Cynopsis: Kids!


Good morning. It’s Wednesday, October 10, 2007, and this is your first early morning briefing, coming to you from from the pavilions, hotels, restaurants, benches, stairs, beaches, hallways and any other spare corner at MIPCOM, Cannes, France.


Kids 6-11 are going to get a new TV programming block.  Taffy Entertainment completes a deal with the Spain-based broadcaster VEO to create Taffy Kids, a new 2-hour branded kids block.  Slated to air Saturdays and Sundays from 3-5p one each night, programming will include Taffy properties including the animated series Funky Cops and Wheel Squad.

Shaftesbury signs a deal with Disney Channel Japan for the first season of Shaftesbury’s live-action comedy Life with Derek (26×30).  Among the talent making their way around Cannes this week are the two of the stars of Life with Derek, Michael Seater and Ashley Leggat, who play step siblings Derek and Casey.  Currently in production on season three, Life with Derek was created by Daphne Ballon, commissioned by Canada’s The Family Channel, and is produced by Shaftesbury Films and distributed internationally by Shaftesbury Sales Company.

Making its first appearance at MIPCOM this week is Studio 100 Media NV & Co., a newly formed rights management company, which has announced it has entered into an exclusive Latin American distribution pact with Comarex.  According to the deal, Comarex has the rights to Studio 100 Media’s programming library, including TV, format, theatrical, home video, merchandising and publishing exclusively for Latin America, as well as the non-exclusive rights to Spanish-language programming for distribution in the US.  Titles from Studio 100 Media’s catalogue include Bumba The Clown, The House of Anubis, spring and Mega Mindy, with new projects to be included as well.  A unit of family-targeted entertainment content provider Studio 100 (Belgium), Studio 100 Media NV & Co. KG will also acquire and develop new content, take part in co-production and co-financing efforts as well as handling international distribution for Studio 100 and third party properties.

Animation Collective completes broadcast and home video rights deals for its animated property, Ellen’s Acres, here at MIPCOM.  Picking up the series is Cartoon Network Latin America, Australian Broadcasting Corporation (broadcast and video/DVD), Al Jazeera and TV Ontario.  Ellen’s Acres currently airs on Cartoon Network UK.

This is Emily Yeung (60×6), the preschool-targeted short-form live-action series, has been acquired by the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC).  The ABC previously picked up the series This is Daniel Cook, which it continues to run.  Co-produced by marblemedia and Sinking Ship Entertainment, the series is sold and distributed by marblemedia Distribution, a division of marblemedia.

Canal+, the French pay-TV broadcaster, picks up season three of Xilam’s animated series Oggy and the Cockroaches (65×30 or 200×7), which it will premiere later this month on the new Canal+ Family channel, per C21 Media.  Xilam is also showcasing its new animated property, A Kind of Magic, which is slated to premiere on France 3 in fall 2008.

HIT Entertainment has completed new deals to represent series from two animation studios:

  • Animated Adventures & Pictures (AAP) has named HIT to represent its K6-11 targeted animated property The Likeaballs (26×10).  Under the deal HIT will manage the UK home entertainment rights and worldwide TV distribution rights for the property.  The Likeaballs premiered last year on the BBC’s CBBC, and continued on to run on BBC1, BBC2 and again on CBBC.
  • In a new pact with Spargo Productions, a UK-based animation production company, HIT will distribute its kid’s shows Willo the Wisp, Little Monsters and Microscopic Milton.

Disney-ABC International has licensed a raft of shows to Spain’s free TV channel Antena 3; including Disney Channel’s live action series The Suite Life of Zack & Cody and Cory in the House.

In other Antena 3 news, the broadcaster will add the series Play With Me Sesame to its free digital channel and website, as well as continuing to air on the free TV channel.  Produced by Sesame Workshop and Noggin, Play With Me Sesame will re-launch on Saturdays and Sundays at 7:30a during the terrestrial channel’s Megatrix block, and will air daily at 9a on Antena 3’s free digital terrestrial channel Neox.

Canal+, the French pay-TV broadcaster, picks up season three of Xilam’s animated series Oggy and the Cockroaches (65×30 or 200×7), which it will premiere later this month on the new Canal+ Family channel.  Xilam is also showcasing its new animated property, A Kind of Magic, which is slated to premiere on France 3 in fall 2008.


Spider-Man Merchandising L.P. has inked deals with licensing partners for its new animated series The Spectacular Spider-Man, which is set to bow in early 2008 as part of the Kids’ WB Saturday morning line-up on The CW.  The first licensing partners for The Spectacular Spider-Man merchandising program include:  Hasbro (master toy licensee), Wear Me Apparel (master apparel), IMT (sporting goods), Fashion Accessory Bazaar (back-to-school, storage), Bendon Publishing (publishing), DecoPac (cake decoration), Giant Merchandising (t-shirts), Berkshire Fashion (headwear, cold weather and hosiery), Fast Forward (back-to-school), and Jay Franco (domestics).  Spider-Man Merchandising is a limited partnership between Sony Pictures Consumer Products Inc. and Marvel Entertainment, Inc.

4Kids Entertainment, Microsoft Game Studios, and Rare, Ltd., launch a worldwide promotional effort with Burger King Corp for their Viva Pinata property.  Viva Pinata premium character toys are available at Burger King with the purchase of a BK Kids Meal, now through November 4, 2007.  Based on the Viva Pinata animated series, which airs Saturday mornings on the 4Kids TV programming block on Fox, and the Xbox 360 video game, the premium characters featured in the promotion include: Hudson Horstachio (fortune spinner or lenticular card), Franklin Fizzlybear (3D puzzle or flip book), Fergy Fudgehog (sticker dispenser or kaleidoscope), Mongo Macaraccoon Sour (party knocker or block puzzler), Ella Elephanilla (flying disc or kazoo), Spalding Sparrowmint (foot sack or party light), Gordon Goobaa (viewer or launcher) and Cecil Cocoadile (maze craze or yo-yo).


Imagi Animation Studios has named Ken Tsumura as EVP/Production.  Tsumnura will oversee all production and studio operations at Imagi’s headquarters in Chai Wan, Hong Kong.  He will report to Kao and Douglas Glen, Co-CEO.  Tsumura most recently was SVP/Production & Technology, Mainframe Entertainment, where he served as executive producer on both Curious George and Adam Sandler’s Eight Crazy Nights, and was a producer on Father of the Pride.  A 22+ year industry veteran, Tsumura has toiled for DreamWorks Animation, Disney Animation, Universal Pictures, Columbia Pictures, Gracie Films and Electronic Arts.  Imagi’s upcoming products include the release of Gatchaman in early 2008, and Astro Boy for later that year, both of which will be distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures and the Weinstein Company.

Terri Thompson is upped to SVP/Executive Search, Carlsen Resources, Inc.  Thompson joined Carlsen last year as a consultant, focusing on the areas of digital media and marketing.  Thompson worked for Cox Communications for much of her career, serving as VP/Marketing among others.  She is also an active member of Women in Cable Telecommunications, serving as its national President and leading its WICT Foundation.

Debrah Lederman has been named VP/Marketing, ZULA USA.  Most recently Lederman toiled for Warner Bros. Home Video where she managed product development and marketing for properties including Tom and Jerry and Looney Tunes.  Prior to that she was with Buena Vista Home Entertainment’s brand marketing department.


The premiere of Nickelodeon’s new 1-hour special, The Naked Brothers Band: Battle of the Bands, on Saturday, October 6, at 8p, took the top spot for the week of October 1, 2007 across the key demos, with 2.4 million K2-11, 2.0 million K6-11, and 1.6 million Tweens 9-14 tuning in and showing increases over the time period last year by +42%, +71% and +50% respectively.  3.8 million total viewers P2+ watched the debut of Battle of the Bands, an increase of +37% versus a year ago.
