The stations are expected to bring $33 million in operating profit in 2006 on revenue of $150 million. This division made up 4% of the New York Times’ 2005 revenue of $3.4 billion. The nine stations are located in Scranton, Norfolk, Moline, Memphis, Huntsville, Ft. Smith, Des Moines, and two in Oklahoma City. The New York Times will retain ownership of The New York Times, the International Herald Tribune, The Boston Globe, 15 other newspapers, two local radio stations and 35 web sites including About.com.
In an anticipated move, Apple has developed a new gadget allowing consumers to stream full-length movies, photos, podcasts and TV shows to their home entertainment system. Code-named iTV, the player will cost $299 and be available in first quarter next year. Apple’s new movie service will sell new releases from the Disney, Pixar, Touchstone and Miramax studios for $12.99 if pre-ordered or purchased during the first week of release. Typically, new releases cost $14.99 and other libraried full-length films cost $9.99. Currently, there are approximately 75 films available now on iTunes and each one takes about 30 minutes to download using high-speed internet connections. Consumers can view the movies on their iPods or computers and eventually on TVs with the future iTV player. According to Steve Jobs, Apple wants its products in homes, cars and consumer’s pockets as it makes its mark on all areas of the digital lifestyle. Apple has also inked a deal with the NFL that will allow fans to purchase downloads of video highlights of NFL games via iTunes the following the games. The video highlights can be purchased piecemeal for $1.99 a piece, or fans can sign up for a season pass called Follow Your Team, that will cost $24.99. Finally, as part of the NFL deal, iTunes will also offer the NFL Network’s show NFL GameDay, ($1.99/per show, $19.99/season).
NBC Universal and its broadcast affiliates will launch an independent business-to-business unit to distribute NBC Universal and other independent video to users worldwide. IN RE: SURVIVOR
From all of the comments I have read over the ‘supposed’ racist Survivor show, I’ve noticed that no one has added any comments about 2 additional shows coming out that were noted in yesterday’s and today’s newsletters.
The first one: Casting Call: HGTV is casting for a new home improvement show and is looking for African-American, Hispanic and Asian families who live in the tri-state area. The show’s host will work with homeowners to tackle their mounting “to-do” lists. Energetic homeowners should apply by submitting their name, address, phone number, a paragraph describing themselves and digital photos of their family, as well as details and photos of the home improvement projects to:
The second one: Hip Hop Hold ‘Em, a new one-hour syndicated series merging poker with the hip hop lifestyle, will debut October 7. The show, now cleared in more than 75% of the U.S. and 80% of African-American DMAs, and in the top three markets – WPIX/New York, KCAL/Los Angeles and WCIU/Chicago. Each episode features five celebrities from music, sports, television, film or fashion, competing for their selected charity in a game of no limit Texas Hold ‘em. Hosted by Power 105’s Ed Lover, a few of the celebrities scheduled to appear include Ice T, Rubban Studdard, Hill Harper and Tyrese. It is produced in partnership between IMG Media, Emerge Entertainment and Primo Pictures.
So I ask, why is Survivor the only show pointed out? I don’t hear anyone protesting the HGTV show because there are no whites in it or the Hip Hop show because it’s primarily African-American oriented. Shouldn’t these shows be considered racist too? Then there’s the Miss America pageant – they are required to have women of all ethnic backgrounds. This is fantastic to have a show that showcases the variety of people in America. But for example, what about the Miss Black USA Pageant – why is this show not protested for singling out one race? We live in a nation where we have the BET network, many Hispanic channels on our cable systems, and even a gay and lesbian channel, but no white network. Survivor has chosen to represent what makes up America in a different way. But it all comes down to who is the better person (not race) at the end of the show. It seems to me that the ones that are calling Survivor a racist show, need to take a step back and look at the world and maybe themselves.

For those who are so sure something they haven’t even seen yet will “enforce racial stereotypes” – how about considering this: if you can’t imagine that there would be any other behavior than that which would enforce racial stereotypes, perhaps the problem is your inability to think beyond stereotypes. I’m not even a Survivor watcher & I don’t get the problem since racial stereotyping seems much more likely when you’ve got a “token” than when you have a team. Tell me: How can you debunk racial stereotypes better than showing a group of Real People (of whatever “minority”).

“the American Family Association’s plan to bombard the FCC with complaints about CBS airing the award-winning 9/11 documentary on September 10”
How about if THE REST OF US bombarded the FCC with complaints about the AFA’s insistence on air-brushing reality. Do you think Anyone’s reaction on 9/11 was “golly, gosh, gee, that’s just awful” ??

IN RE: HISPANIC RECOGNITION
Subject: Politicians bashing Hispanics
Dear Cynopsis
Not only today 9/11, we must never ever forget, those who so courageously faced their last living moments and sacrificed their lives unselfishly, responding to save others, in defense of this great New York City, and Nation. We must not forget the many Hispanics and minorities who answered the call unselfishly, not seeing or caring who was in danger, but caring only to help and save someone’s life, anyone’s life. Their intention was to save others, giving up their lives regardless of who it was. Many of these heroes crossed our borders or their parents did, and they did not back down when faced with the greatest challenge known to man. That of his own impending end, or when he comes face to face with his own death. Our nation can only be strong with courageous people who are willing to make the ultimate sacrifice when our national security is threatened or under siege. We must deny those politicians who are seeking office with an anti Hispanic agenda and platform.
The U.S. Hispanic market is approaching ONE TRILLION DOLLARS in buying power. This represents an enormous contribution to the over all American economy. Which Hispanics are very happy to be a part of. The Hispanic market today provides more meaningful jobs for non Hispanics than it does for Hispanics. This is particularly so, among the higher paying executive positions. (Which does not contribute to our Hispanic market buying power). This is true even when there are many qualified Hispanics who can occupy many of these jobs effectively and successfully. Those of us in Hispanic media have the responsibility to speak up about such an issue. It was not very long ago the Hispanic market did not exist. The market was created from people of very humble beginnings. It was our parents who paid the price to bring us to this juncture. Mostly limited in education, hard working and simple people, who survived indignities, open sanctioned discrimination and abuses at large.
Lets respect those who paid the price that bought us where we are today. Let us tell and make it known to all the political parties that it is unacceptable to build their appeal to voters by using Hispanics and Latinos as their scape goats. Why is it, I have never heard a politician say, that the first soldier to be killed in the Gulf War was a Puerto Rican. A Hispanic American. This is what should be used as an example of the valuable contributions Hispanics make to our society, along with the long list of Hispanic names of those who gave their lives and died on 9/11.
