It’s countdown to launch for Revolt. CEO Keith Clinkscales, who will be sharing the buzzed-about net’s strategy for drawing Millennials at the Cynopsis Future TV Summit (http://www.cynopsisfuturetvsummit.com/) on October 17 in New York City, says music is the lure.
Cynopsis: What is Revolt offering the 18-34 audience it’s targeting?
Clinkscales: Music is the currency of these viewers. We’ll give them an active knowledge of what’s going on, with access to music all the time.
Cynopisis: Revolt put out a call for talent on YouTube. Have you discovered anyone yet?
Clinkscales: Yes, we have. Millennials are quite comfortable being the star – they know they’re just one tweet away.
Revolt debuts Monday, October 21.

~ IN THE NEWS ~

Pulitzer Prize-winning conservative columnist George Will left his long-time spot at ABC News to join Fox News Channel as a commentator. Will had been a panelist on ABC’s This Week since 1981. An ABC spokesperson told HuffPost the relocation of This Week from Washington to New York to accommodate This Week host and GMA anchor George Stephanopoulos contributed to D.C.-based Will’s decision.

Scripps Family Networks channel GAC is rebranding. “The reimagined Great American Country marks a natural evolution for what was previously known as GAC,” said Burton Jablin, president of Scripps Nets. “Think of it as a love letter to America, with heart and soul.” Living up to the net’s name, a new red logo, inspired by the American flag, was also introduced.

Disney XD is launching programming stunt “Pranksgiving” on Monday November 4. NBA players will prank the net’s stars; starting Monday, October 21, fans can go to DisneyXD.com/Crash and vote for which stars get tricked. Authenticated Watch Disney XD users will also get early access to new show episodes.

The first-ever YouTube Music Awards will be presented in NYC on Sunday, November 3, and livestreamed globally. Nominees will be determined by YouTube data such as views, then voted on by fans. Scheduled performers include Lady Gaga and Eminem; exclusive title sponsor Kia will be featured during the show.

Big Freedia: Queen of Bounce, premiering on music net Fuse tonight, explores the New Orleans hip hop scene known as “bounce.” Freedia – who calls herself “a very unique personality” – tells Cynopsis, “This is a special music and a special culture that been around for years in a very special city. And now the world gets to see it all.” Docuseries debuts at 11p.

Tr3S, the Viacom net targeting Hispanic households, has partnered with Pepsi to offer fans a chance to win a backstage pass to a 3BALLMTY concert. “Pepsi is focused on bringing the excitement of now to Hispanic consumers in an authentic, culturally relevant way,” explained Pepsi’s Senior Director, Media and Digital Strategy Chad Stubbs.

~ COMING UP ~

Destination America explores the dark side of the paranormal world in When Ghosts Attack, promising first-person stories of “soul-sucking torment.” Series debuts Sunday, October 20 at 10p.

Frugality is rewarded on new Myx TV reality competition Cheap Date. “It’s not about how cheap you can be,” said EP George Chung, “but how creative you can get on a small budget.” The net’s first original dating series premieres Monday, October 14 at 8p, and will be available for VOD streaming on Myx’s web site the next day.

The clock is ticking… Cynopsis Future TV Summit – Content Innovation & Next Generation Advertising Models is October 17 in NYC. This 360-degree, in-depth look at TV’s opportunities and challenges at this critical moment in media, from the perspective of sellers, advertisers and content creators, is just two weeks away! ~ PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT ~

ABC breathed life into comedy Beverly Kills, about a woman who retires from the mob. The Small Dog Picture Co. production nabbed a script-plus-penalty order from the net.

IFC has greenlit Garfunkel & Oates, starring Riki Lindhome (Gilmore Girls) and Kate Micucci (Raising Hope) and produced by Abominable Pictures, about the misadventures of a comedy/folk duo. The net also ordered a pilot presentation of American Storage from Dakota Pictures, about a storage facility employee who befriends a man living in one of the units.

~ DISTRIBUTION & CARRIAGE ~

Dish Network and Disney dodged a blackout – for now – with a short-term extension to their 2005 deal that expired Monday. At risk were cable nets including ESPN, Disney Channel and ABC Family, and ABC-owned stations in eight markets, including New York, Los Angeles and Chicago. Dish chairman Charlie Ergen has told investors he would operate without Disney channels if the price is too high.

Dish customers counting on Media General‘s 18 stations in 10 states weren’t so lucky – a carriage fee dispute left about a million homes affected, starting Tuesday morning. The companies’ retrans agreement expired in June, but Media General had extended negotiations for 90 days.

Meanwhile, Cable One announced Tuesday that it had dropped CNN, CNN en Espanol, CNN Headline News, Turner Classic Movies, TruTV and Boomerang from its lineup, after failing to strike a new deal with Turner. The cabler, which reaches about 730,000 customers, tried to negotiate a separate deal to keep TBS, TNT and the Cartoon Network, but all Turner programming went dark.

Business channel CNBC nabbed off-network cable rights to ABC‘s Shark Tank. Citing the “practical knowledge and aspirational theme” of the business reality show, CNBC CEO and president Mark Hoffman called it “pitch perfect for CNBC at night.” Show launches its cable run January 2014.

Outside Television, the adventure lifestyle net, has signed a distribution deal with Cox Communications. Outside has already inked pacts with Comcast Xfinity and the National Cable Television Cooperative, making it available in 35 of Nielsen’s 50 largest markets.

Echo Bridge announced it’s distributing health and wellness series Healing Quest. The show, airing on over 100 PBS stations, is in its eleventh season in production.

~ INTERNATIONAL HAPPENINGS ~

The Face‘s U.K. ratings aren’t looking too pretty. According to early numbers, the modeling competition, which airs on Oxygen Stateside, drew 132,000 viewers Monday night for Sky Living net, a .6 market share.

~ RATINGS ~

A pair of freshman series scored high grades from Nielsen Monday night. The second outing of NBC‘s The Blacklist drew a 3.3/9 rating in A18-49, making it the evening’s top scripted show. The third ep of Fox‘s Sleepy Hollow averaged a solid 3.0/8 in A18-49, down only 3 percent from last week. CBS‘s Hostages didn’t fare as well on its second appearance, with a 1.5/4 rating in the demo – but it did get a 50 percent gain in A18-49 in Live+3 from its premiere. Fox warhorse Bones was the only series to gain week to week. At 2.2/6 the show, in its ninth season, was up 16 percent.

NBC was the sole net to rise year-to-year in both A18-49 (up 7 percent) and total viewers (up 19 percent) during premiere week. ABC was up 5 percent in the young demo, but down 4 percent in total viewers. CBS was down 8 percent in A18-49 and 3 percent in total viewers, while Fox dropped 15 percent A18-49 and 13 percent in total viewers.

Third quarter was the charm for some nets. 3Q results were good news to Discovery Channel, which boasted its best 3Q numbers in net history among M25-54, and was the top network in television among M18-49 the week of August 5 (thank you, Shark Week). OWN also touted a record-high quarter, with double digit growth versus 2Q (up 31 percent W25-54 and up 35 percent in total viewers).

Destination America‘s A Haunting debut on Sunday ranked as the net’s best premiere ever of an original series among P18-49 (184K) and W25-54 (136K).
