Despite a lag time of only 24 hours in 125 countries, within 16 hours more than half a million people had downloaded a copy of The Walking Dead season four premiere through a torrent site, reports TorrentFreak. More than 15 percent of the downloaders came from the U.S., where the AMC smash streams for free on the net’s web site.
Tina Fey and Amy Poehler have signed on to host the Golden Globes for two more years. In January, the Dick Clark Productions awards show drew a six-year-high 19.7 million viewers and a 6.4 rating in A18-49, up 28 percent from the prior year. (Asked on Tuesday about the highlight of the show, Poehler said, “Sitting on George Clooney’s lap.”) The 71st Annual Golden Globe Awards airs Sunday, January 12, 2014 at 8p.
NBCUniversal has revamped its ad sales operation, organizing it around four groups of content areas: Entertainment, Live Programming, Lifestyle and Digital Video, rather than by network. “In a world of growing fragmentation and as scale has become more and more elusive,” explained NBCU president of ad sales Linda Yaccarino, “we’ve clustered our networks to capitalize on the strength of our assets.”
Michelle Obama will make another appearance on NBC weight loss competition The Biggest Loser. The First Lady’s November visit will support a campaign encouraging people to drink more water that’s backed by sponsor Brita. Biggest Loser airs Tuesdays at 8p.
Ashton Kutcher (Two and a Half Men) tops Forbes’ annual list of the highest-paid TV actors for the second year in a row. The magazine estimates Kutcher earned $24 million between June 2012 and June 2013. Kutcher’s co-star, Jon Cryer came in second ($21 million), Ray Romano (Parenthood) third ($16 million) and Mark Harmon (NCIS) and Neil Patrick Harris (How I Met Your Mother) tied for fourth ($15 million).
The NBA and Taco Bell agreed to a multi-year expansion of their marketing partnership, including a new digital and social program called “Buzzer Beaters” featuring last-second game-winning shots, reports AdAge. Fans will be able to access clips at a Taco Bell-branded section of NBA.com. The deal also calls for the brand to be featured prominently on game telecasts.
Microsoft‘s negative ad campaign against Google appears to be working. TV ads slamming the giant search engine caused a 45 percent favorability gap in favor of Google shrinking to 5 percent, reports AdAge, citing data collected by Microsoft. “For Microsoft, it’s a win,” said Jonathan Symonds, EVP of marketing at research firm Ace Metrix.
Reelzchannel docuseries The Capones follows a branch of the notorious family tree where the drama is focused on cannelloni, not crime. The Asylum Entertainment production premieres Tuesday, January 28 at 10p.
Barbra Streisand’s hometown return is captured on Great Performances in Barbra Streisand: Back to Brooklyn. The concert special airs Friday, November 29 on PBS at 9p.
MTV docuseries Generation Cryo chronicles the journey of a 17-year-old who connects with her half-brothers and sisters via her sperm donor biological father. The Off the Fence project premieres Monday, November 25 at 10p.
The finale of The White Queen airs Saturday – and for viewers needing to catch up, Starz is airing a marathon, starting at 12 noon. Series finale airs at 9p.
Fellow Dancing with the Stars alums Jennie Garth (Beverly Hills, 90210) and Cameron Mathison (All My Children) star in ABC Family movie Holidaze, about a high-powered exec and her childhood sweetheart. HGTV greenlit three new real estate series. Flip It to Win It, from Johlt Productions, has expert flippers bidding for abandoned houses. Rent or Buy (Breakfast Anytime Inc.) tracks people weighing the big decision, and Fixer Upper (High Noon Entertainment) pairs struggling buyers with remodeling experts. “We’ve learned that viewers want to see how real homeowners or experts handle riskier real estate investments,” said Steven Lerner, SVP, programming and production at HGTV and DIY Network.
Zooey Deschanel (New Girl) has sold two comedy shows. Freelancers, written by Deschanel’s producing partner Rivka Sophia Rossi, about a disgraced lawyer who has to start over, is at Fox; Lies I Tell My Daughter, focusing on an unconventional mom, landed at NBC.
Simon Cowell‘s pulling out the big guns for U.K.’s The X Factor. In addition to Lady Gaga and Britney Spears, One Direction, Katy Perry and Robin Thicke will perform on the ITV singing competition.
The BBC is shuffling The Great British Bake Off from BBC Two to BBC One for its fifth season. “The time is absolutely right to bring the show to an even broader audience on BBC One,” said controller Charlotte Moore of the unusual move. Bake Off is currently averaging 7 million viewers and a 27.7 share.
Syfy plans a “Scare-a-thon” of six original Scare Tactics episodes on October 21, starting at 8p. Hosted by Tracy Morgan (30 Rock), the hidden camera show uses elaborate tricks to play horror hoaxes on unsuspecting victims.
Sundance Channel‘s broadcast of supernatural crime thriller The Returned premieres Thursday, October 31 at 9p.

With an assist from a two-hour battle round on The Voice, NBC notched another big win Monday night, averaging 4.0 rating in A18-49 and 13 million viewers. ABC saw hikes from last week’s ratings, with Dancing with the Stars up one tenth to 2.1 A18-49 and Castle up three tenths, to 2.2 in A18-49 and a two-year high in A18-34 with 1.7/5.
CBS‘s rejiggered We Are Men-less Monday lineup helped 2 Broke Girls, up three tenths with a 2.6/7 rating A18-49 at 8:30p, handily beating Men’s final episode in the timeslot (1.8/5). With a Big Bang Theory rerun holding a place for Mike & Molly, the net got a five percent boost in A18-49 and 12 percent in total viewers.
Fox News morning show Fox & Friends has jumped double digits with the arrival of Elisabeth Hasselback. Since the conservative former View co-host started in September, ratings have climbed 16 percent in total viewers, from 1.058 million to 1.226 million, and 22 percent in A25-54.
UniMas’ broadcast of the 2014 FIFA World Cup Qualifier match on Friday night delivered 4.6 million total viewers 2+ and 2,738,000 A18-49. Among P2+, it was the second-most viewed telecast ever on the net.
