Following up on the introduction of Logitech’s expensive Google TV set top, Sony unveiled its Internet TV, the first line of televisions embedded with Google TV functionality. Sony will begin selling 4 different LCD-TV sets pre-installed with apps from partners such as Netflix, the NBA, Qriocity, Pandora, CNBC, Napster, YouTube and Twitter. (The Google TV app store is not scheduled to launch until 2011.) The TVs can be controlled using an upcoming Android app or via remotes that feature a full QWERTY keyboard and an optical mouse. Look for them at Best Buy from Oct. 24, with prices ranging from $500 for a 24-inch model to $1,400 for a 46″ model. Sony will also begin selling a Google TV-embedded Blu-ray player for $400 from Oct.
Amazon likes to brag about how easy it is to read the Kindle in the sunlight and how little eyestrain it induces. Even so, given today’s lifestyles, the device and other mobile gizmos Amazon publishes to may be better suited for shorter form works. The company introduced a new 30-90 page “Kindle Single” non-fiction format, described as varying from “twice the length of a New Yorker feature” to “a few chapters of a typical book.” The idea could lead to a resurgence of essays, political tracts and treatises that have been marginalized out of existence by increased printing costs and scarcity of bookstore shelf space.
Casual gaming company Oberon Media launched its I-playTV service on EchoStar’s Dish Network, a new TV-themed game service that will bring popular casual and game show-related titles to the service that will reward prizes for top scorers. A home version of Endemol’s “Deal or No Deal” show will be available at launch with a “1 vs. 100” game planned for a later date. Dish subscribers must pay an extra $4/mo. to play.
Hearst Television has partnered with Atlanta-based LSN Mobile to deliver Hearst Television-produced local news and weather content onto enhanced mobile websites, downloadable apps and wireless carrier portals. LSN Mobile is currently delivering apps for Hearst Television’s local stations via iPhone and Android and will soon introduce BlackBerry versions of the applications.
BNI Video, a technology firm backed by Comcast, Time Warner Cable and Cisco Systems, launched a new video control system enabling cable and satellite providers to add IP-based content, search and social networking functionality through legacy set-top boxes. BNI’s software helps pay-TV providers offer like, sharing and other common interactive features while adding content from internet broadcasters that can be controlled from the headend. BNI Video’s first two products, a video control plane and a CDN manager, are available now.
Mobile and online Q&A site ChaCha has undergone an overhaul, leveraging the HTML5 video format to introduce new features include relevance-prioritized video and image archiving, multiplatform-sourced user ratings and tighter integration with Facebook, Twitter and Digg.
Digg‘s new CEO Matt Williams, a former Amazon executive, issued a mea culpa on Digg’s blog yesterday, apologizing for the “disappointing” revamp of the social news service and promising to restore features that users have missed. Many of Digg’s oldest users, who tended to control the conversation on the old site, have publicly complained that the new site diminishes their influence and have staged a revolt of sorts to get Digg to change back.
Family care search site Care.com has closed on another $20 million in funding led by New Enterprise Associates and joined by existing investors Matrix Partners and Trinity Ventures. The site, which has raised $36 million to date, features pre-screened profiles of babysitters, nannies, tutors, housekeepers and other caregivers.
Internet ad revenues are back to their old fast-growing ways, regaining double-digit growth rates during the first half of 2010, according to a new report from the IAB conducted by PwC. Display-related advertising, including banner ads, rich media, digital video and sponsorships, totaled more than $4.4 billion in the first six months of 2010, an increase of 16% from the first half of 2009. Digital video remains the fastest growing segment – up 31% so far this year over last – while search maintains the lion’s share of the overall interactive spend with $5.7 billion in revenue or 47% of the total. Pricing models continue to evolve into performance-based models, with approx. 61% of 1H 2010 revenues priced on a performance basis, (up from
the 58% reported in 1H 2009) and approx. 35% of 1H 2010 revenues priced on a CPM or impression basis, (down from the 38% reported in 1H 2009.)

Tribune may finally have found a way out of bankruptcy, announcing that it has reached a settlement with its major creditors who will receive a total of $420 million (about 33 cents on the dollar) when the company emerges out the other side of the process. The company plans to file a full reorganization plan on Friday.
Cox Media Group introduced its own crowd-based online and mobile couponing solution dubbed DealSwarm, currently looking for local business partners in Atlanta, Austin, Dayton and Seattle with plans to roll out to other major markets in 2011.
Comcast’s online video publishing platform thePlatform announced that its mpx video management system originally launched in February is out of beta. The system includes a newly designed video management console that makes it easier to ingest vast libraries of content with new features such as faceted search and blade navigation.
Negative product reviews can hurt online but positive ones that are widely seen can sure help. The highest performing user-generated product reviews on websites contained many of the same effective sales elements seen in professionally-produced TV commercials, according to a new study from ComScore ARS and Expo Communications. In fact, the rates of presence of many of these elements were greater than those typically seen in banner and rectangle display ads. Videos were scored using comScore ARS’s content assessment methodology, ARS Zipline, used as a means of quantifying ad recall and its potential to persuade consumers.
Apple‘s popular iPad tablet computer, which is already available at Best Buy and Target, will begin showing up on the shelves at Wal-Mart from Friday.
MXP4 and Push Entertainment announced a partnership that will integrate MXP4’s game-like interactive music app technology into Push Entertainment’s services for increasing fan engagement and revenue opportunities for the music industry. Artists who have utilized Push’s entertainment platform include Justin Bieber, U2 and Miley Cyrus.
Ryan FitzGerald has joined Best Boy Entertainment to lead the company’s new Interactive Media Division as VP/Interactive. Ryan was the former Executive Director of Fortune Cat Games Studio and President & CEO of Rogue Nation Studios, both based in Winnipeg, Manitoba.

Japanese mobile internet giant DeNA Co. has purchased San Francisco-based iPhone game developer Ngmoco (Topple, We City, We Rule etc.) for $300 million in cash and securities with performance targets that could add another $100 million to the deal. Ngmoco says its games have landed in the top 10 gaming titles 20 times, are played for more than 50 million minutes a day and have been downloaded more than 60 million times. Its Plus+ game network, which allows iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad users challenge each other for points and bragging rights, claims over 13 million registered users with more than 50 million “friend connections.” The deal represents a new high water mark for mobile gaming and the company is poised to grow immensely, preparing to expand its platform globally and launch on the fast-growing Android market in the coming weeks.
