Good morning. It’s Wednesday, October 23, 2013, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.
Golf Channel is slicing through its breaks with Playing Through, a new split-screen commercial break that is designed to offer continuous coverage of tournament action while showcasing advertisers in a “unique and compelling format.” The initiative will be implemented during the European Tour’s Final Series this week during the final two hours of Golf Channel’s tournament coverage of the BMW Masters, which will include eight Playing Through breaks and four traditional commercial breaks. In addition to the this week’s BMW Masters, Playing Through will be instituted at all four of the European Tour’s Final Series events including WGC-HSBC Champions, the Turkish Airlines Open presented by the Ministry of Tourism and Cultureand the DP World Tour Championship, Dubai.
On the Air
Sage Steele is officially set to become the new host of NBA Countdown, joining Doug Collins, Jalen Rose and Bill Simmons on the Friday and Sunday editions of the show on ESPN and ABC. The Countdown quartet will make its debut on Friday, Nov. 1, at 7p on ESPN. Meanwhile, Steele will continue to appear on SportsCenter and will also contribute to ESPN’s on-site NBA coverage during the NBA Finals. The Wednesday NBA Countdown team will consist of Rose, Doris Burke and Avery Johnson and debut Nov. 13.
Twentieth Century Fox Consumer Products is launching a “first-of-its-kind” campaign that will celebrate 25 years of The Simpsons via soccer. The campaign will see a line of branded merchandise created in conjunction with acclaimed international soccer teams, from FC Barcelona to Sport Club Corinthians, that will be made available to consumers in 2014 ahead of the World Cup. In addition, an episode of The Simpsons inspired by the FIFA World Cup has been slated to run in March 2014 on FOX and dubbed You Don’t Have to Live Like a Referee. The special will feature Homer and his recruitment as a FIFA World Cup referee, after Lisa praises his integrity in a Springfield Elementary speech contest held on the youth soccer field.
Despite poor starts by both the Giants and Vikings, this week’s Monday Night Football telecast helped ESPN win the night among all networks in key male and adult demos. The game drew a 8.4 rating, representing an average of 9,711,000 households and 13,243,000 viewers, according to Nielsen. That is off slightly from the season average of 8.5 for the games this year. In Minneapolis, the game delivered a 12.3 rating on ESPN and a 38.0 on WCCO-CBS, for a combined 50.3 rating in the market. In New York, the game delivered a 10.1 rating on ESPN and a 5.6 on WPIX-CW, for a combined 15.7 rating in the market.
NBC reports that its Sunday Night Football franchise is averaging 22.7 million viewers, which would mark the best seven-week start for an NFL primetime package in 17 years. That number is also up 5% from last year. Sunday’s Colts/Broncos game averaged 26.9 million viewers (15.9 HH rating), ranking as the most-watched October NFL primetime telecast in 21 years. The game also drew NBC Sports Live Extra’s best stream ever in total uniques (356,403), total visits (382,548) and total minutes (19,588,823) for a non-Super Bowl NFL game.
MLB Network’s coverage of the 2013 World Series hits the road this week as MLB Tonight and Intentional Talk will run live every day from the studio and each World Series ballpark with previews, analysis and highlights. Two-hour editions of MLB Tonight are running live at 3p and 6p on the day of each game, plus a live one-hour recap show after every game.
CBS Sports Network will wrap up the 20th season of Professional Bull Riders with the crowning of the 2013 World Champion from Wednesday, October 23 – Sunday, October 27. The 2013 PBR World Champion will be crowned live on CBS Sports Network on Sunday, Oct. 27 at 2:30p. Craig Hummer announces, along Ty Murray, J.W. Hart, Leah Garcia and Shorty Gorham.
Universal Sports Network offers multi-platform coverage of the 2013-2014 FIS Alpine Ski World Cup season on Saturday, October 26 at 6a with a season preview show followed by live coverage from Soelden, Austria, at 6:30a of the women’s giant slalom. Live coverage continues on Sunday, October 27 at 7:30a with the men’s giant slalom. In total, the network will showcase more than 60 international alpine competitions and more than 100 hours of exclusive television coverage throughout the upcoming season, including the World Cup finals.
Reliance Industries Ltd., IMG Worldwide and Star India are teaming up to launch of the Indian Super League, a football championship in India designed to “foster local talent and feature international stars with the aim of making the game one of the country’s flagship sports and India a name to reckon with in the global arena.” The Indian Super League will feature eight city specific teams to start with and will tap the interest among the country’s young population and will kick-off January 18, 2014 and will run through March 2014, with a second window planned in the year.
Aston Villa Football Club and Time Warner Cable Sports reached agreements to bring the Aston Villa Weekly broadcast to Time Warner Cable SportsNet and Time Warner Cable Deportes, making them the only current American outlet for Aston Villa programming. The two-year agreement will see the three-hour series spotlight all of Villa’s Barclays Premier League games.

Major League Baseball is once again lining up a slate of community games ahead of the World Series, marking the fifth consecutive year it will use the event to raise awareness causes. Tonight, for Game 1, the league will honor veterans and military families, as well as emphasizing baseball’s support of the military through Welcome Back Veterans. Game 2 on Thursday will spotlight the Boys & Girls Clubs of America and Habitat for Humanity. Hamm and her husband, Nomar Garciaparra, will promote affordable home solar solutions via radio advertisements and signage at youth soccer tournaments in key solar energy markets, including California and New York.
At this fall’s NASCAR Sprint Cup race in Texas, NASCAR star Greg Biffle will be drive a No. 16 3M Ford Fusion featuring the 3M Hire Our Heroes program. The paint scheme was created by legendary car designer Chip Foose and is designed to showcase “the respect of the saluting soldier flanked by the stars and stripes, with the stripes down the side creating a fast, sleek look for the car.”

September gave espnW.com a triple-digit bump in year-over-year growth in unique visitors with a double-digit spike in page views. The redesigned site delivered an average time spent of 9.02 minutes. Monthly unique visitors were up 139% to 3,341,065 while page views grew 41% to 18,701,091.
WWE Superstar Chris Jericho is launching a new series of webisodes about the wrestler. The series, from Insight Productions and in association with Shaw Media, is dubbed But I’m Chris Jericho!, and is a scripted comedy web series that sees Jericho playing a fictionalized version of himself as he tries to make it as an actor.
