Lots of news from NBC as the network canceled its new series The Playboy Club, making it the first cancelation of the fall season.  Starting next Monday, NBC will replace The Playboy Club with encore episodes of Prime Suspect in the 10p slot and then later on October 31, the network is ready to debut its new primetime newsmagazine, Rock Center With Brian Williams in the time period. The Playboy Club premiered with a 1.6 rating among A18-49 and nearly 5.0 million total viewers and for its third episode this past Monday night, dipped to a 1.2 A18-49 rating and 3.4 million viewers.

NBC further gave full-season pickups to its new comedies Up All Night and Whitney.  Up All Night starring Christina Applegate and Will Arnett has averaged a 2.3 rating with A18-49 during its first three weeks and Whitney, headlined by Whitney Cummings has averaged a 2.9 A18-49 for its first two weeks.  So far, NBC has not indicated if its third new sitcom, Free Agents will receive a full-season order or not.

EW Scripps Co. is purchasing the nine TV station group from McGraw-Hill for $212 million in cash.  The station group includes ABC affiliates KMGH/Denver, WRTV/Indianapolis, KGTV/San Diego and KERO/Bakersfield, in addition to low power Azteca America affiliates in five cities: San Diego, Bakersfield, Denver, Fort Collins and Colorado Springs.  The transaction gives Scripps more ABC affiliates to add to its portfolio and according to Scripps’ management all stations are in growing markets.  Last year, the nine stations pulled in $97 million in revenue.

The producers of FOX’s The Simpsons, currently in its 23rd season, and the show’s voice actors are involved in a negotiations impasse concerning future episodes of the animated comedy beyond this present season.  20th Century Fox Television, the production company behind The Simpsons has asked the voice actors to take a 45% pay cut to renew their contracts for more seasons.  FOX has not released a statement regarding the situation, though 20th Century Fox TV did make this statement:

“23 seasons in, The Simpsons is as creatively vibrant as ever and beloved by millions around the world. We believe this brilliant series can and should continue, but we cannot produce future seasons under its current financial model. We are hopeful that we can reach an agreement with the voice cast that allows The Simpsons to go on entertaining audiences with original episodes for many years to come.”

It’s clean up time on The Style Network as the channel is dubbing Mondays as Makeover Monday by airing back-to-back makeover series Clean House New York and the return of How Do I Look? beginning October 17.  Clean House New York opens at 8p as top New York designers and former HGTV Design Star competitors Nina Ferrer and Michael Moeller as hosts clean up the messiest abodes in the Big Apple.  Following at 9p, Jennie Mai is back as host of a new How Do I Look? Worst Dressed in America special and new episodes of the fashion makeover series will start October 24 at 9p.

Lifetime is placing two of its fashion-themed reality series on Thursday nights with the addition of Project Runway All Stars and Project Accessory beginning November 3.  Project Runway All Stars showcases 13 of the most talented and memorable designers as they compete in front of a new judges panel consisting of Isaac Mizrahi and Georgia Chapman along with Marie Claire Editor-in-Chief Joanna Coles as their mentor.  Supermodel Angela Lindvall serves as host of the series which bows November 3 at 9p.  Project Runway All Stars is produced by The Weinstein Company and Bunim-Murray Productions.  Following at 10p, new series Project Accessory launches hosted by actress/model Molly Sims.  Twelve designers will compete and showcase their unique creations for accessories and show viewers how to use them to transform outfits.  Project Accessory is from The Weinstein Company and Good Bye Pictures.  Further, Lifetime has ordered four more half-hour episodes of After the Runway, the companion series to Project Runway.  After the Runway debuts this Thursday at 1030p directly after Project Runway and will air in this pattern for the remainder of Project Runway’s ninth season.  After the Runway is produced by The Weinstein Company and Bunim-Murray Productions.

Following in the footsteps of a house-call making, old-fashioned veterinarian, Nat Geo WILD introduces viewers to Dr. Jan Pol in the new series The Incredible Dr. Pol premiering October 29 at 9p and 10p.  Dr. Pol, considered a local legend, covers the rural regions of Michigan caring for family pets of all kinds to large livestock animals on farms including the random reindeer.  After the series premieres on October 29, The Incredible Dr. Pol will air at 10p starting November 5.  SUPER! ALRIGHT! produces the series for Nat Geo WILD.

Summer replacement talk show series The Five is being picked up by Fox News for the daily 5p time slot.  Fox News added The Five as a temporary replacement show after Glenn Beck left the network.  Fox hosts such as Greg Gutfeld and Eric Bolling lead the conversation with four other rotating co-hosts that will include Kimberly Guilfoyle, Dana Perino, Bob Beckel, Juan Williams and Andrea Tantaros.

A sophomore season is on the docket for the Investigation Discovery series I Married A Mobster.  The network gave the series a 13-episode order and slated the second season to premiere next year.  Kaufman Films produces the series for Investigation Discovery.

According to TiVo Second-by-second Stop Watch data, the top 5 most time-shifted new fall broadcast series for the first week of the new season (September 19-25, 2011) include: The CW’s Ringer at 83.9%; FOX’s New Girl at 77.4%; CBS’ Person of Interest at 73.8%; NBC’s Up All Night at 73.5%; and CBS’ Unforgettable at 73.1%.

MIPCOM 2011 News:

Canadian drama series The Listener was acquired by ION Television from Shaftesbury Films.  The Listener ran on NBC in the US for a short time in 2009.  ION Television picked up the first two seasons of the drama and plans on airing it in 2012 with an option for future seasons.  The Listeners airs in Canada on CTV and Bravo! and internationally through Fox International Channels and is currently in production on its third season.

CYN‘s MIPCOM 2011Importing and Exporting:  US television content providers have been very successful at exporting our series around the world.  They arrive in a new country, and are played either in English, English with subtitles, or they’re dubbed.  Well done.  We’ve also exported entire networks – the most recent including A+E Networks’ HISTORY launching in India on October 9th (with the rest of the A+E Networks to follow), Sundance Channel Global launching in Malaysia, Food Network Asia going to Indonesia.  What we haven’t been nearly as successful at is importing shows from other countries.   Yes, in the last five or so years we’ve gotten much better at importing formats, but not shows (of course, there are exceptions with a few children shows, series from the UK running on PBS, and anything from Sweden especially if it includes a girl and a tattoo). This has been a topic of discussion this week at MIPCOM and the musings why this seems to be the case, are varied.  Will internationally produced programs be irrelevant to American audiences?  Are we “internationally resistant”?  Do we think they’ll all be historic costume pieces? Are we just snobs? Is there a concern if we import too much internationally produced programming, we will disenfranchise the US based producers of content?  None of those sounds like a reasonable answer to the question.  So what is the answer?   And here’s another interesting development.  Zephyr Media Group out of Chicago and headed up by Dan Zephyr, is launching a new network in the US — all-internationally produced English language programming in June, called Vibrant TV.  Targeting a general audience with drama, comedy, sports, films, docs, children’s shows, etc., Vibrant TV will launch in 15-22 million homes (cable/satellite/IPTV/mobile).  If we really are “internationally resistant”, can a network like Vibrant be vibrant in the US? And if Vibrant is a success, will that open the gate for international content? All interesting questions.

Sony Movie Channel is offering a new streaming service with Sony Movie Channel Everywhere available to DirecTV and Dish Network customers.  DirecTV and Dish Network customers can stream uncut and uninterrupted films from the studio’s library comprising more than 3,500 titles.

Oxygen Media approved a trio of new reality series:

  • The Next Big Thing (wt) developed and produced by BBC Worldwide Productions follows New York star-maker and music coach Trapper Felides as he trains a group of performers for their big break into show business.  The series is also produced by Omelette Bar Productions.
  • Brooklyn Crew invites viewers to the close-knit community of Bay Ridge in Brooklyn, NY and into the lives of two lifelong groups of friends who have been ripped apart by jealousy, rivalry and a mysterious betrayal.  The docu-series, shot in documentary style is produced by Ish Entertainment.
  • Tanisha Gets Married (wt) is a docu-series centered on former Bad Girls Club star and current host of Love Games show, Tanisha Thomas as she prepares for her over-the-top wedding.  The series is from 495 Productions.

Lifetime’s Drop Dead Diva elevated Lex Medlin to series regular for the show’s fourth season scheduled to debut next year, per THR.  Medlin plays Judge Owen French and Jane’s boyfriend and appeared in four episodes of the series’ third season.
