Cynopsis: Kids!

10/21/09

Good morning. It’s Wednesday, October 21, 2009, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

The Harlem Globetrotters will make their way down the court to a new animated TV series with the help of Cookie Jar Group, which has been tapped as the exclusive global licensing agent and kids TV program development partner for the Harlem Globetrotters.  Cookie Jar Entertainment develops animated programming for the brand, while Copyright Promotions Licensing Group (CPLG), Cookie Jar’s licensing arm, will create a licensing program for the Globetrotters targeting those of us that grew up watching the group with a range of products (vintage apparel, collectibles) as well as a line for young fans (sporting goods, trading cards, interactive games).  For those of you trying to figure this out, it has been 39 years since Hanna-Barbera’s animated series, The Harlem Globetrotters, premiered on CBS, where it ran from 1970-72.  Animated versions of The Harlem Globetrotters also appeared in the 1970s on The New Scooby-Doo Movies and another Hanna-Barbera series called The Super Globetrotters.

Steven Spielberg will remain as an exclusive creative consultant to Universal Studios theme parks through at least 2017, under a new extension of a deal originally inked 22 years ago, putting off a potential payout to Spielberg and protection from a credit crunch for Universal, per the WSJ.  Universal Studios is looking to restructure upwards of $1.5 billion in debt for its theme parks in Florida before April 2010.  Spielberg’s deal with Universal theme parks, which entitled him to 2% of the gross revenue in perpetuity, was set to end in summer 2010 and he could have ended his deal then – that would have meant a large payout to the director/producer.  The newly extended deal also means that Spielberg won’t be advising Disney on its theme parks, which is now home to DreamWorks.

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Screenwriter Ann Peacock (The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe) is adapting Airman for the big screen for Disney and Robert Zemeckis’ ImageMovers, per VarietyGil Kenan (City of Ember, Monster House) will direct the movie, which is based on author Eoin Colfer‘s (Artemis Fowl series, The Wish List, etc) book Airman.  The movie will be produced by Zemeckis, jack Rapke and Steve Starkey through their ImageMovers entity.

New Line picks up Amy Andelson and Emily Meyer (Step Up 3D, Naomi and Eli’s No Kiss List) a comedy pitch What Boys Want, with Selena Gomez (The Wizards of Waverly Place) attached to star and Kevin Misher to produce, according to Variety.  The comedy revolves around a teen girl that can hear what boys are thinking.  Allen Fisher of Principato-Young and Gomez’s mom, Mandy Teefey, will serve as executive producers.

MORE KIDS STUFF

Nickelodeon‘s new hour-long special, Dora the Explorer: Dora Saves the Crystal Kingdom, premieres in primetime on Sunday, November 1 at 8p.  The special will then debut on Nick Jr. (f/k/a Noggin) on Sunday, November 8 at 7p.  The network will rollout a two-minute preview and clips from the new special beginning October 26 on Nick Jr. Video.  The special will be simulcast in full on Nick Mobile.  NickJr.com will also offer games and activities to support the premiere of the special. Nickelodeon and Home Entertainment and Paramount Home Entertainment have already released Dora Saves the Crystal Kingdom on DVD, which also features two other Dora stories.  Additionally, the new feature-length DVD Dora the Explorer: Dora’s Christmas Carol Adventure releases November 3, with the companion CD title, Dora’s Christmas, available now in stores and via iTunes.

KidsCo launches its new original animated series Boo & Me, which is designed to build awareness of the importance of conservation and the environment.  Developed with Malaysia-based animators Inspidea, Boo & Me follows the adventures of Boo, a mischievous orangutan rescued from poachers and living in a nature reserve in Malaysia, and his two kid pals.  In support of the series, Malaysian Airlines is airing Boo & Me on select routes.

YTV (Canada) picks up an additional 26 episodes from season one of Toei Animation‘s series Pretty Cure.  Earlier this year YTV launched the first 26 episodes of Pretty Cure, which follows the adventures of two best friends that are also total opposites, one a top athlete and the other an honor-roll student, who are granted superhero powers to protect the Earth.
