An IBM study has found that 82% of chief marketing officers still rely on traditional market research in development of marketing strategies. As a matter of fact, only 26% regularly track blogs and just 40% track any form of online communication. While a few top brands are in the midst of thorough social media campaigns meant to engage customers, most CMOs are having a difficult time linking social media investment and true ROI. “The perfect solution is to serve each customer individually. The problem? There are 7 billion of them,” said one CMO of a consumer products firm in the survey that conducted face-to-face interviews with over 1,700 CMOs. For what it’s worth, 82% did acknowledge that they planned to increase social media use over the next 3-5 years.
 

~ MULTIPLATFORM CONTENT NEWS ~

 
DirecTV has launched Nomad , a device that will allow subscribers to upload DVR content for up to five mobile devices and/or computers. It will require Wi-Fi access to sync content across devices and is currently available on PCs, the iPhone and iPod Touch. The device will be available for the iPad, Mac computers and Android devices in the future. Nomad costs $149 for the equipment, with no additional monthly fees.
 
HBO Go will be available on Roku‘s internet-connected set-top boxes by the end of October. Unfortunately, as the streaming service isn’t offered on Time Warner Cable and Cablevision, this lack of availability will probably extend to the subscribers of both pay-TV holdouts.
 

~ DIGITAL ADVERTISING ~

 
McDonald’s has come out with a targeted mobile ad campaign for its Monopoly game. The fast food behemoth is running ads inside Pandora‘s iPhone app and offers consumers the chance to win some prizes, according to Mobile Marketer. When consumers tap on the banner ad in the app, they are re-directed to a page that lets them enter a promo code, which they can receive by getting some grub at McDonald’s.
 
Barilliance
, an e-commerce personalization solutions provider, is introducing its “Facebook Fan Page Personalized Product Recommendations” in order to help retailers attract more shoppers to their fan pages. The platform tailors pages to offer targeted discounts and coupons, daily/weekly deals that are automatically updated, along with other personalized offers such as a discount on the week of a shopper’s birthday.
 

~ TECHNOLOGY DEALS, MERGERS AND SKIRMISHES ~
 

Digital Broadcasting Group (DBG) has acquired Digital Sports Ventures, a multimedia content platform that delivers college sports videos and apps to websites and mobile devices. This deal follows DBG’s introduction of its Content Library Platform that opens up the company’s content library and suite of management and technology tools to its publisher partners.
 
Kontiki, the company behind BBC’s iPlayer service, has secured a deal that will allow customers of World Television, a video communications agency, to use its enterprise video platform. Kontiki’s content delivery service provides a low-cost, efficient way to send video to a user’s desktop, provide easy access to libraries of pre-recorded material and even offer private YouTube-style streaming services. Furthermore, since Kontiki’s infrastructure is cloud-based, its customers’ employees can access live streams and on demand video from any location or device.
 
Triveni Digital has announced an agreement that will allow users of the MediaStar Suite of program management tools from Broadcast Interactive Media (BIM) to use Triveni’s Digital GuideBuilder metadata platform to support both ATSC fixed and mobile DTV transmissions. BIM’s TitanTV guides appear on almost 1,000 TV station websites. Via this deal, Triveni and BIM will provide broadcasters a more cost-efficient way to input the same data through a single, integrated platform.
 

~ TRENDS, RESEARCH, ETC. ~
 

Social media marketing agency Attention spent the time between September 10 and October 10 tracking data and mentions in relation to the Occupy Wall Street (and the world) movement. The agency found that 82.5% of mentions and information relating to the protests came from Twitter. Personal blogs came in second at 12.5%, while Facebook and YouTube lagged far behind at 2.8% and 0.5%, respectively.
 
BBC.com
recently conducted research with Starcom MediaVest, which found that tablet owners have stronger relationships with news providers. For example, 78% of tablet owners say they read more news stories and follow a greater variety of topics, with the same percentage of people noting that tablets improve the “news experience” overall. In terms of trust, 63% of tablet owners also say that they rely on traditional news organizations more than news aggregating engines.
 
The 2011 Beta Research Digital Cable Subscriber study, which ranked digital basic networks across various metrics including viewer satisfaction, mentions and average perceived value among viewers, has been released. The Cooking Channel and ID, Investigation Discovery led the way in terms of viewer satisfaction as both networks netted 58% of viewers satisfied. The Lifetime Movie Network received the most mentions as favorite digital network at 19%, and the NFL Network held the highest average perceived value at $1.66 per viewer.
 

~ GADGETS & APPS ~

 
Zynga‘s “Mafia Wars 2,” which was slated to launch within the next couple of weeks, was actually released this week. The sequel offers numerous enhancements over its predecessor, including the option to choose from over 300 different types of weapons and cars. Furthermore, the game can support 16 different languages, just in case you’re already planning a hit on someone in Thailand.
 
Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment
, in conjunction with Arkadium, has developed a social gaming companion to its popular TV series, The Vampire Diaries, titled “The Vampire Diaries: Get Sucked In.” In the game, players explore the town of Mystic Falls, the central setting of the show, and go on missions via an interactive map to solve mysteries and learn more about the town. The game is available on Facebook for free with the option of purchasing more content, prizes and playable locations through Facebook credits.
 
For the ladies, Rethink Breast Cancer has unveiled “ Your Man Reminder,” a free app for the iPhone that uses good looking guys to regularly remind you to “get in touch with and know your breasts.” It is the latest offering from the Canadian charity that seeks to use humor and sensitivity to raise breast health awareness. Check out some fun videos from the campaign on its YouTube channel.
 
Trover has extended its mobile app offering to the Android operating system. The free app lets travelers take photos of cool things and places they find and then share them with friends. The photos are then geo-tagged and overlaid on to a map.

Barb Palser is returning to Internet Broadcasting as its new Vice President of Account Management. Palser will help IB clients with their digital audience and revenue growth strategies, while also being responsible for general client relations.

Video ad management platform provider VINDICO has made some additions to its sales management team. Jes Santoro will be VINDICO’s new Senior Vice President of Sales; Brooke Horlick and Nicole Early join the company as the Directors of Agency Sales for the East/Midwest regions and the Western region, respectively; while Cole Fischer will be the Senior Account Executive for the Midwest region.
