Weekend ratings…

A controversial Panthers win on Monday Night Football handed ESPN with a win for the evening courtesy of a 9.9 household rating, representing an average of 11,480,000 households and 15,772,000 viewers according to Nielsen. That score marks a 25% jump in ratings over the equitable game a year ago. In Boston, the game delivered a 12.0 rating on ESPN and a 24.1 on WCVB-WMUR-ABC, for a combined 36.1 rating in the market. In Charlotte, the game delivered a 17.5 rating on ESPN and a 20.3 on WSOC-ABC, for a combined 37.8 rating in the market.

With more Nielsen numbers in the books, NBC’s SNF broadcast averaged 26.9 million viewers to mark the best viewership in primetime for a November game in 17 years, as well as a 48% markup from the equivalent game a year ago. With nearly 27 million viewers, the game also ranks as the third most-watched program on TV since the Super Bowl.

ESPN and ABC carried the two most-viewed college football games in prime time on Saturday, to drive the two channels to finish first and second, respectively, on the night among viewers and all key male and people demographics (18-34, 18-49 and 25-54). ABC’s Saturday Night Football telecast that saw USC upset Stanford averaged 5,010,000 viewers, according to Nielsen, with a household score of 3.2. ESPN’s coverage of Alabama beating Mississippi State generated 4,493,000 viewers and a 2.7 rating.

HBO is marching rapidly toward its 188th PPV event on Saturday, with its first-ever international based pay-per-view event in HBO PPV history. The Manny Pacquaio/Brandon Rios rumble will be produced and presented on US time, with the fight taking place at 9p. Jim Lampley, Max Kellerman, Roy Jones Jr. and Harold Lederman will be ringside to call all the action.
Speaking of fights, MMA had a good weekend. Quinton “Rampage” Jackson’s Bellator debut delivered 1.1 million viewers to the main event. Overall, the two-hour fight card delivered 793,000 viewers.

Saturday night’s UFC 167 prelims on Fox Sports 1 delivered the network with 998,000 viewers, to mark a sharp uptick over the previous two telecasts which drew 628,000 and 722,000 viewers respectively.

FOX Sports 1 will carry the conclusion of The Ultimate Fighter: Team Rousey vs. Team Tate on Saturday, Nov. 30 at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas. For the first time ever, the Finale crowns both a man and a woman winner, live on FOX Sports 1. Both The Ultimate Fighter winners will land a six-figure contract with the UFCas well as a Harley-Davidson motorcycle. The Main Event will see the crowning of the TUF champs as well as TUF alums Gray Maynard and Nate Diaz meeting for the third time in a lightweight battle.

Sponsorship & Promotion

ESPN revealed plans for the seventh annual Jimmy V Week for Cancer Research, set to begin on Dec. 3. This year, the social initiative will expand to two weeks in an effort to broaden awareness of the cause. The campaign launches at 7p with a simulcast of former NC State coach Jim Valvano’s 1993 ESPYs speech across ESPN domestic media networks, as well as on the ABC SuperSign in Times Square with an introduction by cancer survivor, Good Morning America host Robin Roberts. To honor the 20th anniversary of the speech, Roberts and athletes, coaches, celebrities and ESPN personalities will recite Valvano’s words in PSAs. In addition, Jimmy V Week content, graphics and executions will appear in Monday Night Football, NBA on ESPN games and college football games on ABC throughout the initiative.

The NBA, WNBA, Africare and ExxonMobil announced the launch of “Power Forward,” a youth engagement initiative designed to use basketball to develop health, leadership and life skills in Nigeria. Nigerian native and Hall of Famer Hakeem Olajuwon, fellow countryman and former NBA player Obinna Ekezie and three-time WNBA champion Swin Cash tipped off the program with Nigerian government officials. The program is being introduced at 10 public and private high schools in Abuja and will engage 300 students, with equal representation of boys and girls and a curriculum that teaches leadership skills and builds health awareness through a combination of classroom and athletic activities.

Digital & Technology

Nate Silver’s staffed up its roster now that it’s part of the ESPN family. The site will re-launch in early 2014 with content focused around five verticals: Sports, Politics, Economics, Science, and Lifestyle. Mike Wilson, formerly of the Tampa Bay Times, will serve as Managing Editor with Kate Elazegui taking the reins as Creative Director. Other names include Carl Bialik as Senior Writer, News; Micah Cohen as Senior Editor; Harry Enten as Senior Writer, Politics; and Walter Hickey as Senior Writer, Science and Lifestyle.

FOX Sports announced that the company is working with Studio 408 (made up of graduate and undergrads from Savannah College of Art and Design) to create a concept for the opening animation for the Super Bowl.

Roster Moves

WWE named Matthew Singerman as Executive Vice President, Programming where he will be charged with the strategic development of content, including original, unscripted and scripted shows, scheduling of all programming and operations across all distribution platforms, including a potential WWE Network. Most recently, Singerman served as a consultant for channels that include NFL Network, Nuvo, Pivot and Back9 Network.
