Good morning. It’s Wednesday, October 9, 2013, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.

NEW PROGRAMMING & DEALS

Alloy Media and Break Media are merging to create a new online video streaming company called Defy Media. The new company will target younger audiences, and combine Alloy Digital‘s 95 million YouTube network viewers a month and Break Media 70 million visitors a month. Variety reports the companies will be worth a combined $100 million in annual revenue after the merger. Alloy Digital owns popular children’s channel SMOSH, and Break Media’s primary channel is comedy site Break.com.

Viacom and Twitter Amplify made a deal to team up for all future award shows starting with November’s 2013 MTV Europe Music Awards. MTV will offer sponsorship opportunities around real-time highlights with Twitter Amplify, and the program will allow brands to deliver social video advertising on all its digital platforms. The announcement comes after the success of MTV’s test of the Twitter Amplify program during the 2013 MTV VMA broadcast in August.

International programming web video service DramaFever announced its first global syndication deal with one of Japan’s largest networks, Fuji TV. DramaFever will have exclusive online rights to distribute Japanese hit TV shows on Fuji TV, and syndicate them to Hulu and Netflix… DramaFever is also debuting its first original series co-produced with Korean studio Hwa & Dam Pictures called Heirs. Its 20 episodes will be exclusively available on DramaFever in North America; syndication rights belong to Netflix and Hulu.

The BBC announced its plans for the BBC Store, where viewers can buy and own shows through digital platforms. The service will be available in the UK only, and there is no set date when it will launch. BBC also announced yesterday, a new digital music product BBC Playlister.

News video site Now This News is partnering with Adspace Digital Mall Network to bring short news videos to 200 malls across the country. NTN will create twelve-second breaking news headlines updated in real-time, 15-second Instagram edition videos of current news features, and 20-second news video teasers for the ad network.

CONTENT MEDIA

NBC is teasing its newest show Dracula before its Oct. 25 premiere with an animated online companion series, Dracula Rising. The new web show will be available on NBC’s YouTube channel.

Bravo and Starcom USA unveiled new digital content for Top Chef viewers called Top Chef Home Edition sponsored by Kraft Foods. Fans will be able to engage in cooking games and activities offered through the Top Chef’s homepage on BravoTV.com. Another new digital feature from Bravo sponsored by Toyota is Toyota’s #TopChef Social Snaps, which peeks into the network’s celebrity social profiles – starting with Top Chef judges.

Pemberley Digital, of the Emmy-winning YouTube show The Lizzie Bennett Diaries, released another Jane Austin digital series spin-off, Emma Approved, based on Emma Woodhouse from Austin’s Emma. There will also be an adjacent blog that showcases the clothing worn by the show’s characters.

Kids programming YouTube channel Annoying Orange announced a partnership with Collective Digital Studios to produce new shows for the channel. The first is The Misfortune of Being Ned, which premiered today. Gusto Rules will be available in January, and new episodes of both will debut every week on the channel.

Call for Submissions: Cynopsis is producing its annual Holiday Programming Guide, which comes out on November 26 and will be sent to all Cynopsis and Cynopsis Kids subscribers. If your network has holiday-themed programming airing from November 27 through December 31, please send your listings to Lynn Leahey at [email protected] no later than Monday November 18. Please include the following information: type of program (i.e. series, special, documentary, movie or holiday-themed episode), title, dates and times of all airings (please indicate when the show first premieres and when subsequent encores will air). A confirmation email will be sent following each submission from Lynn (if you don’t receive a confirmation email, please resubmit).

TECHNOLOGY

Microsoft’s Vice President of Marketing Yusuf Mehdi shared his two cents on the future of home entertainment – or at least what Microsoft thinks it will look like. Mehdi explained at the ANA Masters of Marketing that the home’s main computing system will be connected to the television, and link other devices like smartphones and tablets. He also predicted that sensors and voice command would take over the touch screen technology.

RESEARCH

Unruly Media’s most shared brands for the month of September feature Thailand Mobile’s TrueMove’s Giving video campaign in the top spot, with 1.16 million shares. Phonebloks took second at 973,454 shares and Samsung landed in third place for its Galaxy Note 3 ad, at 785,230 shares. LG placed fourth for its Meteor Prank campaign with 732,554 shares and Poo-Pourri came in at fifth for its Girls Don’t Poop campaign with 695,763 shares.

Researcher Kantar Media started a new TV audience measurement service Audience Advisor that will find patterns in purchases and demographic data from set-top boxes. Kantar will take data from a million set-top boxes within homes to record those subscribing to cable, satellite or Telco TV offerings. Nielsen and Rentrak currently offer similar services, but Group M and Saatchi & Saatchi are already clients of the new service.

MOBILE GAMING + APPS

The Time Out Group unveiled its universal, international app, which combines all of the city editions into a single platform. The new app will take a user’s geographic location to recommend events, as well as provide editor picks. The app also features restaurant reservations and ticket sales.

Amazon Studios hired Morgan Wandell to lead its drama series department. Wandell was previously ABC’s Head of Drama and was responsible for hits like Ugly Betty and Criminal Minds.

BBC Worldwide North America appointed Chris Cole as its Senior Vice President of TV Co-productions and Sales. Prior to his new role, he was Director of Development for BBC One and BBC TWO.

DIGITAL SPOTLIGHT OF THE DAY

Evolve Media’s SpringBoard Video platform announced its latest ad innovation, the 3D Out-of-Player. The new technology adds 3D effects to standard video ads, and advertisers can still track views with SpringBoard’s social analytics component. Evolve President Brian Fitzgerald told Cynopsis, “the major significance of the product is that the video can be shared on all social platforms, because the 3D effects sync perfectly with any player  regardless of how the player is re-sized, or where it’s shared.” The 3D effects were recently used on a trailer for the new movie Machete Kills that hits theatres Oct. 11.
