Cynopsis: DIGITAL
10/20/10

Good morning, it’s Wednesday, October 20, 2010, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.  If you would like to read this or any other Cynopsis edition online, click here

The problem of tracking and monetizing valuable video assets across platforms has only intensified since Viacom spent millions trying to sue YouTube for unauthorized usage. Project TAXI (“track-able asset cross-platform identifier”) is the name of a new cross industry initiative designed to come up with an open standard to track and identify entertainment content and advertisements across both traditional and digital media platforms. Goals include defining terminology, simplifying accounting and improving efficiency of cross-platform media buys. The Coalition for Innovative Media Measurement (CIMM) has partnered with the ANA, the IAB, and the 4A’s on the project and engaged accounting firm Ernst & Young LLP to insure full transparency.

~ MULTIPLATFORM CONTENT NEWS ~

National Geographic Digital Media teamed with National Geographic Channel in Spain to launch a Spanish-language version of the National Geographic site localized and promoted through a partnership with leading Spanish portal Terra Networks. Native language/culture National Geographic websites also are available in Italy, Japan, China, the UK, Australia and India.

AETN Digital launched an integration with party planning site Punchbowl to form the Lifetime Moms Party Planner, a free service moms can use to plan their holiday get togethers.

Arts channel Ovation is offering a VOD preview of the Royal Opera House production of The Nutcracker, Russia’s Bolshoi Ballet production and the Casse Noisette Circus Ballet of Monte Carlo from Nov. 1, before they appear on air on Dec. 6.

~ INNOVATORS & START-UPS ~

Facebook brand marketing and management platform creator Buddy Media has raised $23 million in a Series C round led by Institutional Venture Partners and joined by existing investors Greycroft Partners, Bay Partners and Softbank Capital. The company says more than 300 companies and agencies now license its platform, which automates the process of launching a branded presence on Facebook.

Online video platform Ooyala introduced a new online payment service powered by PayPal that allows publishers to add a paywall to their video sites to charge for selected content. Entravision’s LATV site is currently testing the service.

Sorenson Media announced its Vid.vu short URL service geared specifically for professional video with advanced features including click-through counts and viewer location.

Ad network parent Goodway Group, operator of Beep! Automotive, SWAY Political, and IvyPixel, introduced a new investment fund looking to seed digital start-ups with capital of up to $250k.

Revision3 has acquired the independent YouTube series Scientific Tuesdays and will keep to host Dylan Hart’s schedule of releasing new household science tricks every Tuesday.

~ DIGITAL ADVERTISING ~

Mobile video ad network iVdopia says it has turned profitable after a record quarter in which it experienced a 400% Q/Q increase in earnings spent on video and rich media formats. The company launched an HTM5 video ad solution earlier this year, bringing pre-app video adds to iPhone and Android and HD-quality video ads to the iPad.

Gannett’s PointRoll (which experienced double digit growth itself during Q3 according to the company’s just released earning results) introduced new partnerships with DataXu and AdMeld to support the non-guaranteed display marketplace, including sell-side platforms, demand-side platforms and other real time bidding environments.

The Travel Ad Network closed on a $15 million round of series C financing led by StarVest Partners with participation by existing investors Rho Ventures and Village Ventures. The company has raised approx. $31 million to date.

~ TECHNOLOGY DEALS, MERGERS AND SKIRMISHES ~

Facebook’s latest privacy snafu has attracted attention in Washington. U.S. Reps. Edward Markey (D., Mass.), Chairman of the Energy and Environment Subcommittee, and Joe Barton (R., Texas), ranking member of the House Energy and Commerce Committee, sent Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg a letter asking for details regarding the privacy breaches uncovered by the WSJ on Monday. A total of 18 questions are asked.

The New York Times Co. reported a $4.3 million net loss on Tuesday due to declining ad and circulation revenue, but was able to report a 15% increase in digital ad sales. Overall ad revenue dropped 1% (with print falling by 5.8%,) but increases from NYTimes.com and divisions such as About.com helped stem the losses, with digital ad revenue now accounting for 27% of the overall ad pie. NYTimes is planning to launch a pay wall for NYTimes.com next year that will attempt to maintain its reach by allowing readers referred from third-party sites to access content without triggering the pay gate.

Yahoo‘s net income showed signs of recovery, as the company reported net income more than doubling to $396 million from Q3 a year ago. Revenue also jumped 2% to $1.6 billion, thanks partly to a 17% y/y increase on display ads on owned and operated sites.

~ TRENDS, RESEARCH, ETC.  ~

The Nielsen-funded Council for Research Excellence (CRE) issued a request for proposal (RFP) to industry researchers to study available research regarding new video-media usage. The objective is to review current research about video consumption on newer platforms so that the CRE can then design and execute new research into these areas. Specifically, the CRE eventually wants to explore video consumption relative to: live viewing (as a base measure); screen-size impact; HDTV; DVRs; streaming (all formats); mobile (all forms); game consoles; 3-D TV and tablet PCs, to start with.

~ GADGETS & APPS ~

Established note-taking app maker Evernote has raised $20 million in a Series C round led by Sequoia Capital. The multiplatform Evernote, which allows you to jot things down on your smartphone, synch notes on your computer and search across both, now counts 4.7 million users worldwide.

~ WEBSITE OF THE DAY ~

The day after cloud computing visionary Ray Ozzie announced he was leaving the company, Microsoft unveiled a new subscription version of Office that will reside and keep data secure online, be constantly updated and require users to pay a monthly fee to access. Office 365 (not to be confused with an online UK stationery store of the same name) will also unify additional applications including SharePoint, Exchange and Lync online and wisely support most browsers including Mozilla’s Firefox, Apple’s Safari and Google’s Chrome. Support for popular mobile platforms such as BlackBerry and iPad will mean businesses can access their data from wherever, whenever. Pricing will vary depending on the size of the company using it; larger groups will pay anywhere from $2/user per month for basic email to $27/month for a full professional version including online voicemail and video/voice conferencing. Trials of the site will be available immediately in 13 countries and Microsoft is planning a full launch across the world next year. Google Apps paved the way for cloud based office apps but Microsoft has raised the bar here – at the risk of cutting into the sales of one of its biggest moneymaking software suites.
