Good morning. It’s Wednesday, November 6, 2013, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.
ESPN formalized its commentator assignments for the 2013-14 men’s college basketball season, where more than 1,500 games across ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNU, ESPNEWS and ESPN3 are set to run. Non-conference coverage gets underway with more than 375 contests starting Friday, Nov. 8, with a full slate of games including the Armed Forces Classic at 7:30p on ESPN. Among the notable assignments this season are:
- Although Bill Raftery‘s is off to FOX Sports 1, Sean McDonough and Jay Bilas will return to call ACC games on Big Monday and will now by joined by reporter Jeannine Edwards. Meanwhile, Brent Musburger, Fran Fraschilla and Holly Rowe return to work the second half of the Big Monday doubleheader featuring Big 12 programs.
- Mike Patrick and Len Elmore will cover The American Conference.
- Beth Mowins and Kara Lawson will team up for microphone duties for West Coast Conference games on ESPN2
- Shannon Spake will join Dick Vitale and Dan Shulman for ESPN’s Saturday Primetime Presented by DIRECTV game that host’s that day’s College GameDay Driven by State Farm.
- For the 10th year, Rece Davis will serve as host for College GameDay. He will be joined by Bilas, Digger Phelps and Jalen Rose to preview all the day’s action and discuss the biggest storylines in college basketball.
ESPN’s coverage of Monday Night Football that saw a Bears upset over the Packers, delivered a 10.1 rating for an average of 16.1 million viewers, according to Nielsen. That ties the Eagles/Redskins game as the highest-rated MNF telecast of the 2013 season for MNF. On the local front, the game drew a 20.3 rating on ESPN in Chicago and a 13.7 on WCIU-IND, for a combined 34.0 rating in the market. In Milwaukee, the game garnered a 13.9 rating on ESPN and a 36.4 on WISN-ABC, for a combined 50.3 rating in the market. Through nine weeks and 10 games, ESPN’s MNF is averaging an 8.5 US rating, 9,787,000 households and 13,362,000 viewers in 2013, slight increases in all categories over the same period in 2012.
With more Nielsen numbers in the books, ABC officially carried the two most-viewed college football games of the week on Saturday. Florida State’s win over Miami averaged 8,354,000 viewers and a 5.1 rating. The channel’s coverage of Michigan State besting Michigan ranked as the second most-viewed game of the week with an average of 5,169,000 viewers and a 3.3 rating. The ABC Saturday Night Football series is posting double-digit audience growth over last year at the same point, averaging 6,356,000 viewers and a 3.8 rating for increases of 18% and 15%.
Get ready for another sports channel, although this will offer its own take on the business. Fantasy Sports Zone TV (FSZ TV) announced its arrival yesterday with the goal of ensnaring the more than 35 million Americans that play fantasy sports and a launch in 2014. The new network is led by cable television industry veteran Steve Friedman and investor Jeff Sagansky. The channel will come out of the game with over 3,000 hours of original programming devoted to professional and college fantasy sports, including baseball, football, basketball, NASCAR, hockey and golf. According to the channel, the network’s daily live programming will feature “prominent bloggers and fantasy sports experts to provide in-depth statistical analysis of fantasy sports and fantasy games.”
China is making another go at the Olympics, with the AP reporting that Beijing and the northern Chinese city of Zhangjiakou are bidding for the 2022 Winter Olympics. The report states that the Chinese Olympic Committee sent a formal nomination letter to the IOC on Sunday. Nov. 14 is the deadline for submission of bids to the IOC.
NBC Sports Group announced that its coverage of the MLS Cup will continue tomorrow with the second leg of the Western Conference Semifinals between the Portland Timbers and Seattle Sounders at 11p on NBCSN. Arlo White will call the game and will be joined by former U.S. Men’s National Team midfielder and analyst Kyle Martino and host Russ Thaler.
The rematch of two of Bellator MMA’s Michael Chandler and Eddie Alvarez delivered record ratings for Spike TV with the telecast drawing 1.1 million viewers. That marks the most-watched in Bellator event history and the most watched mixed martial arts show on television this fall.
MSG Network announced that its original series Four Courses with JB Smoove presented by VISA, starring comedian and actor JB Smoove, will return to the network for a sophomore season with ten all-new episodes starting in January.

NASCAR laid out its schedule for its return to Las Vegas for the postseason NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Champion’s Week. This year’s awards will take place Dec. 6 at Wynn Las Vegas with FOX Sports 2 and NASCAR.com providing coverage from 9p to midnight. Events are set to include the NASCAR National Motorsports Press Association (NMPA) Myers Brothers Awards Luncheon, NASCAR Victory Lap down the world-famous Las Vegas Strip; and NASCAR After The Lap sponsored by Ford and Coca-Cola. Festivities begin Tuesday, Dec. 3 with NASCAR Live where Eli Gold will sit down for an hour with the 2013 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series champion to discuss the 2013 season.
Actor Gary Sinise signed as spokesman for Sportsman Channel’s Salute to Service program. The initiative will serve as a multimedia effort to celebrate American servicemen and women, and raise awareness of issues and opportunities facing veterans. The program include everything from series programming and documentaries to social media and editorial.
Samsung stepped up as the brains behind the alien-like symbols and cryptic messages displaying the message – #WinnerTakesEarth that have appeared on landmarks and games across Brazil, the US, England, Germany and Italy. The brand is using the soccer-themed campaign for the unveiling of the Galaxy 11 that will follow the journey of 11 of the world’s best players as they come together and attempt to save Earth from alien domination. The first player recruited to join GALAXY 11 as team captain will be announced on November 11 across Samsung Mobile social channels and a campaign microsite. Franz Beckenbauer will serve as the coach of the team and other international superstars will be named to GALAXY 11 in the coming weeks.
Farmers Insurance inked a five-year extension to remain the title sponsor of the PGA Tour’s annual event in San Diego through 2019. The deal kicks in following the 2014 Farmers Insurance Open that takes place on Jan. 23-26.

The NHL is extending its ties to Ticketmaster, locking in a multiyear ticketing agreement and announcing that this season will see select NHL games will offer Ticketmaster’s new TM+ beta feature, enabling fans to see unsold tickets from the teams alongside tickets being resold by fans. These events will feature “interactive, color-coded seat maps that display all available tickets for upcoming games.” The NHL selected Ticketmaster as the exclusive ticketing provider for all League events including the 2014 Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic, 2014 Coors Light NHL Stadium Series, 2014 Tim Hortons NHL Heritage Classic, 2015 NHL All-Star Game, and NHL Awards.
SocialGuide reports that the NBA on TNT ranked as the most discussed program of the week with 3.11 million tweets and over 808,000 unique authors. The most retweeted tweet of the week ran during an NBA on TNT game (President Obama welcoming back D-Rose) with 26,199 retweets.
