Nothing’s more American these days than baseball, hot dogs, apple pie and carriage disputes. Over three million Cablevision subscribers are not going to be able to tune into the World Series tonight as its dispute with Fox stretches into extra innings – despite pleadings from the FCC, consumer groups and industry leaders. (Comcast for one would not like to see the dispute scuttle its pending merger with NBC.) The latest chapter in the drama surfaced with a report in the NY Daily News yesterday. It seems a Cablevision rep was taped telling a customer which websites he could visit to illegally view the games online. The two sides have not met to discuss a new deal since last Thursday.
 

~ MULTIPLATFORM CONTENT NEWS ~

 
Lifetime has completed an integration with social TV app Miso, enabling viewers to check in and receive badges from the destination site for new show The Fairy Jobmother, debuting Oct. 28.  The network is also utilizing 2D barcode ad platform JAGTAG to promote the premiere. Mobile users can scan tags featured in various print and online publications and big city subways and bus shelters to receive job-hunting tips and tune-in reminders.
 
Discovery Channel‘s new Storm Chasers site is asking fans to log on Wed. night to the Tornado Reports section to report their own tornado experiences and rate existing photos, videos & stories. Log on to the interactive map via Facebook to share your experiences of actual twisters.
 

~ INNOVATORS & START-UPS ~

 
Here’s a way to give a monetized life to a screenplay: the Brothers McMullen director Edward Burns has released a $7.99 electronic version of the screenplay for the feature Nice Guy Johnny using Amazon‘s Whispersync and CreateSpace platforms enabling it to be read on a Kindle, iPad, iPod Touch, iPhone, Mac, PC, BlackBerry and Android-based device. Burns is offering various content from the film in a variety of digital packages – 20 bucks gets you the DVD or digital download and an MP3 of the soundtrack.
 
Austin, TX-based crowdsourced community film site MovieHatch is asking users to vote for which movies they’d like to see made. Users rate trailers and pitches by the star system with the winning scripts being forwarded to a panel of Hollywood pros for consideration. Voting for the first batch of projects ends Dec. 5.

Google’s AdMob unit announced the launch of several new interactive video and interstitial ad units for Android devices across its network. Since the launch of its Ad unit for the iPhone in Nov. 2009, AdMob says it has run over 120 video and interactive interstitial campaigns worldwide for clients such as Universal Pictures, Best Buy and Seattle’s Best Coffee. 
 
Spoken news digitizer Critical Mention has signed 50 of the top US radio stations to its broadcast intelligence platform, enabling brands to monitor exactly when, where and how they are being talked about across radio programming.
 

~ TECHNOLOGY DEALS, MERGERS AND SKIRMISHES ~

 
The Obama administration has formed a subcommittee from several government bodies to advise the White House on regulatory and legislative issues regarding the internet, per the Washington Post. The subcommittee will include members of several federal agencies including Commerce, Justice, Homeland Security and State.
 

~ TRENDS, RESEARCH, ETC.  ~

 
Once again, the WSJ was the only major paper to report a significant boost in circulation with just over 2 million subscribers overall and 450k digital subs, according to a biannual report from the Audit Bureau of Circulations. Gannett’s USA Today and the NYTimes remained second and third overall, with a weekly circulation of 1.8 million (down 3.6%) and 877k (down 5.5%), respectively. Predictably, the largest drop among the nation’s top 25 papers was at Cablevision’s Newsday, falling 11.8% over the last 6 months through Sept. 30, one of 3 papers to post declines of over 10%. The publisher erected a paywall last year and tried to bundle newspaper and cable subscriptions.

The total mobile games market is expected to reach nearly $10bn worldwide by 2014, according to a new report from Futuresource Consulting, with Apple’s App Store alone generating $1.7 bn on games for the iPhone and iPod Touch.

Another connected TV media center set-top box hit Best Buy on Tues., the $200 WD TV Live Hub from hard drive specialist Western Digital. It features HDMI output, an optional Wi-Fi adapter and the ability to download and store premium content for later viewing including podcasts from CNN, NBC, MTV and ESPN. The unit also integrates with Facebook, Netflix, YouTube and Pandora.
 
Amazon.com launched a brand new portal for iPad users, designed to take advantage of the device’s large screen multi-touch interface.
 
Rock Software released a new free iPad app enabling live viewing of all 14 Championship races at the 2010 Breeders Cup. The app’s Video Vault give you access to every Breeders’ Cup World Championship race ever run (1984-2009).
 

~ EXECUTIVE MOVES ~

 
Israel-based content management firm RRsat Global Communications Network Ltd. has hired Meidad Katz as VP/Engineering and Professional Services and promoted Ziv Mor to VP/Business Development, which will be added to his responsibilities as Chief Technology Officer.
 
Digital news delivery system provider Bitcentral has named Rick Young as its new Director of Business Development. He will be based in Atlanta.
 

~ WEBSITE OF THE DAY ~

 
Even without a valid business model in place, multichannel video providers are caught up in their own digital race to control access to the content their subscribers pay for on as many platforms as possible. Cable has its hands full trying to compete with rivals such as Dish Network, which added Turner to its online offerings last week and is continuing to leverage its Sling subsidiary to roll out cool features and devices. Comcast Interactive Media removed the beta tag from its XfinityTV, giving Comcast customers access to an increasing selection of full-length shows and movies from participating broadcast and cable networks they subscribe to from any ISP. There’s a huge selection – 21.2k shows and over 2,000 movies to be exact – with many in HD. But you still can’t always find what you’re looking for as some networks hold back their best assets. (For instance, the only AMC full-length episodes currently available are from last year’s miniseries The Prisoner, and the most recent episode from FX‘s biker gang drama Sons of Anarchy aired more than a month ago.) The new “My TV” feature allows you to schedule your DVR remotely, prioritize DVR TV series and keep “Watchlists” that are updated when new episodes come online. The company is also working on a recommendation engine and preparing to roll out the iPad viewing app that Brian Roberts showed off at the cable show next month, with full episodes set to stream to it by the end of the year. It may seem a losing battle to convince web savvy users not to cut their subscriptions with all the premium stuff now available to stream – a Sandvine report cited by CNET over the weekend claimed that Netflix is now responsible for 20% of the web’s downstream traffic during peak times. But seamless accessibility, elegant UI and enhanced functionality will at least help the cause.
