Lots of news from NBC as the network canceled its new series The Playboy Club, making it the first cancelation of the fall season. Starting next Monday, NBC will replace The Playboy Club with encore episodes of Prime Suspect in the 10p slot and then later on October 31, the network is ready to debut its new primetime newsmagazine, Rock Center With Brian Williams in the time period. The Playboy Club premiered with a 1.6 rating among A18-49 and nearly 5.0 million total viewers and for its third episode this past Monday night, dipped to a 1.2 A18-49 rating and 3.4 million viewers.
NBC further gave full-season pickups to its new comedies Up All Night and Whitney. Up All Night starring Christina Applegate and Will Arnett has averaged a 2.3 rating with A18-49 during its first three weeks and Whitney, headlined by Whitney Cummings has averaged a 2.9 A18-49 for its first two weeks. So far, NBC has not indicated if its third new sitcom, Free Agents will receive a full-season order or not.
EW Scripps Co. is purchasing the nine TV station group from McGraw-Hill for $212 million in cash. The station group includes ABC affiliates KMGH/Denver, WRTV/Indianapolis, KGTV/San Diego and KERO/Bakersfield, in addition to low power Azteca America affiliates in five cities: San Diego, Bakersfield, Denver, Fort Collins and Colorado Springs. The transaction gives Scripps more ABC affiliates to add to its portfolio and according to Scripps’ management all stations are in growing markets. Last year, the nine stations pulled in $97 million in revenue.
The producers of FOX’s The Simpsons, currently in its 23rd season, and the show’s voice actors are involved in a negotiations impasse concerning future episodes of the animated comedy beyond this present season. 20th Century Fox Television, the production company behind The Simpsons has asked the voice actors to take a 45% pay cut to renew their contracts for more seasons. FOX has not released a statement regarding the situation, though 20th Century Fox TV did make this statement:
- “23 seasons in, The Simpsons is as creatively vibrant as ever and beloved by millions around the world. We believe this brilliant series can and should continue, but we cannot produce future seasons under its current financial model. We are hopeful that we can reach an agreement with the voice cast that allows The Simpsons to go on entertaining audiences with original episodes for many years to come.”

After the Runway is produced by The Weinstein Company and Bunim-Murray Productions.

CYN‘s MIPCOM 2011 – Importing and Exporting: US television content providers have been very successful at exporting our series around the world. They arrive in a new country, and are played either in English, English with subtitles, or they’re dubbed. Well done. We’ve also exported entire networks – the most recent including A+E Networks’ HISTORY launching in India on October 9th (with the rest of the A+E Networks to follow), Sundance Channel Global launching in Malaysia, Food Network Asia going to Indonesia. What we haven’t been nearly as successful at is importing shows from other countries. Yes, in the last five or so years we’ve gotten much better at importing formats, but not shows (of course, there are exceptions with a few children shows, series from the UK running on PBS, and anything from Sweden especially if it includes a girl and a tattoo). This has been a topic of discussion this week at MIPCOM and the musings why this seems to be the case, are varied. Will internationally produced programs be irrelevant to American audiences? Are we “internationally resistant”? Do we think they’ll all be historic costume pieces? Are we just snobs? Is there a concern if we import too much internationally produced programming, we will disenfranchise the US based producers of content? None of those sounds like a reasonable answer to the question. So what is the answer? And here’s another interesting development. Zephyr Media Group out of Chicago and headed up by Dan Zephyr, is launching a new network in the US — all-internationally produced English language programming in June, called Vibrant TV. Targeting a general audience with drama, comedy, sports, films, docs, children’s shows, etc., Vibrant TV will launch in 15-22 million homes (cable/satellite/IPTV/mobile). If we really are “internationally resistant”, can a network like Vibrant be vibrant in the US? And if Vibrant is a success, will that open the gate for international content? All interesting questions.
