Regis Philbin will soon depart his post as host of Live! With Regis & Kelly though his co-host, Kelly Ripa just signed a new five-year deal with Disney-ABC Domestic Television to remain in place at Live!.  Ripa’s new deal through 2017 begins next fall and sets her up to become a 16-year co-host of the morning talk show.  Philbin’s replacement has not been announced though a search has been underway for months.  Guests appearing during Philbin’s final week beginning November 14 on Live! include David Letterman, Donald Trump, Jimmy Fallon and his former co-host Kathie Lee Gifford.

Medical expert Dr. Sanjay Gupta will anchor a new weekly program on CNN called The Next List airing on Sundays at 2p starting November 13.  The half-hour program will profile people who are leaders in the areas of innovation, trends and forging new avenues within various industries around the world.  Prior to each Sunday, vignettes from The Next List will air on CNN/US.  Dr. Gupta serves as chief medical correspondent at CNN and is a practicing neurosurgeon.

Offering an up-close, candid view of what happens to drivers under the influence of alcohol TLC premieres the new docu-series D.U.I. on December 1 at 9p.  TLC ordered 12 episodes with six airing in December and the other six slated to air in 2012.  The initial six episodes were shot in various counties in Oklahoma and the action begins as the police pull over dangerous drivers and follows them through the sobriety tests, the interrogation, searches, lockup and the bail posting process.  Each case is presented in full from arrest to sentencing in an effort to show viewers the harsh reality of drunk-driving.  D.U.I. is produced by Mike Mathis Productions, Inc. for TLC.

Sunday’s season premiere of The Real Housewives of Atlanta delivered 2.9 million total viewers and 1.9 million among A18-49 for Bravo.  These figures represent a +20% and +10% increase respectively compared to the previous season’s debut.

  • Restaurant Makeover was picked up by National Geographic Italy (seasons V and VI, 26 eps/60 min), TVS Poland (season II, 13 eps/60 min) and Vitaya Belgium (seasons I-VII, 13 eps/30 min and 78 eps/60 min).

~ PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT ~

The CW picked up a comedy from CBS TV Studios titled Danny Hollywood based on a hit Israeli musical drama of the same name.  The CW is moving forward with a script order with Mark Harmon, Eric and Kim Tannenbaum and Martha Haight on board as executive producers and Bert V Royal as writer.  Danny Hollywood is distributed globally by Armoza Formats.  In Israel, Danny Hollywood is a half-hour daily drama series about a young documentary filmmaker who seeks to solve the ongoing mystery surrounding the death of the country’s best-loved rock music legend, Danny Hollywood.  The filmmaker is transported to the year 1968 where she falls in love with Danny and works to prevent his death all the while dealing with life in a time without cell phones or the internet.

Best known for her roles in 90210 and What I Like About You, Jennie Garth was cast as the lead in ABC Family’s comedy pilot Village People.  Garth will play Alexa, a single, high-powered career woman who adopts a baby from a teen mother who also needs her love and care as well.  Garth will additionally serve as executive producer on the project.

Mimi Rogers will appear in multiple episodes of CBS’ comedy Two and a Half Men playing the mother of Walden Schmidt (Ashton Kutcher).

Saturday A18-49 Analysis:  CBS delivered a huge win Saturday over its network rivals at 7.2/21 among A18-49, according to final national ratings from Nielsen.  CBS’ Home Depot Prime College Football match between LSU and Alabama clobbered the competition starting at 8p with a 6.0/19 while FOX’s double Cops episodes averaged a distant #2 at 1.3/4.  At 9p, CBS held its giant lead with the Prime College Football game at 6.9/21 and ABC’s Saturday Night Football game and Univision’s Sabado Gigante tied for second place at 0.9/3 each.  CBS’ Home Depot Prime College Football game scored its highest rating/share at 10p with a 7.5/22 and another tie for #2 occurred, this time between ABC’s Saturday Night Football and NBC’s Law & Order: SVU repeat at 0.9/3 apiece.

Sunday A18-49 Analysis:  NBC notched another Sunday win leading the A18-49 demo at 7.7/19, according to final national ratings from Nielsen.  FOX took the 7p hour in a mighty way with The OT at 6.1/16 and NBC’s Football Night in America Part 2 was next at 2.0/5 followed by CBS’ 60 Minutes at 1.9/5.  NBC took over at 8p with Football Night in America Part 3 and the start of Sunday Night Football at an average of 6.8/16 followed by ABC’s Once Upon a Time at 3.8/9.  NBC’s Sunday Night Football gained during 9p and posted an 8.9/20 while FOX’s animated comedies Family Guy and American Dad averaged a 2.8/7 at #2 and ABC’s Desperate Housewives was a close #3 at 2.8/6.  NBC ended the night by scoring an 8.7/21 with the final hour of Sunday Night Football and CBS’ CSI: Miami was second place at 1.9/5 and in third was ABC’s Pan Am posting a 1.7/4.

Monday A18-49 Analysis:  CBS led Monday night with a 4.1/10 A18-49, according to final national ratings from Nielsen.  CBS opened the night a winner at 8p with How I Met Your Mother and 2 Broke Girls with an average of 4.5/12 and ABC’s Dancing with the Stars waltzed into second place at 3.3/8 and FOX’s Terra Nova was third at 2.6/7.  CBS’ comedies Two and a Half Men and Mike & Molly ruled over the competition through 9p at an average of 4.9/11 and ABC’s Dancing with the Stars held steady at #2 with a 3.5/8 and FOX’s House was #3 at 2.8/6.  CBS polished off the final win of the night during 10p as Hawaii Five-O posted a 3.1/8 and ABC continued in second place with Castle at 2.4/6 and NBC’s newsmagazine program Rock Center with Brian Williams was third at 1.0/3.

~ EXECUTIVE MOVES ~

Diane Villegas began a new position at REELZCHANNEL as Director/Affiliate Marketing.  The former Comcast Cable executive will be in charge of expanding the network’s distribution levels via affiliate marketing goals which Diane will create, execute and maintain.

New York-based Sound Lounge hired Jill Silberstein as Executive Producer, effective immediately.  In her new position, Jill replaces Gloria Pitagorsky who departed the company in October to pursue independent projects.  Jill will head daily client communications and oversee budgets for the television commercial unit.  Jill will also co-lead the company’s Hispanic division with Juan Aceves and Vicky Ferraro.  Jill reports to Marshall Grupp, Tom Jucarone and Peter Holcomb, all Partners at Sound Lounge.

Effective immediately, Scott Malaga was tapped as SVP/Strategic Partnerships at Intersport where he will supervise sales activities for the Sponsorship and Event Marketing unit. 

Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia, Inc. named Joe Lagani to the newly-created role as Chief Revenue Officer.  Joe will spearhead all advertising sales efforts in addition to cross-platform integrations and strategic brand relationships for its various media business assets including the magazines Martha Stewart Living, Martha Stewart Weddings, Whole Living and Everyday Food along with its website and iPad and iPhone apps as well as television and radio platforms.

Sony Pictures Television (SPT) handed promotions to two longtime sales executives, Flory Bramnick and Philip Martzolf.  Flory was elevated to EVP/US Cable Sales and now manages all US cable sales operations for SPT.  Flory will also supervise the US cable sales teams in both the New York and Los Angeles offices. Philip advances to EVP/US Syndication Sales and now heads all first-run and off-net syndicated programming sales in addition to current feature film sales and titles from SPT’s extensive library.  Philip will also manage the US syndication teams based in four regional offices in Los Angeles, New York, Chicago and Atlanta.  Congratulations, Flory and Philip on your EVPships!

Univision Communications added two to cover its political advertising efforts: Joe DelGrosso as EVP/Managing Director, Political & Advocacy Group and Matt Boxer as SVP/Political & Advocacy Group.  Joe will lead Univision’s political task force with the goal to position Univision as a leader in this arena while Matt will manage the political sales development effort, reporting to Joe DelGrosso.  Joe and Matt will be based in New York though also have offices in Washington, D.C.

Michael Waldron joins TV Land as VP/Creative Director, Design and Animation.  Based in New York, Michael will report to Kim Rosenblum, EVP/Marketing and Creative.  Most recently, Michael was with the creative company Nailgun* which he co-founded.

AKQA Media, the media, search and analytics unit of AKQA announced the company is hiring 15 new staffers for its practice in the next three months.  The company has been bolstered in revenue growth by more than 50 percent over the previous year by servicing such clients as Audi, Clorox and Turner Broadcasting.  New hires at AKQA Media in the areas of search, analytics and media buying and planning include: Shabnum Mehra as Group Media Director concentrating on social media in the US market; Allen Stern as Group Media Director to assist with leading The Clorox Company account; and Michael Mathog as Director/Analytics to head a team focused on solving online analytics problems.
