Cynopsis: Kids!
11.20.13
Good morning. It’s Wednesday, November 20, 2013, and this is your first early morning briefing.
The NBCUniversal Cable Entertainment Group took full ownership of Sprout, the 24-hour preschool net, just last week and on Monday, announced it will shutter its children’s channel KidsCo, with minority partner Corus Entertainment, next year. “As one of many children’s linear services available in the international market, growing the KidsCo business has been challenging,” said a KidsCo statement. The move comes after NBCU bought out its remaining Sprout partners, PBS and HIT Television Ventures. “We see enormous potential in Sprout, and we are committed to our investment in the kids and family arena,” said Bonnie Hammer, chairman, NBCUniversal Cable Entertainment. Sprout, launched in 2005, currently reaches more than 60 million homes and has generated 1.5 billion on-demand views.
More success for Cartoon Network Studios. Cartoon Network is picking up 13 additional episodes each of its freshman series Uncle Grandpa and Steven Universe, bringing the total order to 26 episodes for both original animated half-hours. The two series originate from the network’s in-house shorts development program, which also produced Emmy-winning animated series Regular Show. Since its Sept. 2 premiere, Uncle Grandpa ranked No. 1 in its time period at 8p Monday nights among K2-11, K6-11 and K9-14. The series moved to Tuesday nights last week. Steven Universe airs as part of Cartoon’s Monday night comedy lineup at 8p.
Speaking of Cartoon, the net is knee-deep in a Ben 10 Omniverse three-episode event, “Duel of the Duplicates.” The first ep aired last Saturday (November 16) with parts two and three airing Saturday, November 23, and Saturday, November 30, at 9p. A complementary free online game is ready for action at the Cartoon web site.
Nickelodeon is picking up a second season of ratings winner Paw Patrol. In partnership with Spin Master Entertainment, the series’ curriculum focuses on citizenship, social skills and problem solving. Season two will introduce new characters, locations and updated Paw Patrol vehicles with new tools and gadgets. Nick is partnering with the ASPCA to deliver the organization’s message promoting the humane treatment of animals.
Hilary Duff will guest-star in Nick’s primetime special Dora’s Ice Skating Spectacular on Monday, November 25, at 7p. Duff will play the Ice Witch, who hides everyone’s ice skates in the Snowy Forest. Two-time Olympic figure skater Johnny Weir makes an appearance in a new promo spot for the special, playing Dora’s ice skating coach.
Awards season continues. Jennifer Lopez, Katy Perry and TLC are on tap to perform at the 2013 American Music Awards, Sunday, Nov. 24 at 8p on ABC. The Dick Clark Productions show, hosted by Pitbull, will also feature performers including Luke Bryan, Miley Cyrus, Florida Georgia Line, Lady Gaga, Ke$ha, Imagine Dragons, Kendrick Lamar, Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, One Direction and Justin Timberlake. The awards show is exec produced by Allen Shapiro and Michael Mahan, and produced by Larry Klein.
Disney Junior celebrates the season with holiday-themed episodes and some jolly guest stars. Jeffrey Tambor and Tony Hale (both of Arrested Development) guest-star as Santa and Tobias the elf on Doc McStuffins; Eric Stonestreet (Modern Family) reprises his role as Sofia’s flying horse Minimus on Sofia the First, and Rhys Darby (Flight of the Conchords) returns as Percy the penguin in Jake and the Never Land Pirates. All of the full-length holiday episodes will be available for verified users on WATCH Disney Junior the day after their linear channel premiere.
Hub Network’s series The Aquabats! Super Show! returns next month with a succession of three specials. First up, Saturday, Dec. 21 at 1p ET/ 10a PT, is the “Christmas with The Aquabats!” ep, followed by “Shark Fighter” and “Kitty Litter,” where the crew encounters a new villain who uses kitten cuteness to battle enemies.
PBS Kids will host the Wild Kratts’ “Aqua Kratts Week” Dec. 23-27. New and favorite episodes will take kids on a journey through the depths of the world’s oceans, meeting nautical animals along the way.
Seriously, does this guy ever sleep? Nickelodeon picked up 40 episodes of game show Go Viral (working title) from Ryan Seacrest Productions. The half-hour, studio-based game show features kid contestants as they compete in elimination challenges revolving around viral videos. Production is slated to start in early 2014 in LA, with the show premiering next summer. It’s RSP’s first series for Nick, with Ryan Seacrest and Adam Sher serving as executive producers.

Leveraging Social Media to Drive Tune-In and Ratings
One of the hottest topics in media today is the effect of social media on television ratings. Nielsen released research this summer that said the volume of tweets affects live TV ratings 29% of the time – and that number is only expected to rise.

Score another one for Netflix. That other man of steel, Mattel animated series Max Steel, landed on the streaming service Nov. 15. The first 12 episodes of season one are currently available to U.S. members, viewable first within the Netflix Just For Kids section.
Words of wisdom from our expert panelists at last week’s CynKids webinar, “Developing & Distributing Kids Content in the Digital Age”:
* “It’s easy to get swept up with the latest technology, but those are just tools. You need to understand your audience,” says Jesse McLean, creative director at Glow. “Kids’ universe is so controlled. They have a strong need to create their own worlds, and rules of their own liking.”
* Filmmaker Dane Boedigheimer on why he’s started premiering content on the Annoying Orange website a week before it appears on YouTube: “We have 3.5 million subscribers on the Annoying Orange channel, but we don’t want to be so beholden to YouTube. They could turn around and change something, you never know, so we’ve been experimenting with windowing content on the AO web site. It’s a strategy that’s working well for Smosh.”
* Susanna Pollack, Yummico head of strategy & partnerships, on the company’s cross-platform, strategy: “It’s not solely about a suite of apps, or apps with a TV show. This content can live across platforms. For [the company’s first app] Rainbow Power, it’s not all game play. There’s still an opportunity to develop the story and characters.”
* YouTube or SVOD? Toon Goggles managing director Stephen Hodge says, Both. “There’s no reason to chose just one. Our content is being watched by kids, so we have a curated platform where they have the ability to discover material on their own. We have a lot of companies approaching us with interest in getting exposure on mobile and SVOD.”
At DisneyJunior.com/Holiday, kids can send or receive a card from Disney Junior characters or create a custom card to print and send. The site also features holiday-themed activities and games, including Sofia’s Painting Pals, Doc’s Snowman Roll Up, Hook’s Merry Winter Treasure Hunt and Frost Magic.
GAMES & APPS
Dang! The PlayStation 4 flew off shelves last Friday, with more than 1 million units sold in the U.S. within 24 hours of its release. Yahoo Games reports that this is five times the PS3 sale in the first two weeks of its release. Sony’s product launch did hit a few bumps though, as hardware failure reports rolled in. It received a one-star rating on Amazon.com from consumer complaints in response.
Babar is going digital. Cupcake Digital, Nelvana Enterprises and the Clifford Ross Co. created the first-ever app featuring the octogenarian: the Babar and the Adventures of Badou enhanced storybook app. Babar’s show runs on Disney Junior in the U.S. and Treehouse in Canada.
Join me on Wednesday, Dec. 11 for the webinar “How To Drive Tune-In and Dollars With Apps + Games.” Speakers including Susan Miller, co-founder of Cupcake Digital, and Sharon Rechter, co-founder of BabyFirst, will share which types of apps are most effective for programmers and distributors, which have resulted in the highest revenue & ratings, what the earmarks are of the best games & related apps, and the campaigns & solutions that advertisers are looking for. Register here: webpage.
Here comes Peekaboo. Five years after the debut of the Peekaboo Barn app, Night & Day Studios and Sesame Workshop co-produced the new Peekaboo Sesame Street app for iPad, iPhone and iPod touch. The app features familiar characters Elmo, Cookie, Big Bird and friends, and includes games, activities and tips.
Zumba Kids is now available for Xbox 360 and Wii from Majesco Entertainment Co. The title includes 30 high-energy routines, games and diverse dance styles set to hits from artists including Justin Bieber and Willow Smith.
LICENSING
Joy Tashjian Marketing Group partnered with wall graphics company Walls 360 to create large-format characters and art based on Nicktoon animated series Rob Dyrdek’s Wild Grinders.
INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS
The Jim Henson Co.’s Dinosaur Train will begin airing on Disney Channel in Germany on Jan. 1, 2014, part of the premiere lineup as the network transitions from a pay TV service to an advertising-financed channel.
Barcelona-based Imira Entertainment launched five new apps based on its animated series Sandra, The Fairytale Detective, in partnership with RTVE‘s interactive division.
Italian public broadcaster RAI and OFLAZ Media Group’s kids channel in Turkey snapped up adventure series Matt Hatter. The third season of the Platinum Films title also will appear on Canal Panda, Portugal and Spain.
EXECUTIVE MOVES

Tele Images is promoting Ingrid Libercier from head of productions and funding to general counsel. Her new responsibilities include the financing of fiction and animation series and the negotiation of contracts with broadcasters. The company is also upping Cecile Sady from production manager to animation producer.
