Good morning, it’s Wednesday, September 10, 2008, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.

After last year”s very public break up over pricing issues NBC Universal kissed and made up with Apple, returning to the iTunes platform just in time for the fall TV season. Most programs from NBC, USA Network, SCI FI Channel, Bravo, Sleuth and NBC News are once again available for $1.99/episode (the standard price for a TV show on iTunes.) But there also a few older shows up for 99 cents or, in some cases, free. Look for more programs to be added in the coming weeks from divisions such as Oxygen and NBC Sports. Season passes fluctuate in price from $5.94 for season one of Andy Barker P.I. to a pricey $54.99 for season one of Alfred Hitchcock Presents. NBCU programs are also available in HD for the first time priced at $2.99. Both companies positioned the reunion as a win-win. NBC gains the ability to price and package as it sees fit, not mention regaining access to iTunes’ 65 million users. Apple gets back one of its biggest program suppliers. NBC also says it is working with Apple to improve the platform’s copyright protection.


Through a deal with AOL will make its short-form online video content accessible directly through Bebo‘s Open Media platform in the U.S. ESPN will offer highlights from games and major sporting events as well as video clips from ESPN original programming. The content will be delivered via an ESPN video player that will be embedded within a tailored Channel Profile.
CBS Sports will stream the entire 2008 SEC college football schedule live on free of charge this year. A total of 17 SEC match ups will be streamed on, accessible via a link from all CBS affiliate sites, concluding with the SEC Championship Game on Saturday, Dec. 6 (4 p ET.)
Music magazine Blender‘s website launched a new weekly video podcast named Blender Burner, hosted by editor Joe Levy. Yahoo Music will get exclusive rights to each new episode over the weekend, after which an embeddable version will pop up on the Blender homepage and video site. Blender Burner follows a news format – Forbes’ annual Hip Hop Cash Kings is the top story – along with other fun stuff such as a weekly music-themed content shout out tentatively called “Download of the Day.” This week’s recommendation from musician Pop Levi is worth checking out: the first “stereophonic” video posted to YouTube. Call for Content: Video sharing site Dailymotion and the are inviting filmmakers to submit films 60-seconds in length or less to the Short Circuit film competition, the top prize of which is a one-week trip for two people to next year’s Cannes Film Festival. A panel of judges will narrow the field down to 10 final entries, which will be screened at the Raindance Film Festival in London in October. British filmmaker Michael Winterbottom (Mighty Heart) will serve as Jury President. The deadline for submissions is September 23, 2008.


New players presenting at the TechCrunch 50 Conference this week include:

  • Katalyst Media principals Ashton Kutcher and Jason Goldberg unveiled, an animated video series/blog skewering pop culture from the perspective of three animated youngsters. YouTube and Yahoo’s OMG celeb news site will also feature the girls
  • Moonjee is one of those cool online apps that generates funny faces from the photos you upload. The company is developing a number of apps for leading social networking portals
  • integrates social networking, digital content and interactive tools in a complete online platform geared towards Tweens and Pre-teens. Young users can create their own personal web sites, engage in multiplayer games, read news most relevant to them and even publish their own articles
  • collates and analyzes postings from LinkedIn, Facebook and Twitter to help you keep up with critical business related news about colleagues and clients

Political news site Politico partnered with vertical ad network manager Adify to launch a new content syndication network that shares ad revenue with publishers who pick up Politico’s stories. Politico’s sales team sells national ads attached to the stories.
Global online music licensing platform will be announcing a strategic partnership with outsourced copyright management firm RightsFlow today allowing allow smaller recording labels to quickly and easily set up a commercial licensing store directly on their web site.
Event Shout Out: Online video stars alongside live stand-up at a weekly event hosted by funny man Thomas Kelly, creator of the web TV show and host of This week’s gathering will be held on Thursday at 7:30 at Ochi’s Lounge in the basement of Comix, 353 West 14th Street in Manhattan.


In more news from Apple’s “Let’s Rock” conference Steve Jobs unveiled a major new version of iTunes. A new “Genius” feature takes a page from social music services like Pandora, automatically generating playlists of songs that “go great together.” The Genius Sidebar can be set to upload your library contents to the iTunes Store so that it’s better equipped to recommend songs you might like.
Apple is also revamping its iPod line up of MP3 players. The thicker old school classic will be replaced with a slimmer 120 GB model for $249. The new iPod Nano promises to be the thinnest iPod yet and ships with the “Genius” ability to create intuitive playlists without having to connect to iTunes. A new version of the iPod Touch, which will be out in time for the holidays, is also thinner and comes with integrated speakers for listening to music and online radio on the go. Both new models will also ship with new headphones that include a remote control and a mike.
Virgin Mobile USA announced plans to launch the Shuttle, the first handset released in the U.S. that will integrate recently acquired Helio content services. A new Helio a la carte plan, modeled after Virgin’s unlimited prepaid voice plan, will give Helio users unlimited minutes for a flat fee of $80.


Social networking is getting more advanced on mobile devices. AT&T unveiled My Communities, a new on deck mobile platform powered by Intercasting Corp. allowing users join, update and interact with a number of popular social networks including MySpace, LiveJournal, Rabble, Xanga and PhotoBucket without having to register on the web. The integrated app, available from AT&T’s MEdia Mall for $2.99/month, is built on Intercasting’s Anthem platform.
Verizon Wireless‘ answer is SocialLife, also powered by Intercasting, allowing users to view messages, approve or deny friend requests, post comments or update status of their profiles. SocialLife can be found in the Community section of Get It Now-enabled phones or under the Browse and Download section of the Media Center on some Verizon handsets for $1.49/month.


Social media advertising start-up Buddy Media launched the beta version of BuddyBrain, a new social control center marketers can use to manage social networking application-driven ad campaigns.


Disney-ABC Television Group added a trio of executives to its digital media team. Former Yahoo marketer Karin Timpone joins as SVP/Product Strategy and Marketing for the digital media team; Lauren DeVillier, also formerly of Yahoo, takes the role of VP/Digital Media, Disney Channel; and Beth Johnson comes aboard as VP/Digital Media, ABC Daytime & SOAPnet after a stint as Editorial Director of Digital Media for Bravo. All three executives report to Albert Cheng, EVP/Digital Media for Disney-ABC Television Group.
Fox Mobile Entertainment made several personnel changes to its management team:

  • Andrew Stalbow was upped to SVP of the division after serving as VP of International for FME located in London. He will be based in Los Angeles and will be responsible for mobile content and distribution for Fox worldwide, reporting to Jamie Samson, EVP/Business & Legal Affairs and General Counsel
  • Amelia Gammon will become the new VP/International, responsible for international content distribution, licensing and marketing. Amelia will be based in Fox’s London office
  • Matt McMahon has been appointed Executive Director of Content and Business Development. He is responsible for managing Fox’s relationship with MediaFLO and managing operations and development of Fox’s WAP networks
  • Adam Wilensky has been named Director of Media and Production

Barbara E. Martinez will be leaving her post as Deputy Managing Editor of Politico to become Managing Editor at Global News Enterprises. She will oversee editorial and technical aspects of the Global News site, expected to launch in Jan. 2009.
Bridget Allen and Jason Jones both joined Ascent Media as Vice Presidents in the Global Viia Strategic Sales team and will focus on business development in the US and EMEA respectively. They report to John Phipps, SVP/Global Strategic Sales for Viia.



Online web TV studio maniaTV, best known for shows like Dave Navarro’s Spread TV, launched its first scripted web comedy Midnight Rida. A spoof of the original 80’s version of Knight Rider, it stars Mitch McKnight as an intern for an LA-based secret intelligence bureau who uses the powerful technology of G.A.R.I. (Ghetto Artificial Replica Intelligence, housed in a late model Caddy) to catch the bad guys. Devin Boddie and Michael Mihail of Guerilla Hollywood created the show and comedian DeRay Davis does the jive-talking voice of the car. Midnight Rida is not only hilarious but it can also been seen as an important next step in web entertainment. It relies on funny dialogue and low-tech special effects to carry the story in an organic way – meager production values can go a long way in comedy. It’s built to integrate advertisers like Unilever’s Axe in at the script level. And the show is distributed virally via embeddable video and widgets that allow users to tune into each weekly episode from the comfort of their MySpace page.
