Cynopsis: Sports
10/26/11
Good morning. It’s Wednesday, October 26, 2011, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.
It’s official. After years without a race on American soil, there will now be two Formula One races on US turf as of 2013. The newest race, joining Austin which will begin next year, will be held in New Jersey and called the Formula One Grand Prix of America and run on public streets as part of a 3.2 mile circuit between Weehawken and West New York. Speaking at the conference were Gov. Chris Christie; as well as the mayors of the two cities and Leo Hindery Jr., who founded the YES regional sports network and drove investment for the race.
It’s official, part two. Connecticut Governor Dannel P. Malloy announced that the NBC Sports Group will become the fourth company to take advantage of the state’s “First Five” economic development program, and will shift operations to the area to take advantage of the tax breaks being offered. As a result, NBC Sports Group will consolidate much of its northeast operations, as well as its existing Connecticut teams, to new studios and offices located in the former Clairol factory in Stamford. The project is set to start in September 2012, and the 32-acre site will eventually become home to NBC Sports, NBC Olympics, NBC Sports Digital, VERSUS as well as the Comcast Sports Management Group, which oversees the 14 regional networks. The NBC Sports Group will also develop studios at the location to house the company’s growing need for studio content. In addition, as part of its 10-year partnership with the NHL, the NBC Sports Group will build a state-of-the-art studio for NHL Network that will house most of the network’s staff.
The Big 12 appears set to take away another key piece of the Big East, with a multitude of publications reporting that the league will invite West Virginia to join the conference. Reports differ, however, as to the timing of the invitation and whether or not it will depend on Missouri’s future. Nevertheless, sources confirmed the decision to outlets ranging from The New York Times to ESPN to the AP. The conference is also looking into developing a Big 12 Network, similar to the Big Ten and the Pac-12 by utilizing its schools third-tier television rights, although not every school would participate in the platform.
Meanwhile, The New York Daily News shot down a report that a depleted Big East would meet with commissioners from the Mountain West and Conference USA to discuss creating a mega-conference. The Las Vegas Review-Journal reported that the meeting will happen this week with the idea of creating one 28- to 32-football team super conference to try to gain automatic Bowl Championship Series status. The Big East now boasts automatic BCS status, but could lose it after 2013, largely due to the recent departures of three universities as well as West Virginia.
Nearly 20 million people (2+) watched Game 5 of the World Series on Monday on FOX, in which the Texas Rangers beat the St. Louis Cardinals, according to fast national rating released by Nielsen. The game delivered an 8.8/14 household rating/share (14.3 million viewers), which held even with last year’s World Series Game 5 clinching victory. The rating also gave FOX to a 9% rise among Men 18-34 and Adults 18-34 and a 2% gain for Men 18-49. Through five games, the 2011 World Series on FOX is averaging an 8.3/14 (13.7 million viewers), down 1% from last year. Top markets included St. Louis with a 46.9/64 followed by Dallas which recorded a 40.0/58. Game 6 takes place tonight on FOX beginning at 7:30p.
MLB Network is shoring up its weekday programming slate for the offseason. The channel is set to premiere its first-ever analytics-based studio show dubbed Clubhouse Confidential, with Brian Kenny on deck to host. The series will premiere on Monday, Nov. 7 at 5:30p to coincide with the return of Hot Stove and Intentional Talk on Oct. 31. The series will “serve as an open forum to discuss and debate the day’s news and moves using modern statistical research and value projection,” according to the network. In addition, the network announced that it will televise all five games of the 2011 Taiwan All-Star Series from November 1-6. Greg Amsinger and Larry Bowa will call the games. The first game of the series will air on MLB Network on Tuesday, Nov. 1 at 9:00p.
Gus Johnson is scheduled to call nearly 30 men’s basketball games this season, according to BTN, in his fourth basketball season with the network. Games will include the network’s four Big Ten Men’s Basketball Tournament games, as well as rivalry games such as Indiana-Purdue. Johnson is scheduled to make an appearance on most of the BTN Super Wednesday doubleheaders throughout the regular season, and will team with Shon Morris during BTN telecasts of the Big Ten Men’s Basketball Tournament in Indianapolis. The network will carry four tournament games for the first time as the tournament bracket expands to include Nebraska. BTN will televise the first two games on Thursday and both Friday night quarterfinals. On the women’s side, BTN will televise approximately 60 games, including 38 regular season conference matchups and 10 Big Ten Women’s Basketball Tournament games.
BTN has also locked in its college football selections for Nov. 5, opting to televise Indiana/Ohio State and Minnesota/Michigan State at noon. Northwestern/Nebraska will kick off at 3:30p.
SPEED’s coverage of the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series continues to climb with Saturday’s race from Talladega Superspeedway scoring a 1.12, up 6% over last year. The race was also up 3% among Men 25-54 and 26% among M18-49 over the 2010 Talladega event. The race finished as the second-highest NCWTS race of the season on SPEED to-date.
MSG Network is set to celebrate the New York Rangers home opener, marking the first sports event held in the Madison Square Garden Arena with the reopening of The Garden after the first phase of the three-year transformation project. The game will take place on October 27 with a full day of Rangers programming on the network, followed by a special “blue carpet” show before the game and the premiere of the original series Beginnings immediately after the post-game show.
NHL Network and NHL.com are set to debut a new weekly series called Making of a Royal, rolling out the show every Monday on NHL Network’s NHL Live and NHL on the Fly. The weekly vignettes will offer a look behind the scenes at the Long Island Royals – an Under-16 AAA hockey team that happens to be coached by Hockey Hall of Famer Pat LaFontaine. In addition, the series will also run on NHL.com and be accompanied with a blog written by LaFontaine as well as occasional guest bloggers. Installments will come together through two NHL Network specials with the first set to air on February 19.
NASCAR, Stewart-Haas Racing and Kraft Foods cooked up an extended agreement that will keep Kraft products as the Official Cookie (Oreo, Nilla and Nutter Butter) and Cracker (Ritz and Wheat Thins) of NASCAR. The Oreo and Ritz brands would also continue as Associate Sponsors of Stewart-Haas Racing teammates Tony Stewart and Ryan Newman, respectively, in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series. Kraft Foods will maintain its long tradition of creating NASCAR-themed packages of Oreo cookies and Ritz crackers as part of a national consumer sweepstakes. In addition, for the first time next year, Ritz will host a national digital and social media sweepstakes on its Facebook page where a fan will have the chance to win a prize package to go to the 2012 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Awards Ceremony.
FIFA locked in its own deal, extending its relationship with Anheuser-Busch InBev to make Budweiser the Official Beer sponsor for the 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia and the 2022 FIFA World Cup Qatar. The sponsorship agreement gives Anheuser-Busch InBev the global sponsorship rights for all editions of the FIFA World Cup and the FIFA Confederations Cup up to and including the 2022 edition of the tournament. Anheuser-Busch InBev will also have the opportunity to leverage its slate of beers by extending local sponsorship rights to its leading brands in selected football markets, including, but not limited to Brahma (Brazil), Hasseroder (Germany), Jupiler (Belgium and the Netherlands), Quilmes (Argentina) and Harbin (China).
ESPN has hired Michael Bayle to serve as Senior Vice President and General Manager of ESPN Mobile. The former Yahoo! and Microsoft executive will now develop and manage all aspects of ESPN’s mobile strategy and execution, including content production, programming and publishing on every ESPN Mobile platform. Bayle recently served as Vice President of Monetization and Marketing at Amobee.
CBSSports.com is now showcasing episode two of the 10-week web series leading up to the SHOWTIME and CBS co-produced documentary film A Game of Honor. The short-form online series is narrated by Jim Nantz, and the new episode, called So You Want to Go to West Point?, features the first day of school at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point.
The Main Event
Can the Rangers close out the series or will there be a Game 7? World Series on FOX at 8p.
