A CYNOPSIS MESSAGE FROM WARNER BROS. DOMESTIC CABLE DISTRIBUTION
GEORGE LOPEZ: A HIT ON WEDNESDAY NIGHTS WINS TIME PERIOD FOR FOUR STRAIGHT WEEKS GEORGE LOPEZ CYNTHIA TURNER’S
Good morning. It’s Wednesday, November 2, 2005, and this is your first early morning briefing. NBC has ordered six more episodes of its Friday night series Three Wishes, which thus far this season has averaged a 2.2/7 among adults 18-49. And if that’s not enough, NBC has also ordered up three more episodes of The Office which airs on Tuesday nights after My Name is Earl. Apple is in the process of talking with sports franchises about providing content for its video iPod services via iTunes, according to a report in SportsBusiness Journal. The NHL has reportedly reached out to Apple to begin discussions, and Major League Baseball says they expect to be approached at any time and assumes all the other major sports franchises are being approached as well. Such a deal would not be unheard of in the sports world. The National Football League had an audio feed available on iTunes last year of the Super Bowl and the AFC and NFC championship games, and says its looking at video iPod, but has not come to any decisions as yet. On the same topic of the video iPod, London’s Independent reports the BBC plans to offer most of its programming to such a service as the video iPod, just seven days after the original broadcast airing. Here’s the thing – the BBC plans to offer its programming at no charge. The network says that its viewers have already paid the license fee for its programming, and charging them again would be unfair. Tonight’s Premieres: * MORE GOOD STUFF *Twentieth Television has two first run court strip series in development for the 2006-07 season. The first one features Telemundo’s Christina Perez, in a strip being developed by Peter Brennan (Judge Judy and Judge Joe Brown). The second show is with Lynn Toler, a former Cleveland Heights Municipal Court Judge and litigation attorney specializing in various civil matters. According to a couple of reports including Bloomberg and Multichannel News, Viacom owned CBS may be kicking the tires of College Sports Television. If the deal goes thru, CSTV would appear under the CBS Sports banner, and on the side of the Viacom company overseen by Leslie Moonves after the split at the end of the year. Price of the deal has been pegged in the $500 million range. CSTV launched in April 2003, and currently owns the network along with several companion web sites. As for its connection with CBS, the network has produced a special that aired on Viacom’s Spike TV, and has also picked up from CBS the internet streaming rights to March Madness which CSTV makes available to broadband subscribers for a fee of $19.95. FX has decided not to order a second season of Steven Bochco’s drama series Over There. Though it was generally received by good reviews, the gritty wartime drama set in Iraq delivered soft ratings, averaging 2.1 million viewers across its 13 episodes, with just 1.4 million tuning in for the season finale. DirecTV will launch its first original show in January, a weekly series called CD USA, produced by Blaze Television. The show will include live performances from established artists such as David Gray, Goo Goo Dolls and Ben Harper, as well as emerging artists. CD USA is a sister series to the British show CD UK, also produced by Blaze. * NEW ORDERS / CASTING / DEVELOPMENT / PRODUCTION *Paramount Network Television has signed Will Gluck to a two year, seven figure development deal to create 30m comedy projects for the studio. His deal begins in June. Gluck is the co-creator and exec producer of the comedy The Loop which will launch on Fox in midseason. Pam Brady, a co-exec prod on The Loop, has signed a deal with 20th Century Fox TV which will initially keep her in the loop with The Loop, as well as develop new comedies for the studio. The deal is for two years, with an option for a third, says Variety. Casting Call: SOAPnet’s one hour reality show I Wanna Be A Soap Star from LMNO Productions, will be holding an open casting call to find 10 contestants for the third installment of the series. The winner of the series will receive a 13-week contract role on ABC’s “One Life to Live.” Casting is set for November 5 in Los Angeles from 9a-3p at ABC Prospect Studios, 4151 Prospect Avenue, Stage 5. Parking thru the Prospect East gate. Contestants are encouraged to fill out an application before arriving by going to www.iwannabeasoapstar.com . Good luck! * EXECUTIVE MOVES *Michael J. Wolf has been named President/COO, MTV Networks, reporting directly to Judy McGrath, Chairman/CEO. In this newly created position, Wolf will lead the MTVN’s business and technology operations, including Ad Sales, Affiliate Sales and Marketing, Business and Strategy Development, Business and Legal Affairs, Finance, Information Systems and Technology, and Production Operations. Amity Entertainment has named Bob Peyton to EVP/Distribution, effective immediately. He will play a key role in making Amity an industry leader in the distribution of the company’s product, both in the U.S. and internationally. Robert Mendez has been appointed to the newly created position of SVP/Diversity, Disney-ABC Television Group, effective immediately. Based in Burbank, he will report to Anne Sweeney, Co-Chair/Disney Media Networks and President/Disney-ABC Television Group. Robert will be responsible for advancing diversity strategies for the various properties within Disney-ABC Television Group. He will also serve as the Disney-ABC Television Group’s key liaison on diversity matters with government officials, the creative community, advocacy groups and others. A handful of exec moves at Nancy Glass Productions: Cindy Connors has been named the new Executive Producer of Broadband content; Gloria Esposito to Executive in Charge of XM satellite radio programming; Maureen Tate joins the company as Senior Producer of Kitchen Trends; Carol Yancho is the new Senior Producer in the Specials Unit; and two new editors have joined the Mission Organization staff, Art Citron and Kelly Hurd. Michael Piller, best known to television viewers around the world as the executive producer/co-creator of more than 500 hours of Star Trek, lost his long battle with cancer on Tuesday, November 1, 2005 at his home in Los Angeles. He was 57. He is survived by his wife Sandra, daughter Brent and son Shawn. Michael served as creative consultant for Star Trek: Voyager, which he co-created, until the series concluded in May 2001. He also co-created Star Trek: Deep Space Nine and served as executive producer on Star Trek: The Next Generation, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine and Star Trek: Voyager. During the 1994-95 television season, Michael also co-created and executive produced the UPN network series Legend. In 1998, he wrote and co-produced Star Trek: Insurrection, the ninth installment in the enormously successful Star Trek feature film franchise for Paramount Pictures. In 1999, Michael partnered with his son Shawn Piller to form Piller2, Inc., a Hollywood-based production company where they developed and produced new television and motion picture properties. The father/son duo are also the co-creators of USA Network’s top-rated cable drama series The Dead Zone, and the ABC Family Channel’s Wildfire. Michael, in addition to serving on the Advisory Board for the Department of Communications Studies at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, gave a major grant to his alma mater to help launch a nationally distinctive screenwriting program. * RATINGS *Top Ten Basic Cable Ad Supported Network Rankings among Total Viewers for the month of October 2005: Top Ten Basic Cable Ad Supported Network Rankings among A18-49 for the month of October 2005: Top 10 Cable Programs among A18-49 (000) for the week of 10/24-30, 2005 Top 10 Broadcast Programs among A18-49 (000) for the week of OCT 24-30, 2005: Monday — A18-49 Analysis: ABC led the pack on Monday, Halloween evening, with an overall 5.0/13 A18-49, according to final numbers from Nielsen Media Research.
