Cynopsis: Kids!

Good morning. It’s Wednesday, November 28, 2012, and this is your first early morning briefing.

Turner International Asia Pacific will launch Toonami (, its action-adventure animation/anime, multi-language channel, in Asia this Saturday, December 1, 2012. Initially available across Southeast Asia in Indonesia, Philippines, Vietnam, Thailand, Hong Kong, Singapore and Taiwan, Toonami channel will feature series such as Young Justice, Batman: The Brave and the Bold and Dragon Ball Z. Turner International Asia Pacific’s portfolio of channels includes Cartoon Network, POGO, Boomerang and Cartoonito, the latter a preschool channel is also debuting in Southeast Asia on December 1. Toonami will continually encourage fan involvement by submitting story ideas and taking part in various competitions. The Toonami channel will be supported by various apps, games and websites. At launch, Toonami viewers are being asked to submit their sci-fi ideas to be actively involved in the development of the channel’s origin story, which focuses on NAMI, a futuristic lifeform.

Uglydoll gets its own graphic novel series, which is set for publication in summer 2013. VIZ Media, a North American publisher/distributor/licensor of manga/graphic novels/anime, signs a publishing deal with Pretty Ugly, licensors for the Uglydoll plush toy brand, to develop the new series of original graphic novels. The Uglydoll series will be published under the VIZ Kids imprint.

Paws, Inc. and Bare Tree Media, a developer/publisher of branded interactive content, partner under a global license deal to release Garfield Snaps, a new virtual photo app featuring Garfield and his pals for iOS devices. Garfield Snaps allows fans of the lasagna-loving fat cat to embed the Garfield characters into their photos and to share them via email, Facebook and Twitter. Bare Tree Media is also working on an Android version of the Garfield Snaps app (which is pretty fun to say out loud – try it), which will debut soon.

Lawless Entertainment finalizes a license deal with LA-based apparel company Mighty Fine for the classic The Little Prince, the 1934 novella written by Antoine de Saint-Exupery. Under the new agreement, Might Fine will develop apparel for infants, toddlers and juniors (e.g. knit tops, tee shirts and fleece/French terry items) featuring art from The Little Prince. The new line of The Little Prince apparel items from Mighty Fine will debut in the US and Canada at various stores in January 2013.


Nickelodeon‘s live Dora the Explorer show, Dora the Explorer LIVE! Search for the City of Lost Toys, heads to Abu Dhabi where it debuts this December 14 and 15 at du Forum on Yas Island, Abu Dhabi. The life touring show is produced in partnership with Flash Entertainment and has already made its way across the UK, Australia, Europe, North America and South America. The animated Dora the Explorer series currently airs across the Middle East on a Nickelodeon branded block on MBC3.

American GreetingsStrawberry Shortcake will kick off her first live musical stage show, Strawberry Shortcake: Follow Your Berry Own Beat in North America on Sunday, January 13. Produced by Koba Entertainment, the Strawberry Shortcake: Follow Your Berry Own Beat ( live tour will make its away across 32 cities in the US and Canada. The opening act for the new stage show is Doodlebops. The Strawberry Shortcake live show was written, choreographed and directed by Koba’s Artistic Director, and theater veteran, Patti Caplette, and features two new songs co-written by Randy Bachman (of the awesome The Guess Who and Bachman-Turner Overdrive) with his daughter Lorelei Bachman.


The new animated preschool series Sofia the First will launch Friday, January 11 on Disney Channel at 9:30a and later that day on Disney Junior channel at 5:30p. The series revolves around Sofia, an adventurous, young girl who becomes a princess when her mom marries a king, and how she adjusts to her new life and her new school, Royal Prep Academy. Multi-platform support for the series debut includes a preview of the premiere episode available via Disney Channel SVOD, Watch Disney Junior and on iTunes from Friday, January 4. The January 11 linear TV premiere on Disney Channel will be simulcast on Watch Disney Channel and mobile providers AT&T and Sprint TV. Following the premiere, throughout January, new episodes will be available one week prior to their linear premiere via Disney Channel SVOD and Watch Disney Junior. In early January 2013, will launch the new game, Minimus the Great. A production of Disney Television Animation, the series stars the voices of Ariel Winter (Modern Family) as Sofia, Sara Ramirez, Wayne Brady, and Tim Gunn. Also from Modern Family, Eric Stonestreet guest stars in the premiere episode as the voice of Sofia’s flying horse, Minimus. Other first season guest stars include Viola Davis, Bonnie Hunt, Ellie Kemper, Megan Mullally, Kiernan Shipka and Jeffrey Tambor.

Viacom International Media Networks (VIMN) inks a raft of Nickelodeon programming block deals and packages in Latin America.

– In Brazil, Bandeirantes signs a programming block deal that includes the first seasons of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, T.U.F.F. Puppy and Supah Ninjas, as well as the first three seasons of Avatar: The Last Airbender, Big Time Rush, and True Jackson. Also in Brazil, Band TV picks up the first two seasons of the series Fanboy & Chum Chum and Big Time Rush, and the first four seasons of Drake & Josh and Kenan and Kel.
UCVTV (Chile) completes a deal for a new Nick Jr preschool programming block package featuring several animated series, including seasons 3 and 4 of Dora the Explorer, and the first two seasons of both Bubble Guppies and Team Umizoomi.
TV Hondurena (Honduras) finalizes year three of its Nickelodeon block deal, which includes Big Time Rush season 2, iCarly season 3, Victorious season 2, and Fanboy & Chum Chum season 1.
Teleamazonas (Ecuador) inks new deals on Nickelodeon Movies, live action and animation programming, as well as renewals across the portfolio.
Telenica (Nicaragua) finalizes year three of its programming block deal featuring new show pacts as well as series renewals from the portfolio  including Big Time Rush season 2, and the first seasons of Supah Ninjas and the new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles season 1.

In Spain, Clan TV, RTVE’s kid-targeted channel, will premiere the animated, non-verbal comedy series Suckers on Saturday, December 8 at 8:15p. Clan TV will air Suckers regularly on Saturdays and Sundays at 8:15p. Spain-based BRB Internactional distributes the TV series. Based on an idea from Genoma Animation, Suckers is developed and co-produced by Screen 21, which is a division of BRB, TVC and Genoma Animation.


Mind Candy appoints Jocelyn Stevenson as Executive Creative Producer. In her new positions, Stevenson will head up creative on all of Mind Candy’s movie and TV projects, which includes the first Moshi Monsters Movie, which is currently in pre-production, and Moshi TV, which lives within as a members feature. A 40-year veteran of the kid’s TV industry, Stevenson has toiled for Sesame Street, as a creator/writer/producer for the Jim Henson Company, and as Chief Creative Officer at Hit Entertainment, as well as Creative Director for ATT Animation.
