More than 15 percent of the downloaders came from the U.S., where the AMC smash streams for free on the net’s web site.

~ IN THE NEWS ~

Tina Fey and Amy Poehler have signed on to host the Golden Globes for two more years. In January, the Dick Clark Productions awards show drew a six-year-high 19.7 million viewers and a 6.4 rating in A18-49, up 28 percent from the prior year. (Asked on Tuesday about the highlight of the show, Poehler said, “Sitting on George Clooney’s lap.”) The 71st Annual Golden Globe Awards airs Sunday, January 12, 2014 at 8p.

NBCUniversal has revamped its ad sales operation, organizing it around four groups of content areas: Entertainment, Live Programming, Lifestyle and Digital Video, rather than by network. “In a world of growing fragmentation and as scale has become more and more elusive,” explained NBCU president of ad sales Linda Yaccarino, “we’ve clustered our networks to capitalize on the strength of our assets.”

Michelle Obama will make another appearance on NBC weight loss competition The Biggest Loser. The First Lady’s November visit will support a campaign encouraging people to drink more water that’s backed by sponsor Brita. Biggest Loser airs Tuesdays at 8p.

Ashton Kutcher (Two and a Half Men) tops Forbes’ annual list of the highest-paid TV actors for the second year in a row. The magazine estimates Kutcher earned $24 million between June 2012 and June 2013. Kutcher’s co-star, Jon Cryer came in second ($21 million), Ray Romano (Parenthood) third ($16 million) and Mark Harmon (NCIS) and Neil Patrick Harris (How I Met Your Mother) tied for fourth ($15 million).

The NBA and Taco Bell agreed to a multi-year expansion of their marketing partnership, including a new digital and social program called “Buzzer Beaters” featuring last-second game-winning shots, reports AdAge. Fans will be able to access clips at a Taco Bell-branded section of NBA.com. The deal also calls for the brand to be featured prominently on game telecasts.

Microsoft‘s negative ad campaign against Google appears to be working. TV ads slamming the giant search engine caused a 45 percent favorability gap in favor of Google shrinking to 5 percent, reports AdAge, citing data collected by Microsoft. “For Microsoft, it’s a win,” said Jonathan Symonds, EVP of marketing at research firm Ace Metrix.

~ PRODUCTION AND DEVELOPMENT ~

HGTV greenlit three new real estate series. Flip It to Win It, from Johlt Productions, has expert flippers bidding for abandoned houses. Rent or Buy (Breakfast Anytime Inc.) tracks people weighing the big decision, and Fixer Upper (High Noon Entertainment) pairs struggling buyers with remodeling experts. “We’ve learned that viewers want to see how real homeowners or experts handle riskier real estate investments,” said Steven Lerner, SVP, programming and production at HGTV and DIY Network.

Zooey Deschanel (New Girl) has sold two comedy shows. Freelancers, written by Deschanel’s producing partner Rivka Sophia Rossi, about a disgraced lawyer who has to start over, is at Fox; Lies I Tell My Daughter, focusing on an unconventional mom, landed at NBC.

~ INTERNATIONAL HAPPENINGS ~

The BBC is shuffling The Great British Bake Off from BBC Two to BBC One for its fifth season. “The time is absolutely right to bring the show to an even broader audience on BBC One,” said controller Charlotte Moore of the unusual move. Bake Off is currently averaging 7 million viewers and a 27.7 share.
