Boxee Box launch (originally planned for June.)
Call for Entries: The Webby Awards kicked off its call for entries for the year’s best online film and video with a new mash-up of memorable 5-word acceptance speeches. The deadline has been pushed up this year to Oct. 29 and the winners will be announced in April and honored in June, 2011. Categories include Best Comedy Series, Individual Performance and Viral Video.
Semantic web platform OpenAmplify unveiled a new natural language processing (NLP) technology giving advertisers the ability to analyze sentiment and intent toward a product or issue on a web site. The system assigns positive sentiment value to everyday language to help cull value from the social stream. The company says its “Co-reference” software can be layered on top of existing NLP technology and various targeting tools from agencies, ad networks and publishers to offer better insight into the sentiment, intentions and attitudes associated with persons and brands mentioned in content.
Check out WallRSS, a new tool from digital agency Attention and social media aggregator FeedMagnet. It’s basically an RSS feed for Facebook that allows you to track brand updates without having to see all the other junk that gets thrown at you on Facebook these days and without admitting to your friends that you “like” a certain company. So far its tracks over 200 company brand walls.
Baeblemusic has integrated all its custom-engineered long form video players with the Tremor Media video advertising service.
Verizon is introducing its own Android app store dubbed V CAST Apps later this month that will operate entirely independently of Google. This means that Verizon will be trying to woo developers to submit their apps to the V CAST store directly, waiving testing fees and offering streamlined approval and carrier billing (which could be a huge selling point for subscription-based apps,) and the same 70/30 revenue split offered by the Android store. Initially the V CAST App Store will only be available on Verizon handsets running Android 2.2, which includes the Incredible, Droid 1, Droid 2, and Droid X.
Thanks to the proliferation of news sites, mobile apps and tablet devices, American are spending more time following the news, according to a new report from the Pew Research Center for the People & the Press. Roughly a third (34%) of the public say they went online for news yesterday – on par with radio, and slightly higher than daily newspapers. And when cell phones, email, social networks and podcasts are factored in, 44% of Americans say they got news through one or more digital source yesterday. But even the digitally savvy are complementing their consumption with traditional sources – Only 9% of Americans got news through the internet and mobile without also using traditional sources. Other finding include:
- 26% of all Americans say they read a print newspaper yesterday, but only 8% did among adults younger than 30
- Far more men (50%) than women (39%) get news on digital platforms on any given day. Men are more likely to get news by cell phone, email, RSS feeds or podcasts than are women, but both are equally likely to get news via Twitter or social networking sites
- 33% regularly use search engines to get news on topics of interest, up from 19% in ’08
- While 31% of adults access the net over their cell, just 8% get news there regularly
Tablet computer unit shipments will reach approximately 58 million in 2014 as prices continue to fall, according to a new In-Stat projection, with 35 million of those shipping in the U.S. Amazon, Barnes & Noble and Sony have all reduced prices of their e-readers this year and at least one manufacturer is expected to break the $100 barrier by this Christmas.
MSN/Windows Live/Bing Search overtook Yahoo! as the #2 search engine in the U.S. for the first time with a 13.9% share of search volume in Aug. 2010, according to Nielsen, a 0.25% increase from last month. August was also the first month Bing began powering Yahoo searches; when combined the two represent 26% of the market.

Nokia unveiled three new location-based Symbian smartphones yesterday due out by the end of the year – the Nokia E7, Nokia C7 and Nokia C6 – each featuring an 8 megapixel camera that shoots 720p video and each powered by the same new OS featured in the upcoming Nokia N8.
- The E7 (495 Euro) is geared toward business users with a full QWERTY keyboard, a 4-inch slide up touchscreen and Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync on board. The 495 euro phone also
- The C7 (335 Euro) emphasizes social networking and entertainment apps
- The C6 (260 Euro) is the smallest of the three with a 3.2-inch AMOLED touchscreen display
Bar-based digital jukebox network TouchTunes Interactive launched a new free iPhone app, MyTouchTunes, that allows you to create, share and select song playlists from your phone.
You can see all the stars as you walk down Hollywood Blvd., virtually, with the new $2.99 Hollywood Star Walk mobile app from Tribune Interactive’s Apptivate.me unit. Find more than 2,000 stars by name, block, type or GPS location, read their bio and create a custom tour of the area. (The stars aren’t just on the Boulevard any more.)
Nokia announced that its Board Chairman Jorma Ollila is also planning to depart the company but that he will stay on until 2012 to help with the transition.
Seattle-based online real estate site Zillow.com announced that its founder and CEO Rich Barton is leaving his post to become Executive Chairman. Current COO Spenser Rascoff, co-founder of Hotwire.com, will take over as CEO. Fellow co-founder Lloyd Frink will also move from President to the new role of Chief Strategy Officer.
Pheedo’s San Francisco-based Dlvr.it division tapped Travel Ad Network founder Bob Sacco as Chief Revenue Officer.
Online video ad firm TidalTV hired former Mahalo.com social media director Susan Jaget and Fox Digital Media manager Datar Sahi as Directors of West Coast Sales, leading the company’s newly opened office on Olympic Blvd. in Los Angeles.
Universal Sports Network named Bart Leivo as VP/Business Development, responsible for creating new revenue opportunities for digital and linear-TV platforms. He will report to Perkins Miller, COO.
NBCU’s iVillage upped John Curbishley to SVP/Business Development. John continues to report to Jodi Kahn, EVP of iVillage.
Hong Kong-based MMOG publisher TurnOut Ventures Ltd., a joint venture between Turner Entertainment Holdings Asia-Pacific and Outblaze Investments, appointed Caroline Casey as Executive Director of Operations.
The next best thing to Hulu on your handheld is Fox Mobile-backed mobile subscription TV service Bitbop, which just launched its first Android app at VentureBeat’s DEMO conference that will stream full-length broadcast and cable TV shows to a variety of handsets. (BlackBerry is also supported, but sorry – no iPhone app yet.) For $10/month (no contract, carrier billing available) you can choose from a pretty extensive list of commercial free shows from most of the same program suppliers as Hulu, including Fox, NBC, A&E, CBS, FX, USA and MTV. Although the Hulu Plus offering (also $10/month) is much more extensive, one advantage of going with Bitbop is the option to download shows for later viewing, which is great when you’re about to hop on a plane or a subway. (Netflix’s iPhone and iPad apps are also streaming only.) Next up for Bitbop is feature-length on demand movies for $1-$5 each (trailers are already available on the service.) So far 20th Century Fox is the only studio signed.
